This bodes ill for the idea of the mid-budget Hollywood movie, superheroed or not: considered too expensive for streaming as a one-shot deal, considered too cheap to bring in audiences into movie theatres.

Given the shit WB has already put out, I'm a little surprised they're now being like "This is bad".

I'm guessing if every single DC movie going forward is going to be Avengers level then they're going to very quickly stop making DC movies. The audience just plain isn't there for routine giant tentpole releases in this universe and you're not going to build one by forcing it.

From the sounds of it they'll use her again in a bigger production. Zaslav wants all DC movies to be Avengers-level pictures, so I figure they'll incorporate her into a Bat-Family movie or a team up with Supergirl. As an aside, here's the current list of DCEU projects currently in production (from Wikipedia, FWIW): Films: The Amazons, Black Canary, Booster Gold, Deadshot, Gotham City Sirens, Green Lantern Corps, Metal Men, Nightwing, Plastic Man, Static Shock, Supergirl, Wonder Woman 3, Zatanna TV: Justice League Dark, Madame X, and untitled series for Amanda Waller, John Constantine, The Suicide Squad, and Val-Zod They might as well stamp DOA on about 90% of that slate, because if Zaslav doesn't have faith in a member of the Bat Family (which might be Warner's most reliable brand at this point), then there's no way in hell he's moving forward in production on Madame Xanadu and Plastic Man. Out of the entire list, I have faith in Wonder Woman 3 making it to theaters. Apart from that, hope you like Batman and Joker, because that's all they have faith in. Wasn't there supposed to be a Blue Beetle TV series starring the kid from Cobra Kai in production? Or was that all rumors?

Wasn't there supposed to be a Blue Beetle TV series starring the kid from Cobra Kai in production? Or was that all rumors? Yeah, that's on me. I was listing stuff that they have "planned", I should probably rephrase. Of the stuff that's post-production or ready to release, you have Blue Beetle and the big four (Black Adam, Shazam 2, Aquaman 2, and The Flash). I think at least the first three of the big four are safe, time will tell if the Batgirl cancelation was just a primer for the big cancel, The Flash. Should be noted, technically they were able to cancel Batgirl so easily because "Warner Bros Discovery" hasn't put any money into it, just "WarnerMedia". If that is the case with Flash as well, then... we'll see. As for Blue Beetle, it wouldn't shock me if they canceled that, too. Their canceling Batgirl, who is part of their highest selling IP. No way they're taking a risk on Blue Beetle. Risks are for successful studios.

It really does feel like at times that even if not critically successful, Marvel stuff will always do at least well commercially (except for maybe Eternals?). DC is just like pure chaos.
As far as the characters go, I actually like DC more. I just wish they were in more capable and competent hands than Warner Bros. and their various corporate masters over the years.

Ok this is devastating news for me as someone who's biggest gripe about this is "lost media is bad". The fact that they can NEVER do a take backsies and release it under the radar if they take the tax writeoff. Thats... ugh. Unless they do it for free somehow, which they are not doing.

This whole situation reeks. But there's always more to the story that would make it worse than what it is.
I don't like not being able to see it at all though.

So it's so bad that they feel that even if it would make at least some money back, releasing it will hurt the DC movie/TV brand overall to such degree that burying it is for the best?

If Flash gets dumped too, I fully expect Michael Keaton to sue WB.
When this is over, he’ll probably own the rights to Beetlejuice.
