He's John Cena with a much smaller ego who wrestles like a mix of Eddie Guerrero and Shawn Michaels

I know nothing about him sadly. Or any of the talent coming in for Forbidden Door. I only really got into NJPW around 2016, 2017 onwards and cooled off by 2019 but Tanahashi is as good as the hype. Natural pure babyface of the most old school variety possible. Looks like an anime superhero, carries himself like one. Goku if he wasn't dumb and didn't overshadow everyone else. John Cena if his character wasn't a bulletproof hypocrite. Wrestling wise he's outstanding, he tells a story and conveys emotion so so well, everything he does in his matches matters and builds on itself and previous matches. His marathons with Okada are great but for me, if you really want to get him watch his run from the 2017 G1 to Wrestle Kingdom 13. The story was of the former king of the mountain already dethroned by Okada starting to pass his prime, seeing others like Naito, Omega and Ibushi hitting their prime and young guns like Jay White and ZSJ coming up, doubting if he could keep up. He has to try put rookie heel White in his place then gets nearly crippled by old rival and ZSJs mentor, bitter veteran Minoru Suzuki and fears he's breaking down entering the 2018 G1, knowing he has to get past both Okada (who is also trying to recover from a slump) and his protege/Omega's best friend Kota Ibushi if he's to get back to the top- which he feels he has to to save the company's soul from Kenny Omega. It's utterly captivating stuff, one of the best examples of "is X wrestler still able to do it or is he past it" you'll ever see.

Shame you dropped off, miss you in the New Japan threads Covid killed my interest in wrestling for a bit, couldn't deal with empty arenas, but with NJPW it was more my own dumb fault, I lost my bank card, cancelled it, it cancelled my NJPW World subscription and so I missed the first few G1 2019 shows waiting for the new card and just never caught up. What's the stuff I need to catch up on since as I've basically seen nothing since White's first title win.

Crowds aren't still what they are, they can't cheer due to Japanese covid restrictions. 2020 New Japan sucked quite frankly, so skip the whole EVIL title reign era. Honestly I think picking out Shingo's title matches, then this year's New Japan Cup is a great way to start and get caught up. This years BOSJ was good to, with a bunch of new guys getting introduced.

Best Wrestler ever since 2010 I honestly don’t know because of the presence of Okada. Okada is the best main event wrestler of all time, but Tanahashi is right there and is probably better than him if both are lower on the card.

I don't think there's any singular talent who's as important to the success (if not outright existence) of their company as Tanahashi is to New Japan. Maybe Austin and Hogan were to WWF. The Ace is just that good.

The Ace is just that good. Austin's a good comp, which is funny considering they're basically polar opposites in presentation. The Rock also works as a decent Okada comp, funnily enough.

Okada will never elicit the kind of sympathy that Tana does.

In what might be surprising to you, Taichi got REALLY popular and has been genuinely really good, forming a great tag team with Zack Sabre Jr., who has become much more charismatic than he used to be. Will Ospreay has a stable, but Jeff Cobb and Great O-Khan are frankly much more interesting than him in it and have gotten over. The latter got over a LOT, in large part because he saved a 10 year old from a drunken man accosting her. Oddly, when asked by her and police who he was, he gave his gimmick name and said to thank him, they could watch NJPW. Also, YOSHI-HASHI got a little bit credible and while he still isn't like, a top guy or anything, he won a few titles and raised his stock immensely. He's escaped "living punchline" status.

He’s also very well-trained. He first started under Tatsumi Fujinami. A man so good even Bret Hart said he wished he could be a good as him. Then, he trained in the dojo under Kensuke Sasaki. Finally, he was mentored by Keiji Mutoh during his time as All Japan president. Tanahashi himself said he learned the most about the business itself from Mutoh.
He also obsessively studied from guys like Tito Santana, Ricky Steamboat, and his favorite wrestler: Shawn Michaels.
Another point in his favor: Scott Hall personally requested to put him over when he was just a Young Lion. Telling everyone who’s listen that Tanahashi was going to be a massive star.

He’s also infamous for crying at the drop of a hat.
But not an ugly cry. More like what Prince sang about when talking about how doves cry.
