It was everything you want from a Star Trek show if you’ve been a longtime fan. I started watching with TNG, I’m born in 1986, but dad was insistent on me watching TOS and the movies. This felt like the Star Trek my dad went out of his way to make sure I watched. Basically start to finish I had a tiny tear in the corner of my eye, it was just a fun f***ing show. No Klingon titties or f bombs trying to be edgy, just a pure “what if we made TOS with modern cinematography techniques?” It helps that the entire cast is immediately likeable. Even as someone who enjoys Discovery, more than a few of those characters take some time to warm up to. Of course, having the most charming man in the universe and his impossibly perfect grey fox hair as your lead will help on that front. As with my earlier post, the show just feels comfortable and familiar. It's a classic Trek plot with classic Trek tropes telling a self-contained story while hinting at something bigger.

The overhanging darkness of Captain Pike’s future gives a good narrative through line, but it seems like they’re gonna go more “monster of the week” style for this show and I love that idea. Make it like DS9 where there’s a story arc running over the whole series, but it’s very easy to jump into an episode and 95% know what’s up And I also like Disco, but I have not been super enthusiastic about it this season. I still haven’t finished it, and it’s not that I don’t like it I’m just getting apathetic to it now

I've enjoyed every season so far, but I haven't even started the most recent one. The trailers left me with a sense of "Wow, another galaxy-threatening event? Really?" and finding out that {Spoiler}they demoted Mary Wiseman (Tilly) to special guest star status halfway through pretty much killed any lingering enthusiasm I had for it.

I enjoy Discovery as well but yeah it seems they feel they have to have these giant crazy arcs, though I think that is more on modern television expectations than anything. It's the same with any blockbuster movie, it's not enough that a few people are in danger or even a city, it has to be the world or the galaxy. I'm all for arcs in Star Trek, I rather enjoyed the dominion war. However, I've been craving some old school exploration Trek in the vein of TNG (only recently began checking out TOS) and it sounds like this will be the ticket. I'm going to check the first episode out tonight but I'm glad it seems to have done well.

It says a lot of how well a show is received that even the crowd who make a living off hating things have had to admit it was pretty good. There's still a couple of them doggedly hanging onto the "It's woke garbage!" lines, but even those more or less hang that entirely on {Spoiler}the use of January 6th footage in the war montage Pike plays for the Kiley.

I can't help but laugh when I see people complain about Star Trek being 'woke'. It's like people complaining that Rage Against the Machine is suddenly political. They must not have been paying attention all this time.
That said, I just finished the first episode of Strange New Worlds and I enjoyed it. I look forward to more.
One of the things I love about Star Trek is the optimistic view of humanity's future which admittedly can be difficult to fathom at times. As much as I can enjoy a dystopic sci-fi, it's nice to have that one that says 'yeah, things look like they're headed in a bad direction now but we'll find a way through it'.

This show is so freaking good. Just saw the first episode last night and watching the second this weekend. {Spoiler} I kinda loved the fake out of Lieutenant Kirk being Jim's brother Sam lol

Put me down as another Trek fan who has heard good things and gave the show a try. After being burned by Discovery and Picard, this was refreshing. It feels like exactly what I want from a Star Trek show. A cast of likable folks trying to help the galaxy with their wits and a healthy dose of techno babble.

Just watched the second episode. Another great one. I love all the little things in the show. Like Uhura's humming, Sam Kirk having a mustache (his one appearance in TOS was Shatner with a fake mustache playing dead lol), Chapel casually flirting with Spock. It's as much a love letter to TOS as it is a great new Star Trek show.
Favorite characters so far are Pike, Ortegas, Henner, and Chapel. But the whole crew is really damn likeable.

I watched the first two episodes.
I like it. It's very accessible for people not familiar with Star Trek. I tried Discovery (found it boring) and Picard seemed to require knowledge of past shows too much.
I think the no overarching plot and being more character driven helps. The characters all seem very likeable and look like they're all going to have clear story archs. So far, I am most interested in Captain Pike and Cadet Uhura.

Picard is definitely for fans of the 90s show. Discovery is in a very different place from where it started. However, it also seems to have a big overarching story each season. For some that's awesome but not for all. I've been a trek fan all my life and seen most of the original series, the four series from the 90s, the movies and Picard and discovery. I've found something to enjoy in each but I feel that I should note something: almost every Trek series takes about two seasons to find their footing. The original series was cancelled after two seasons until a fan movement got a third season. Most of my least favourite next generation episodes are in the first season. DS9, Voyager and Enterprise had starts that were not considered great by most but eventually came into their own. He'll discovery is super dark in the first season. You eventually find out why but I remember wondering what the heck was up. Strange new worlds is great so far and I hope that continues. I like having an episodic trek alongside the other series.

While we're on the subject, the 25th anniversary edition of the Star Trek fan documentary Trekkies was released on blu ray yesterday and I'm so pleased with how tremendously it holds up. There's a great 25 minute extra about the making of / legacy of the film too.
Here's my full review and, in honor of its re-release, I re-posted my 2019 interview with George Takei:

Just caught up on the most recent couple of episodes. Of all the characters I did not expect to see, I can comfortably say {Spoiler}f***ing Sybok is top of that list.

Unless the last batch of episodes is just dire, this could go down as the best first season of any Trek show.
