Who gives a damn though? Why does one guy's opinion matter so much to wrestlers? He actually claimed a few weeks ago that his ratings aren't even his personal opinion on the match or about what he likes or dislikes as ridiculous as that sounds. Which begs the question, if he's claiming it's some kind of objective measurement he's using, what is that? It can't be crowd reaction. There are plenty of matches that have the crowd going crazy he gave poor ratings too. Basically matches that make him uncomfortable, like super violent matches or lots of head drops/super stiff head shots, are the ones I can think of off the top of my head that’s he’s rated incredibly high but didn’t personally enjoy them. His criteria tends to be in ring storytelling, did it achieve the goal of what it was trying to accomplish, in ring execution, crowd engagement, and build as the big ones I can think of but I’m sure there are more.

Yeah, even if I don't agree with some of it, and I don't think he obviously is entirely unbiased, being a human being and all, but it does make some level of sense. He's also said plenty of times that numbers higher than 5 are still basically something someone ought to just treat as a 5, it's not meant to be taken that seriously. I do know lots of people think it began with Okada/Omega, but I'm pretty sure Misawa got a 6 first. Looking it up, yep, back in '94 vs Kawada. Misawa to this day still comfortably has the most 5 star matches, though Okada has a decent chance of tying or surpassing it someday, being behind by like 3. EDIT: Correction, Flair and Steamboat got 6 stars first, back in 1989. The ratings didn't even make it to 10 years before he started with that.

There was a period in the 00’s where he was VERY stingy with giving out 5 star ratings. He only gave out a handful over many years.
IDK why? He was never that way before that and certainly not afterwards?

He is inevitably going to give another five star rating to Ronda vs. Shotzi from Smackdown tonight. *Am I joking? Am I serious, well you'll just have to watch the match to know for sure. ![:P](//storage2.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I don't care about Meltzer's opinions. He has a clear anti-WWE bias when it comes to his rankings. He's just a dude who has an opinion, I get that. But his opinion has had a negative impact on how wrestlers view building a match. I absolutely hate the Young Bucks spot fest style of matchmaking but they get a 4-star match anytime they step in the ring. The fact that the terrible Young Bucks vs The Hardy's match from DON got 4 stars is a freaking joke. Anyone saying Meltzer has an anti WWE bias is a "tell me you don't listen to Meltzer without telling me you don't listen to Meltzer" thing. If anything, he will defend them a lot to his partner Bryan Alvarez. He's just not a complete shill for them but he actually likes their product even when he's critical. He also has his personal likes and dislikes. He had nothing but praise for the black and gold Era of NXT for example because that kind of product was more to his tastes. Tbh that's like calling you an E-drone because you're more defensive of WWE than most. It's unnecessarily reductive and dismissive. The worst was a the very beginning of the life of AEW where Meltzer basically wanted AEW to be like NXT and it would basically be Alvarez defending AEW and Meltzer NXT. And yet Meltzer was the AEW Shill. In terms of ratings I take it as I take the review of any professional in any area, I respect it more than rando user and its fun(well supposed to) to discuss but nothing really serious.

And hell, even with him being more critical of WWE than Meltzer is in many cases, Bryan has some stuff he consistently likes, such as being a big Orton fan.

Are we still saying Meltzer has an anti-WWE bias in the year 2022?
People do realize that clips of Wrestling Observer radio are freely accessible on YouTube, right? Like, I’ve listened to enough clips where he justifies a lot of what WWE does because it fits their mode of booking rather than just saying it’s good or bad.

All I have to add is that Dave Meltzer's brother is a famous Juggler named Scott Meltzer, and I can't imagine those family dinners.

"Can you, umm, pass me the, uhh, the thing is, I'd like it if you stopped juggling the salt and uh, pepper shakers, and passed them to me? You know, Sam Muchnick liked black pepper on his potatoes..."

I’ll never get into a hubbub about meltzers ratings but i tend to more disagree with him than not these days. I thought this match was awesome. And very impressive how both men pulled off their respective parts. But 5 stars? Eh. His opinion. For comparison, I thought Becky Vs Bianca would get 5 stars.

I can't believe Meltzer gives a main roster WWE match five stars and yet the thread morphs into "Yeah but he doesn't like WWE enough".
Anyway yeah mark me down too in the "this was a bad idea and giving it five stars does not set a good precedent" column. I don't buy all the hemming and hawing that people do things just to make Daddy Meltz happy and he's the secret tastemaker of wrestling who everyone tries to appease, but the things that seem to have elevated that match are the parts of it that should not be encouraged.

That Hardy's match wasn't good but The Bucks have had some amazing matches in the past few years so I get it. Anyway, Meltz has given some WWE matches high ratings before but their over-produced style just isn't for him, and I get it honestly.

Having not seen the match I won't cast opinions on that, and Meltzer's entitled to his opinion (even if personally I put no real stock in it), though I will say that so long as we're throwing shade at Cody matches he's given five stars to I thought the Sammy ladder match was dogshit.
