Worst WrestleMania main event of the PG-Era?

For me, Cena - Miz who was really boring and who was just a preview for the WrestleMania M-E of the next year.

Reigns/Undertaker.

It was a bad match in general, and it was a result that the crowd wasn't really looking to see either.

I was tempted to go with 32 based on how much the crowd hated it, but went with 34 given it wasn’t the first time we got an unwanted Brock/Roman match (and obviously wasn’t the last), and which continued their trend of a match lasting under 10 minutes and consisting of both guys spamming their finishers.

Roman/Undertaker. They (Undertaker mostly) were botching moves left and right. It was just sad seeing Undertaker out there looking so out of shape and past his prime. And the only thing that made it worthwhile (Undertaker seemingly retiring after the match) was nullified when he came back the next year anyway.

There was no kayfabe reason for it to main event either. It wasn't a huge draw/dream match. It wasn't a title match. It obviously wasn't a retirement match. They didn't have any kind of great build. In fact, the whole thing started with Roman eliminating Undertaker from the Royal Rumble fair and square. Why was Undertaker even mad? He expected people to bow down to him, let him win and not even attempt to throw him out? It was Hogan/Sid all over again but people hated Roman so much they still cheered Undertaker being a dick just like they did during his 2015 feud with Lesnar when he was also a sore loser over the streak ending (again, cleanly).

This might be a question for another thread, but is Undertaker/Shane and Undertaker/Roman the worst back to back Wrestlemania matches anyone ever had? Because I thought both were dreadful and among my least favorite matches of all time. Actually, Roman himself had 3 terrible ones in consecutive years from 2016-18.

For me i'm going Roman vs. Brock 34

the crowd felt like they were being held hostage... there was a general air of fine let's just get this over with... Roman will kick out of the F5 and beat Brock to finally get this whole song and dance f***ing over with.

instead Brock wins and we are still dealing with Roman and Brock as the only people that f***ing matter over 4 years later.

They're all really close in badness though. WM38's is up/down there too for letting down the build so greatly.

Roman/Brock in 2015 was great even before Seth came out.

The triple threat last year was great too.

Other than those two, I agree he has a poor record.

The Brock/Roman match at 31 was actually far better than anyone was predicting going in. They were telling a solid story of Roman being in over his head but not giving in. Even without Seth cashing in, it would have avoided this poll.

I went Reigns/Taker at Mania 33. None of the matches on here are barn burners (although I do like the Women's Triple Threat most), but Reigns/Taker had a weird build. Reigns hadn't yet found his footing, the push felt insanely artificial and Taker wasn't in shape. That combination just led to a disaster.

Also, I went back and looked at the match time - that thing was 22 minutes!!! There's no world in which a 52-year-old should be working a 22-minute match, especially one as broken down as Taker. Hogan/Rock went 16 mins. With the benefit of hindsight, I wonder if Taker/Reigns going 16 minutes in the semi-main and then Brock/Goldberg main-eventing with their crazy sprint would have been better received.

This might be another thread entirely, but I wonder what Roman's babyface trajectory would have been if they just let him straight up beat Brock at Mania 31. That crowd was rallying behind him at the end of that match. The problem with WWE is always follow-up, but I wonder if they actually completed the story of the underdog beating the favorite at Mania and then Roman slowly gaining confidence after that if it would have worked. The problem is most top babyfaces in WWE have to be superman.

I really want to say Brock / Roman at Mania 34 or Triple H / Roman at Mania 32, but at least they're, like, matches. Taker / Roman is just a dumpster fire on every possible level and an utterly meaningless match to boot. It's the equivalent of if Mania 24 had been main-evented by Batista vs. Umaga. ... Though in general I think Roman Reigns might have the single worst big match track record of any longterm main-eventer in history. It's not that he has no good matches but he has an exhaustive list of f***ing terrible ones.

Also the women's match was nowhere near as bad as the rest of those.

Roman Reigns vs. Undertaker was such a bummer that Undertaker kept coming back afterwards like I AIN'T GOING OUT LIKE THAT BROTHER until like this year.

Triple H vs Roman was an absolute bore but it could be Mania was going in for like 6 hours at that point.

To me it’s definitely between taker Vs Roman and Roman Vs Brock at WM34. I know taker and Roman was terrible in actual physical execution but I thought all around Roman Vs Brock was worse. And more insulting.

HHH/Orton: a classic HHH dud, all the elements here - goes on and bombs hard after a classic that everyone assumes must have been the actual main event in retrospect, terribly and incorrectly paced in the "HHH Grand Classic" style, HHH goes over in a spot where he had to know from his own WM2000 experience how much Orton should have won

HHH/Roman: Terrible, awful slog that goes almost a half hour (without the ridiculous entrance) at the end of a six hour show, again the exact opposite of what it should have been (Roman wrecking HHH) in an attempt to create that "Classic" that would make Roman and instead failed miserably so the next year they had to do...

Roman/Taker: Awful match where Taker is clearly cooked, plays to neither of their strengths, for an also-ran accolade with The Streak already done, possibly salvageable if they use the next night's reaction to turn Roman but they don't so yet another attempt to make Roman that fails so miserably that the next year they had to do...

Roman/Brock (34): the match where everyone was just begging them to get it over with and put Roman over already and they STILL didn't do it, Brock wins straight up and the show ends with a confused, vaguely sad Roman slowly walking up the aisle for an eternity in front of a baffled crowd, a match and main event so pointless that four years later in a final attempt to make Roman they had to do...

Roman/Brock (38): This just happened and I don't remember anything about it and they're already doing it again and it was a unification match that may or may not have unified the titles?

Roman/Undertaker is probably the worst actual match (though HHH/Orton and HHH/Roman are godawful in their own special ways) but I ended up voting for Roman/Brock at Wrestlemania 34, as it's ultimately the most pointless and essentially has been retconned out of existence while still being a capstone to a serious of increasingly bad decisions running year after year after year.

I"m not a fan of the way the women's 3 way was executed but it's still far above everything else on the list imo.
