Not surprised. He has been gushing about this match since it happened.
Between this and the HIAC match with Edge. Seth is determined to make up for the disaster that was his Cell Match with the Fiend.

Would've been six in the Tokyo Dome. But the match would've probably lasted even longer and my right arm hurts just thinking about that.

Dave is entitled to his opinion but honestly I think there have been a ton of 5 star level matches in main roster WWE in the decade+ since the last time he gave one that rating (Cena/Punk MITB 11). I would rate all of the following 5 stars (or certainly higher than Cody/Seth):
Taker/HHH Wrestlemania 28 Lesnar/Cena Extreme Rules 2012 Punk/Bryan Over the Limit 2012 Cena/Punk Raw 2013 Lesnar/Punk Summerslam 2013 Cena/Bryan Summerslam 2013 Shield/Wyatts Elimination Chamber 2014 HHH/Bryan Wrestlemania 30 Shield/Evolution Payback 2014 Lesnar/Cena/Rollins Royal Rumble 2015 Cena/Owens Elimination Chamber 2015 Charlotte/Sasha/Becky Wrestlemania 32 Reigns/Styles Extreme Rules 2016 Owens/Zayn Battleground 2016 Cena/Styles Summerslam 2016/Royal Rumble 2017 Team Raw/Team Smackdown Survivor Series 2016 New Day/Usos Hell in a Cell 2017 Lesnar/Styles Survivor Series 2017 Becky/Charlotte Evolution 2018 Lesnar/Bryan Survivor Series 2018 Bryan/Kofi Wrestlemania 35 Becky/Sasha Hell in a Cell 2019 Orton/Edge Backlash 2020 Bayley/Sasha Hell in a Cell 2020 Sasha/Bianca Wrestlemania 37 Roman/Edge/Bryan Wrestlemania 37 Rollins/Edge Summerslam/Crown Jewel 2021 Becky/Bianca Wrestlemania 38
And my dark horse choice is Angle and Rousey v HHH and Stephanie at Wrestlemania 34. I think that is one of the most perfectly booked matches ever. On paper it could have been a disaster. A completely broken down Kurt Angle. A debuting Ronda Rousey. HHH who was in his 40s and a part-timer and Stephanie who had wrestled once in the previous 15 years. It ended up being f***ing amazing though.

Would've been six in the Tokyo Dome. This is what annoys me about Meltzer. There should be nothing that goes above Five Stars. You can say that a certain match is the best of the matches rated as Five Stars, but otherwise you're creating an insane metric to try to follow.

Yeah and before that, I would put: - Bret vs Owen - WrestleMania X - Triple H vs Steve Austin - No Way Out 2001 - TLC II - WrestleMania X-Seven - The Rock vs Steve Austin - WrestleMania X-Seven - Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit - Royal Rumble 2003 - HHH vs HBK vs Benoit - WrestleMania XX - Kurt Angle vs HBK - WrestleMania 21 - HBK vs Undertaker - WrestleMania XXV and 26

I thought the Womens title match on the show was just as good if not better than the HIAC so there’s where’s the consistency doesn’t work for me.
It’s all one guys opinion though of course if Meltzer wasn’t feelin that match as much as the HIAC fine.

Fun fact, three of WWE’s six main roster five-star matches have taken place in the same arena (Allstate Arena/Rosemont Horizon), they being Rhodes v Rollins at Hell In A Cell 2022, Cena v Punk at Money In The Bank 2011 and Bret v Austin at WrestleMania XIII. And if you count Bret v Owen from SummerSlam 1994 at the United Center, it means four out of six have taken place in Chicago.

I don’t normally do star ratings, but yeah, I liked most of those matches just as much as Cody/Seth in the Cell, and that was a damn good Cell match so that says quite a bit.

I don't care about Meltzer's opinions. He has a clear anti-WWE bias when it comes to his rankings. He's just a dude who has an opinion, I get that. But his opinion has had a negative impact on how wrestlers view building a match. I absolutely hate the Young Bucks spot fest style of matchmaking but they get a 4-star match anytime they step in the ring. The fact that the terrible Young Bucks vs The Hardy's match from DON got 4 stars is a freaking joke.

And apparently go to Negative Eleven. Because Dave has decided to go up to Seven Stars and down to Negative Five Stars, he literally has 52 potential match ratings available to him. That's insane. You may as well grade matches by percentage at this rate.

You may as well grade matches by percentage at this rate. It's not as good as 57 or 42, but 52 is a pretty nice number. And don't blame Dave for the MINUS FIVE STARS! - blame TNA and Vince Russo.
