Can’t remember where I heard it, but I once heard this joke:
“With the water theme they people will be calling it “Dancing with Snorks”

Never saw the first one. It just didn't seem interesting to me.

Even though it's been however many years since the first one, the Navi are *still* somehow managing to land in that weird uncanny valley zone next to "comic artists that have never drawn anthro characters being asked to draw anthro characters".
Is anybody actually nostalgic for the original? I swear the only Navi people are nostalgic for are the ones that used to follow you around and go HEY! LISTEN! all the time.

They aren't as widespread as, say, Zack Snyder fans, but when you stumble across an Avatar fan on social media they are their own special brand of obsessive. To hear them tell it, King James is back and he's going to redefine cinema yet again and put an end to those silly comic book movies.

Really I just hope this movie does poorly enough that it doesn't cannibalize Shazam a couple of weeks later. Though on the off-chance it were to outright bomb (well, either way this thing's probably losing money due to the absurd amount of resources poured into this whole underwater filming thing that doesn't really seem interesting or worthwile to begin with, but I mean outright draw low numbers in isolation) seeing James Cameron fall flat on his face would be very satisfying.

I've seen bits and pieces of the first and just didn't really care about it. It then made a gajillion dollars.
I rode the Avatar ride at Disney World a few years ago, and found it kind of "eh". The line was enormous and it's one of the most popular new rides they've put in the parks, and I've read about people saying that they even teared up riding it.
I, uh, don't really get it, but for whatever that's all worth...

Never saw the first one. It just didn't seem interesting to me. If you didn’t see it in theatres, it’s really not worth watching. It was a visual spectacle in 3D theatres, it’s average as all f*** watching it at home

It was a visual spectacle in 3D theatres, it’s average as all f*** watching it at home Yeah. The graphics had been a thing of legend for years and years and years. Initially watching it was a spectacle. Then the mediocrity pours through. However, that’s not exactly all uncommon even today. The question is if consumers will care. I remember people at the time speaking of “pandora depression” or something from “wanting to return to pandora” after watching the movie. The thought did occur to me watching this trailer that there doesn’t seem to be a huge technological leap. Visually, Dune looked far more “new” than anything in this. Hell, if the Top Gun sequel and this came out next week and I got to watch one in IMAX, I’d go with the former easily. My big intrigue with this really is seeing if Cameron rises to the occasion (yet again) or takes the colossal L everyone’s expecting it to be.

For the last 13 years I keep forgetting Avatar exists until it's brought up randomly and I'll go "oh yeah that stupid movie with the blue cat people" and then five minutes later I'll forget it exists again. I suspect the same will happen with this movie.

With characters coming back from the dead, seemingly the same plot... Maybe it's just like Mad Max - where every movie is a loose retelling of all the others like some sort of legend. lolololololol.

Has Cameron ever had anything that wasn't a huge success he directed? I guess Piranha II in 1982.
And he's only 67, I thought for sure he was close to 80.

Loved the original, can't wait to see where they go with this one. An oceanic setting with the kind of budget this movie has should be visually stunning. I am VERY curious how some of these characters get resurrected. It felt like they made it a point to make certain people extremely dead, and...now they're not? I guess if MGS is over, nanomachines it is.

Mistakenly read the title as if it were a Katara origins story then realized it was just the James Cameron sequel he and his crew been working on for years.

Has Cameron ever had anything that wasn't a huge success he directed? The Abyss only just managed to break even. It's easy to forget he's not a prolific director. Since 1978 he's only directed ten movies, and only three movies in the last 25 years (Titanic, Avatar, and Avatar 2).

The original has been so crapped on, and even I did my share back my day, for what is a decent sci-fi action flick that it's gone back around to being underrated in some respects. It wasn't amazing but I enjoyed it.
I'm more interested in the sequel if only because Cameron has sequel magic and I'm curious to wether this breaks it.

It's been awhile since I saw the first one, but I didn't understand why the evil company couldn't just bomb the big tree like the next day.

I’m still trying to figure out how the original is the highest grossing movie of all time, and then I remember it was re-released three times.
