Another excellent episode this week. A great mixture of humor, that type of TOS-style crazy concepts, as well as a bittersweet conclusion.

I did like that this episode managed to shift to a couple of characters that we'd seen very little of. I enjoy Spock but frankly I was hoping for an episode that wasn't about him or his marriage. Plus, I imagine the actors had fun playing such different characters. Overall it was an enjoyable addition.

I know the last episode was basically Alien in Star Trek, but it hit every beat perfectly. I'm gonna call it now, even if the season finale stinks this has still been the best debut season of Star Trek, period. {Spoiler}I'm genuinely shocked they killed Hemmer off so soon into the run. I always assumed he'd end up making way for Scotty at some point, but he made a big impression with the few appearances he made.

{Spoiler}I think Lieutenant Duke's death was as telegraphed as Hemmer's was shocking. Only way they could've made it even more obvious was of they gave the poor sod a red uniform lol.
There hasn't been a bad episode yet, and I can't wait for the season finale this week.

I was like "Oh, they're making a big deal out of this background character's promotion? They're razzing Spock for mis-ranking him? Just name him Deady McDeadmeat, already."
Pour one out for Cadet Chia, too. You just knew when Pike made his speech about taking the cadets on one last away mission one wouldn't be coming back, and given the other cadet was Uhura, well...

A "Balance of Terror" prequel. Nice.

Given the name of the episode, I was expecting something with the Klingons (maybe one of the Big Three of Kor, Koloth, and Kang) or the Organians. But I guess Romulans work well, too.

Okay, I was wrong, not a prequel. {Spoiler}An alternate future.
Two Pikes! The slashfic community are gonna have a field day with this.

That was a really good season. The first Star Trek I have gotten into after trying and failing with Picard and Discovery.
I think the fact it was stand alone episodes without an overarching narrative helped, plus it was very newcomer friendly.

I absolutely loved this whole season. They made the Gorn terrifying and Anson Mount as Pike is just so damn charming.

As a huge fan of the Original Series, I'm absolutely in love with this show. Just finished it the last episode and wow, what an amazing Star Trek. I fell out after DS9/Voyager, never got into Enterprise. I liked the new movies for what they were, but the Paramount+ series have done little to interest me. I tried with Discovery but just couldn't get through, and Picard just doesn't hold any interest for me. But this? Wow. Anson Mount, in one season, has cemented himself as one of the best captains. He just carries himself with that same "swagger" (for lack of a better word...bravado?) that Shatner did as Kirk. I love the callbacks to TOS, too, and had to stop this last episode to watch Balance of Terror so I could catch the callbacks. {Spoiler}That said, the actor who played Kirk in this last episode was really, really, really bad casting. Dude was not Kirk in the slightest bit. And don't give me that "oh, he's a Kirk who never captained the Enterprise" crap, Kirk being Kirk is how he gets himself into the kind of stuff he got himself into on the Enterprise, so I'm sure he would've done the same on the Farragut.

Mount as Pike legit might have already become my favourite Trek lead character. He’s got this charm and charisma that I would 100% follow into any battle, situation, whatever. He’s a dude I want as my boss

The meme is right. Sisko is Captain Dad, but Pike is Captain Daddy.

About a year ago I finally got around to watching The Original Series (as a kid I'd never really had any interest in it when my dad was watching it, even though we watched the crap out of TNG together). I only got partway through season 2 but so far the throwbacks I've caught in Strange New Worlds have been excellent. As others have mentioned, this has probably been the best first season of Star Trek to date. All series have Star Trek previously have needed 2-3 seasons to really find their voice and footing while Strange New Worlds knocked it out of the park right off the bat. It's quite commendable. While I have enjoyed aspects of Discovery (better now that it found its footing) and Picard, it's nice to return to the episodic exploration and this is coming from someone who loved the serial storytelling that found its way into DS9.
I am hoping we get a lot more episodes because 10 per season is just not enough.
I also echo that Captain Pike is fantastic.

Which is funny because one of the complaints about Pike from the original pilot was that he was too cold and boring. The events of The Cage were supposed to reenliven Pike and make him more likeable. Does Strange New Worlds take place before or after The Cage?

Does Strange New Worlds take place before or after The Cage? I believe the visit to Talos IV happens before the series starts, I think that’s 15 years prior to TOS and this series is 8ish years before TOS, and the whole show is building to the accident that leads to The Menagerie. It’s souls crushing that everything in this show is building to that accident

Finale was excellent. I don't think there's a single episode this season I disliked. {Spoiler}I marked for seeing Admiral Pike in the movie era uniform. And the music that played during the reveal of the Romulans as Vulcan offshoots. I also really liked the Kelvin namedrop, Uhura's look during the alternate future, the reversal of fates (the bride dying with Pike as captain as opposed to the groom during the original episode; Spock getting Pike's injuries), implied Scotty, and the designs of the Farragut, the Romulan bird of prey, and the other Romulan ships.
The attention to detail was incredible.
