I get why a thread like this exists, but just seeing "Sell me on Tanahashi" like it's something that needs to be done hurts my heart. How I see it:

If Tanahashi slapped his dick on yr kitchen counter you would decorate around it Is this why there are so many photos of him in kitchens wearing aprons? Easy access?

Watch his G1 28 Finals match against Kota Ibushi where he sold so well that it looked like Ibushi was literally beating him to death. This post is less to convince the OP (though he should watch it if able) than to reiterate how good that whole G1 performance was. It's probably the best "wiley veteran proves he still has it" run I've ever seen. The Omega vs Okada feud had attracted the most international eyes in years - again, partly due to Tana making Okada into such a big star - that all the buzz was on wether it'd be Okada, Naito or Ibushi winning the tournament to face Kenny at Wrestle Kingdom 13. But it was Tanahashi who survived the tournament with grit, smarts and sheer will to set a record 15 points in the 20-man field. Even among die-hard pick-em players Tana was not a pick to win his block, let alone the whole thing. In the final against Ibushi he absorbed ungodly punishment, as expected, but then dished it back out even harder at the end. He triumphed by tapping into all his big match experience in one of the best finishes ever. Then did the same against Omega at the dome. That whole run turned me from an admirer into one who has him in my all-time top 5.

I love Tanahashi so much. He might be my favorite wrestler ever.
Just a guy who looked at pro wrestling in the 2000s in Japan, when MMA influence was eating it up and it just didn't feel like pro wrestling and went "This isn't right." Where was the FIRE? Where were the HEROES? Where was that mythic quality that makes it pro wrestling? So he became the Ace. And even all this time later he's still trying to protect pro wrestling. He's the best.

Just catching up on the thread, and I agree with the people calling for a Tanahashi win. It’d make the title even more of a world title as it will have been defended outside of North America. As for the people saying we can’t have the champ not appear (ala Brock), with it being G1 season, AEW could have images/videos of Tana with the title during the G1, give updates via commentary about how he’s doing in his group/tournament overall, and possibly a few pretaped interviews. There is also Punk who could cut a few promos from home/local studio reminding people he’s the “real” champion who will be returning soon. The champion doesn’t need to appear in person all of the time.

Casual fans of AEW need a video production or highlight reel of who these new japan wrestlers are and what makes them special. Every single time we get a cross over like this both AEW and back when TNA was doing a similar thing they failed to keep the tv audience informed.
Seems such a basic thing to do. At the very least a youtube video explaining who these wrestlers are.

Bumping this thread to point out that he got Chicago to cheer him over Jon Moxley.

Haven't had much exposure to Tanahashi, but watching him tonight, my initial impressions were kind of like a Japanese Shawn Michaels.

Tanahashi has a great mind for wrestling, it's why he's so good at flipping from face to heel when he senses the crowd will root for the other guy. The exciting thing to me is that I don't think he has the "it just comes natrual to me, I can't explain it" blocker that Danielson for example says prevents him from being a good trainer. I cannot wait for the New Japan young lions 5-10 years from now, as having guys like Shibata, Nagata, Liger and inevitably Tanahashi to learn from is just utterly disgusting. Can see Naito doing the dojo as well tbh, mind-blowing levels of talent there.

Covid killed my interest in wrestling for a bit, couldn't deal with empty arenas, but with NJPW it was more my own dumb fault, I lost my bank card, cancelled it, it cancelled my NJPW World subscription and so I missed the first few G1 2019 shows waiting for the new card and just never caught up. What's the stuff I need to catch up on since as I've basically seen nothing since White's first title win. In what might be surprising to you, Taichi got REALLY popular and has been genuinely really good, forming a great tag team with Zack Sabre Jr., who has become much more charismatic than he used to be. Will Ospreay has a stable, but Jeff Cobb and Great O-Khan are frankly much more interesting than him in it and have gotten over. The latter got over a LOT, in large part because he saved a 10 year old from a drunken man accosting her. Oddly, when asked by her and police who he was, he gave his gimmick name and said to thank him, they could watch NJPW. Also, YOSHI-HASHI got a little bit credible and while he still isn't like, a top guy or anything, he won a few titles and raised his stock immensely. He's escaped "living punchline" status. The YOSHI and Taichi news really warms my heart, always had a soft spot especially for Taichi. ZSJ gaining charisma is basically all I ever wanted to finally view him as the real deal. O'Khan is the guy who went to Rev Pro right? Wild news on him that. Love it when guys still live the gimmick.

I love Taichi's entrance so much. He's a solid wrestler, too, but the entrance is so over the top and awesome.
