61. Planet of the Apes (2001) 62. Dude, Where's My Car? (2000) 63. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1974)Did you know that there are episodes of Elvira's 80's show, Elvira's Movie Macabre, on YouTube? I was in the mood to watch something something completely different so I picked this episode at random. I'm not gonna pretend I'm an expert on either Elvira or 70's Italian horror movies, so I don't know if this is edited or what, but I'll do my best to roll with it. Elvira's wrap-arounds all seem to be present. In this, Count Frankenstein is doing some kind of experiments to revive a caveman when his daughter and her lesbian lover friend show up for a visit. Frankenstein immediately falls for the friend. Meanwhile a perverted dwarf who used to be in Frankenstein's employ teams up with a different caveman to get revenge on Frankenstein for firing him. This was a pretty boring movie. Not enough violence or gore to appeal to that crowd. While there is some nudity (which surprised me since I thought Elvira's show aired on broadcast television?), there's not enough to appeal to that crowd. It's not stupid enough or poorly produced enough to really qualify for "so bad it's good" status. It's just a rather bland and uninteresting Hammer Horror knock-off movie. Elvira's entertaining enough doing what she does best - telling bad jokes and showing off her cleavage.

#374 - Predators (Hulu)

Screw it, I had a really good time with this. The characters aren't really anything deep but there's a lot of fun action to be had and I'm a sucker for some of the actors. [***½]
#375 - The Wolf of Snow Hollow (Prime)
*1st Viewing
At first, I was like "why is this dude overacting so badly?" and then I realized this is designed to be something of a comedy and it all fell more into place. The mystery element was stronger than expected too. [***½]

123. Congo (1995) - Watched this on Showtime on Demand. In a lot of ways, I felt that I should have watched this after my Jurassic Park/World marathon, but you know what they say, better late than never. It had been years, perhaps decades since I last watched this movie. First time I watched it, I remember my dad had borrowed a recorded VHS tape from a coworker/friend of his when the coworker recorded it off of pay-per-view. This was back in 1995 or 1996, somewhere around there. I remember seeing some of it on the USA Network back in the early-2000s (maybe 2001 or 2002). So it's been a long time since I watched it.
I know that this movie rode on the success of Jurassic Park given that that film was released two years prior and had quite a theatrical run. Also, given the fact that Michael Crichton wrote Jurassic Park and Congo, so it seemed that a movie adaptation would have been perfect to ride on that success. I know that it wasn't well-received by critics, despite performing well back then. Maybe people were expecting another Jurassic Park? I don't know. Because really, any sort of resemblance to that film was saved for the final act, when most of the film was about the agendas that each of the main characters had in going on this expedition.
I know that the general consensus is mixed on this film. Yes, it was inevitable that back in 1995 that it would be compared to Jurassic Park, but really, I had fun with it. Some scenes were kind of weird in that I wondered why it was in the screenplay, or at least why were some scenes included in the final cut. One thing that I found weird was the dynamic between Dylan Walsh's character and the main gorilla. Yes, I know that the gorillas were all people in suits and also used animatronics, but still. Hell, Ernie Hudson and Tim Curry always deliver when they're on screen. I will admit that the scene with Delroy Lindo still makes me laugh when he lashes out at Tim Curry for eating sesame cake in front of him. I also noticed that each scene with Joe Don Baker was him just being angry, which was kind of funny in a way.
The climax was fun, especially with the use of that laser. I will note that the lava coming out after the volcano erupted looked pretty bad. Yes, it was 1994/1995 and CGI was still not exactly the best (even for that time, the lava still looked fake). Personally, I felt that this movie was fun, average, if above average. Not great, but not horrible. I still had fun with it like I did as a kid when I watched it.

62. Dude, Where's My Car? (2000) 63. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1974) 64. Jim Henson's Turkey Hollow (2015)So I found this on YouTube. It's a Lifetime movie Thanksgiving special. I don't know how much Jim Henson actually had to do with its production since it came out 25 years after he died. Basically a divorced Dad and his two kids drop in on his asshole Aunt who lives in the Pacific Northwest for Thanksgiving. While there they all get sucked into a hunt for a local Bigfoot-esque legend. It's an ok enough family special. It has a little too much of that "darn kids today spend too much time on their phones" energy for my tastes, but otherwise it's a decent watch. Honestly it's not all that different from what you'd expect from a cheap Gravity Falls live-action movie.

I had somehow seen the sequel and the 2019 version but never this one. It's the best of the bunch and includes a lot of del Toro trademarks. [***½]

63. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks (1974) 64. Jim Henson's Turkey Hollow (2015) 65. They Came from Beyond Space (1967)Decided to try another Elvira movie on YouTube. Went with a sci-fi one this time hoping it would have less random nudity that might get me in trouble if I watched it at work. This is not a good movie, but it's not a horrible one either. It has some goofy moments, but it also feels like an old Pertwee-era episode of Doctor Who at times, and like some genuine money and effort was put into it. It's just a mostly forgettable B-movie. And the Elvira stuff was more of the same from her, but this did include a preview for another movie, The Werewolf of Washington, which looks absolutely hilarious. I should check that out.

124. Funny Games (1997) - Watched this on HBO Max. I had heard the name of this movie before, but I never knew what the premise was. I think I remember seeing TV spots or trailers of the 2007 remake, but I had no real knowledge of this film. However, I had heard that the original is an Austrian film, and the same director did the remake, which I am now curious about. Now that I have seen this, I will give my take.
Going in, I read that this was a psychological thriller but having watched it, I saw that it was taken in a different kind of direction. I am not too familiar with films from Austria or Germany (I say this because of the actors in this were German), but I noticed that there was no score for the film. So you didn't get any ominous music to go with the suspense. In fact, you wouldn't expect some things to take a turn until it finally happens. It was also well shot and well acted. You actually feel for the victims in this and the makeup effects added to the overall suspenseful feel of this movie.
I had read that some people criticized a couple of things. One, the overall bleak feel about the family the duo terrorized. I think the writer and director went with a theme that fear can get the better of someone in some situations. There may be a chance that I'll revisit it to see some things that I miss, because that happens when re-watching things that you miss some things but then pick up on them on another viewing. The other criticism was the fourth-wall breaking. Now I personally don't mind breaking the fourth wall, but a certain scene made me wonder what the director went for. I wonder if there is a commentary on that bit.
As I said before, it's a well-shot and well-acted film. I really felt for the characters, but I will also note that it was a little slow in some areas. I am curious about the remake now.

38) "When Eight Bells Toll", 1971 British adventure film. *snip*7 out of 10. 39) "Seven", 1979 American action film. *snip*6 out of 10. 40) "Room Service", 1938 American comedy starring the Marx Brothers. A shady producer and his cast try to keep a hotel room in order to nail down financing for a new play. Only film not written specifically for the Marx Brothers, this was a Broadway play that was adapted for the screen. It shows. The film has very little of the 'usual shenanigans' you'd find in a Marx Brothers movie, the characters are more focused on task instead of sowing their brand of chaos on the unsuspecting rubes they're dealing with. Only the second movie that doesn't have a musical interlude from Chico or Harpo. It's still funny, but it's not Marx Brothers funny. 6 out of 10.

57. Samaritan
Twenty years after supposedly dying in a massive explosion, a superhero is found to be still alive. Will he help save the city from chaos and anarchy? Stallone was okay. The villains made the movie. I loved the cars the bad guys drove. It is worth a watch.

58. Trainwreck: Woodstock ‘99
It is actually a three part miniseries but since it comes in at just under two and a half hours and the wife and I binged it in one night, I am considering it a movie. The title says it all. It is a documentary about how the ‘99 reboot of Woodstock went from a great idea into a s**tstorm of bad planning and ended with riots, arson and the nation guard being called out. It was fascinating and we couldn’t stop watching until it was over.

125. Breaking (2022) - Saw this in theaters. Many a moment I have experienced going into a movie I had little-to-no knowledge about before seeing it. This was one of those moments, and I am glad that I saw it. Because I went into it blindly, the only knowledge I had was who was in it, as well as read the plot summary. I also had no idea that this was based on something that happened in real life.
I must say that this had to have been one of the more compelling movies that I have seen all year. John Boyega played the main character and he delivered a powerful performance as a veteran with PTSD. Aside from seeing him as Finn in the Star Wars films (the more recent ones, I mean), I had not seen him in other things. This movie showed that he could act. I now wonder about some other movies he has been in.
With the way the movie went on, I felt on edge as it progressed. I was on my toes wondering what will happen next. The supporting actresses gave strong performances, especially one in particular where you actually felt how scared she was in that situation. A lot of the camera work added the suspense and drama. Even some of the flashback scenes gave good insight on the main character. So much emotion added to this film, which when you think about it, a lot of the events depicted actually happened.
I'm glad I went to see this. I had not heard about it until I saw it it listed at my theater and thought "why not." In the end, it was worth it. It's a shame this wasn't advertised much, if at all.
