PG has never been the issue with the quality of WWE's shows, nor was the rating the reason Attitude Era shows were fun.

The inherently limiting nature of the WWE style can make matches feel pretty homogenous compared to AEW, and there's a lot more of a focus on spectacle and flashiness (the huge LED boards and atrocious CGI entrance graphics). Plus there's Dunn's camerawork which, for better or (largely) for worse, has come to define WWE's TV.

Ok yea their camera work is annoying but I've kinda wondered this for awhile, if main roster WWE goes more toward what black and gold was...that puts WWE closer to what AEW's product is...then that makes AEW not an alternative anymore etc etc etc

Even with two comparable groups of wrestlers, you're never gonna get a crazy-ass spotfest like Death Triangle vs United Empire in WWE.

Are you sure, NXT was running matches like that and was basically a super indy for a long time.

Dude I used to watch NXT religiously, and even at their best (and NXT had some damn good matches) they were still much slower and more deliberately paced and produced then the average AEW match, especially with their tag matches. I remember Miro saying one of the things he had to get used to in AEW was the idea of different wrestling styles clashing, because he didn't have that in WWE - everybody there was sort of fitted into the same mold.

1991 was PG, right? That year had attempted murder, alive burial, man-on-woman violence, venomous snakebites galore, fireballs, etc, etc... 1991 shows would have had no rating at all. Ratings for television shows weren't officially introduced until 1997. That is true, but I would say the Rock nâ Wrestling era to that point, if we had to put a rating on it, would likely be TV-PG. And the late 80âs and early 90âs is still my favorite era of the WWF/E.

Doubt itâll make much difference. But it startled me somewhat that a lot of responses to this around the place was âGIMME BLOODâ. Like, insane bloodlust. reminds me of a crowd at one point literally with no irony chanting "We want blood" I remember that happening at Slamboree â94. Bobby - These people donât even know what country theyâre in! Tony - Wait, what do you think theyâre chanting? Bobby - Theyâre chanting âUSAâ arenât they? Tony - No, theyâre chanting WE WANT BLOOD! Bobby - Well of course, this is Philadelphia! Thatâs what the waitress said to me when she brought me my omelet this morning.

I think the WWE style where you need to deliberately limit your move set is pretty much done without Vince. The matches that have been taking place since Triple H took over show that. Theyâre still a little bit more deliberate with pacing than AEW, though. As to NXT not having crazy fast, spotfest matches, I think they had some North American ladder matches that were similar, plus the Gargano Takeover matches had that similar pace and energy that you get out of AEWâs big matches.

I'm hoping so. That was one of the biggest eye-opening moments for me when moving away from WWE; it's like "holy shit people can work different styles!" I miss the days when guys Angle were allowed to do actual grappling and shit; hopefully Trips is moving in that direction.
