So that means it has to do better than The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion) or Titanic ($2.187 billion) to break even. I'm sorry, what? People shouldn't ignore that He said break even, f*** a profit at that range. How was this movie even made with those goals and expectations in mind And this is just this film. We've got to think about the other sequels in the pipeline, too.

www.escapistmagazine.com/avatar-lack-cultural-footprint-best-feature/In a conversation I had with a friend yesterday, both Avengers: Endgame and Avatar came up. I've seen Endgame a bunch of times, but Avatar only twice, maybe? My friend mentioned that he loved the last scene of Endgame, but in the moment, I couldn't for the life of me recall what that was (Steve Rogers dancing with an alt-timeline Peggy Carter). But I could easily remember something as mundane as Jack Sully landing on Pandora and how much the 3D during that scene made my eyes hurt.

Having to make 2 billion dollars to cover the cost of your 250 million dollar movie feels like someone should look under his mattress for at least 1.5 billion dollars.

There's been chatter going on about this for awhile, that the stupid (and really completely pointless because wires and CGI work fine) underwater mocap technology they used for this was so expensive that they'd need like three movies worth of hits to actually make anything from it. Very stupid.

Make that much just to break even is ludicrous

The biggest thing I remember from the original is everyone talking about how pretty it was. The story was weak, paint by numbers and they actually used the word unobtanium. I had zero interest in a sequel back then and honestly, I have zero interest in a sequel now. It may surprise me but I have zero faith in that. No breaths will be held.

Now watch as it gets banned from the Chinese market for some reason and becomes one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, despite making a billion at the box office.

I think it was announced just the other day that Avatar 2 is getting a Chinese release date, the first Disney film since 2019 to do so.

How the heck is this movie so expensive? Was it 100 grand to CGI each leaf or something?

How the heck is this movie so expensive? Was it 100 grand to CGI each leaf or something? The general feeling is Cameron is doing what Cameron does and exaggerating, or ay the very least grouping the expenditure of the two sequels already filmed and the preproduction costs of the two other sequels in the works as one single cost.

Just saw the trailer for this before Glass Onion the other night.
I still can't quite fathom why it's being made.

The first one made a pooptonne of money and they committed to making more before they realised how little cultural impact is had beyond it's cinema run. It's present day Hollywood, they'd make a sequel to Titanic if they thought they could get away with it.

You actually probably could pretty easily do a sequel to Titanic really, just tell the stories of other passengers on the ship. That or do the Britannic. Or gaslight James Cameron into thinking the Titanic had another sister ship called the Gigantic to trick him into making a Zero Escape movie.

Well, Cameron has never lacked confidence in his movies, that's for sure.

Maybe that's code for "the plot doesn't advance between sitting through it and taking a break"
