So... I'm pretty sure there's a few hip hop and rap fans on here.
So, fellow FANs, who is the greatest rapper ever?
Me? I'd go Eminem. He's just on another level.
But it's a debate certainly and many could fight for the throne... so... what says you?

There is no such thing as the best rapper ever, only your fave. Its like the best guitarist ever.

There truly is no defined rubric for what makes someone stand out as a lyricist in a subjective artform, but to me, several traits jump to the forefront as prevalent skills in those consistently considered the best.
So here is my checklist of desired attributes for building the perfect emcee:
-Cadence, vocal clarity and delivery style(s) >> Bun B, Pharoahe Monch or Sage Francis
-Flow / pocket quality and diversity >> Big Daddy Kane, Swamburger or Insight
-Emotional appeal and relatability >> The Gift of Gab, Slug or Posdnuos
-Use of literary devices (alliteration, onomatopoetics, extended metaphors, syllable stressing, [internal] rhyme schemes, vivid imagery and storytelling, etc.) >> Rakim, J-Live or The Notorious B.I.G.
-Word choice and variation >> Aesop Rock, Black Thought or GZA
-Memorable, layered cleverness >> MF DOOM, manChild or Aceyalone
-Wide range of subject matter and unique topics >> Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar or Open Mike Eagle
-Captivating performance live and on record >> Chuck D, Lyrics Born or Watsky
-Innovation >> Ice Cube, Treach or Q-Tip
-Regular, full display of numerous skills >> Cee-Lo, Mos Def or Phonte
All that to say my all-star starting five includes The Gift of Gab, Andre 3000 Benjamin, Rakim, J-Live and Aesop Rock.
If anyone wants any starting point recommendations for any name mentioned, let me know!

I'll always say Hov wins this category. Besides having numerous classics he's been able to do what a lot can't and that's evolve through the times. We've seen Mafioso Jay, street hustler/Bully Era Jay, rap superstar Roc La Familia Jay, "GOAT/Best Rapper Alive" Era Jay, super rich "Art Rap Era" Jay and now we're in a new era which is one of his best from a quality standpoint. You got that, you got the impact on hip-hop culture, you've got him rapping over all different kinds of beats since Hawaiian Sophie, numerous flows, technical skill, lyrics, you even got his quotables.
So yeah, Jay for me. Being able to show out in 4 different decades with the variety, evolution and just overall everything that comes to that isn't easy.

If anyone wants any starting point recommendations for any name mentioned, let me know! I might have to look up some of the ones you have mentioned. I may have to share a slight annoyance that I have had as a longtime hip-hop fan. For decades, every hip-hop head I know always says Tupac is the greatest of all-time. I won't deny what he had done and the passion in his lyrics, but even as far back as the early-2000s, people I know had said Tupac had said that he was the best and if you don't agree, you're wrong. It still has been going on to this day.

I've never been able to say definitely who I think is the best ever but there are a few eras that I think are almost untouchable.
99-04 MF DOOM Illmatic-It Was Written Nas Eminem's 99-02 run with SSLP, MMLP, TES and the 8 Mile soundtrack Ice Cube from NWA through his first 3 solo albums 98-99 Mos Def Not that he's even really fallen off but 95-02 Black Thought Almost all of the Wu-Tang Clan in the 90s

Best ever is subjective as hell, but honestly I feel if you combined all of your categories Jay-Z would rank highest because he is damn near perfect at most categories…even if he rides waves like a jet ski…
I’m more into lyricism so someone like Nas or Lupe Fiasco is more of my go to…for me Drogas Wave may be the best album to come out in the last 5 years.
Then you have your super technical rappers like Eminem and someone like a Hopsin, they can rap circles around almost all rappers but their subject matter normally bores me to death once you get past the gimmicks…

Immortal Technique is my favourite but I think his good stuff is awesome and his not so good stuff isn't very good at all.
I would have loved to seen Biggie's career play out and what his longevity would be. I think he could have been the goat.
