138. Suddenly (1996 TV movie) - Watched this on YouTube. For some reason this movie sprang to mind. I remember seeing ads for it way back when, whether it was in a newspaper or on TV. All I remember was that it starred Kirstie Alley, who had her hair dyed bleached blonde, and her character was paralyzed. Well, now that I've seen it, I shall talk about what I thought about it.
I know that TV movies don't have the highest budgets and this is no exception. What I found intriguing was the casting for this. Aside from its lead, who was known but has been in a lot of things for decades, this movie had Nancy Cartwright (aka Bart Simpson), as well as David Crosby (yes, you read that right) and Jason Beghe, who is currently known as Voight from Chicago PD.
I had read the plot outline and I was already able to see how the movie would play out. But on the other hand, I found it to be a rather touching film. Both Alley and Beghe worked well with one another. Alley showed her range as she was rather upbeat at the beginning and then did well at playing the role as a bitter person as the story progressed.
For what it is, it's definitely a sweet and touching film.

#461 - Freeway (Prime)

A wild but welcome take on Red Riding Hood that's intense and led by a hell of a performance by Reese Witherspoon. It has some pacing issues but is really good. [***½]
#462 - Black Adam (Theaters)

Like a lot of DCEU movies, there are some great ideas in there (the JSA is likable and Pierce Brosnan steals the show) but things are muddled and we really don't need the big CGI fight at the end as the story of Adam's arc is more interesting on its own. Still, it's inoffensive. [**½]

Terrifier 2 (Drive-in)
“Making people puke and pass out!”
Not really as brutal as I expected (plenty of gore, just not to the level of hype. The hacksaw kill in #1 was worse than anything here)
I enjoyed it for what it was. I like Art. Great silent character body language. The drive/in experience was fun too. My car battery died so I missed the audio for the post-credit scene where Chris Jericho was a Psych ward attendant.

Halloween Ends - For me, worst movie of the year and it may be the worst Halloween movie just due to the fact that this was the supposed ending to it all.
Rob Zombie's The Munsters - I get what he was going for, so I can understand why it was so silly. The problem it, it didn't really work. It's easy to watch the original cast do their thing for the runtime of a feature length movie, but it wasn't with this cast. I will say, it wasn't as awful as I thought it would be and the visuals were cool enough to keep my attention throughout.
Spirit Halloween: The Movie - I felt like I was obligated to watch this because it was filmed in my hometown. It felt like the most nothing movie I've seen. Not bad, not good, and not worth watching. It's basically just a movie advertising Spirit stores. I will say that the store they used for the movie is one of the shittiest ones I've ever been in and has never had a quarter of the things that they show in the movie. So seeing it looking like it didn't actually suck was entertaining.
The Accursed - I have no idea why I watched this. I guess because it's horror season. Yeah, this movie sucks and is a waste of time. Felt like DTV trash from the late 90's.
The Invited - Another one I just watched at random. Boring as hell.

Movies like this can only work if the actors have chemistry. Thankfully, Paulson and Duplass had it in spades. It's not my favorite movie like this and never truly grabbed me but it was good nonetheless. [***]

I think this would've worked better as a miniseries. There's a LOT to cover in here with some heavy material but it kind of gets rushed and can be messy. The performances are strong though, even if it doesn't fully tread on new ground. [**½]

I'm so glad I found a way to get this documentary on Blu-Ray. My favorite team of all time and on the third anniversary of them winning the World Series, I watched this again. I love it so much. [*****]

45) "Horror of Dracula", 1958 British Hammer horror film. *snip*8 out of 10. 46) "The Dark", 1979 American horror movie. *snip*7 out of 10. 47) "Hanger 18", 1980 American sci-fi thriller. *snip*7 out of 10. 47) "Dracula Has Risen From The Grave", 1968 British Hammer horror starring Christopher Lee as Dracula. Following the events of "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" (I haven't seen), Monsignor Mueller has fastened a cross to the door of Castle Dracula, while the local priest has accidentally revived Dracula from his frozen grave. Dracula is angry that he can't return to his castle and follows the Monsignor to Keinenberg to get revenge. Dracula takes control of the Monsignor's lovely daughter, kills the Monsignor, and takes her to remove the cross, while her boyfriend follows to stop Dracula. Great classic horror, updated for the 60's crowd. A stake through the heart now has a lovely bit of oozing blood, and the women display a nice bit of cleavage (the bar maid played by Barbara Ewing is very attractive). Great story as well, Dracula has a clear goal and is stopping at nothing to reach it. There's also a wonderful little problem of the boyfriend being an Atheist thrown into the mix. High marks. 8 out of 10. 48) "Taste The Blood Of Dracula", 1970 British Hammer horror starring Christopher Lee as Dracula. Following the events of "Dracula Has Risen From The Grave", a travelling salesman scoops up what was left of Dracula and returns to London. Years later, a 'circle' of distinguished gentlemen who lead secret lives pursuing debauchery meet a young man who promises them 'eternal pleasures'. They buy the remains of Dracula and the young man conducts a Satanic ritual to bring Dracula back, but the gentlemen back out... too late, Dracula is revived and goes to punish the 'gentlemen' by taking over their children. Only one goodhearted young can stop the Count before his love is lost forever. Another great bit of fun, full of story, blood, and cleavage. This one ties Dracula to satanism more strongly than previous stories, I suppose a sign of the times (the general public was more worried about satanism than classic monsters). According to the Wiki page, the original script didn't have Dracula at all, but was re-tooled when American distributors wouldn't show interest in it unless The Count was included (who wants to see a vampire movie WITHOUT Dracula?). Lee was starting to get bored with the role but was convinced to return. Again, high marks, lots of fun. 8 out of 10. EDIT: I'm cutting a point off of "Taste...", dropping it to 7 out of 10, because they had a great character in Lord Courtley (the young satanist) and just swapped him put with Dracula because of money. As I think about the movie a day later, I realize I wanted to know more about him. A lost opportunity.

Jackie Earle Haley does well enough here and the special effects are solid. They just never capture the magic of the original, there is almost no creativity to anything, and they even turned the protagonist into a lame character. [*½]

139. Halloween Ends - Watched this on Peacock. So I am one day removed from Halloween, when I had planned on binging on the films. No big deal. But I had also told myself to watch it. Thankfully I went with this approach because though I wanted to see it in theaters, some people told me it wasn't that good. However, I wanted to see it for myself. So I streamed it.
Okay, let me break it down like this. In some ways I wish I had re-watched Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills before this, but because only a handful of references were made, it wasn't that necessary (doesn't mean I won't, though). With that being said, I could see that the story for this one tried to be more than just "Michael Myers is back, and Laurie Strode has to defeat him." No, it was clear that the writers wanted something new. Also, because it was plural, it does feel like this was written by more than one person.
This film had an interest setup at first. I could get behind a story involving a social pariah who had the whole town against him and was able to connect with Allyson. I didn't mind their romantic subplot at first, but then the story took a different turn that I am not sure what the writers were going for. In some ways it felt like a young-adult novel with a romantic subplot. I could even say it felt like a romance novel with horror elements (I haven't read those kind; I have read romantic suspense, however). Then you had that main character start to develop without any real insight as to how or why. Okay, maybe "why" can be implied, if clear, but as I watched it, I thought to myself "Did the writers rip off 'Friday the 13th Part V' and 'Jason Goes to Hell'?" I also saw some similarities to Rob Zombie's Halloween II (which I am mixed on, for the most part).
I was not in the least bit surprised how the climax would have played out, but I saw that there was very little in the Michael Myers storyline that it was just added in because maybe one of the writers wrote that in the script and it couldn't have been ignored? This movie felt incomplete and disjointed.
I would say that I am mixed on the film for the most part, with the negatives outweighing the positives. I do appreciate that it does the slasher clichés with the kills and that it kept with the style of the previous two films with its low-light atmosphere. The storyline about Corey had promise, but I'm just not sure what the writers were going for in this film. I didn't even mind the romantic subplot between Allyson and Corey at first, but then when it started feeling like a teen romance with one opposing party and the other person getting dramatic about it, that was when things to annoy me.

This is kind of everything you want from the slasher genre. The story isn't all that great or interesting, the acting is goofy, and we get to see two monsters go at it. I had fun. [***]

140. Black Adam - Saw this in theaters. I had been going through some stuff lately and felt like going to see a movie. I was originally going to see it on opening day, but something came up. I went today to see it.
I won't pretend that I am an expert on this character because I am not. I may read a comic book in the near future. I know that there is also another DC character named Black Lightning, but that's neither here nor there. What I will say is that I went in with middle-of-the-road expectations because I had heard positive opinions about it as well as negative opinions about it. Personally, I had a lot of fun with this, but I am not going to end it here.
The Rock plays the titular character and it's clear right from the jump that he is an anti-hero. He mostly played the role straight because he was all around serious in this role. Yes, like other DC and Marvel movies, there is some levity but it isn't as overly done as a lot of Marvel movies had been lately, nor is it trying to be as dark and gritty as the earlier DCEU movies.
The story itself mainly had focus on the main character, as well as the MacGuffin with a power that could affect the world in a negative way. Yes, there was an antagonist and it did lead into the climactic battle, because these types of movies always have one, but most the story was centered on Adam. I liked how other DC characters such as Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Cyclone, and Atom Smasher were in it. I did not expect some of the Justice Society to be in this but it's not a bad way for DC to use some of their other characters besides the main ones like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, etc. Also, given its setting, the dirt-beige monochrome tone added to the feel of it being the Middle East, whether it was in the present day and also in the ancient past.
All I could say is that I found this to be one of DC's better outings in recent memory. There really hasn't been a lot in DC as of late (don't get me started on Wonder Woman 1984), but with them trying to do their universe again, I guess they're on the right track.
