Reminder apparently THIS is the interview that set off CM Punk against Hangman, re: CM Punk & Sting (which CM Punk actually mention on his tirade) Because of the way I was brought up, I actually empathize with Page a lot on this. It's not that I don't want to listen to other people, or be inspired by others. It's that I was very vehemently raised that you have to walk your own path, you can't copy someone else's work, you can't walk someone else's path, you can't follow someone else's example, you can't do things the same way someone else did them. I’m very much the opposite in that I try to listen to the past and believe there’s fundamentals there to hang on to and utilize for oneself in the future but even in saying that, when someone posted this clip initially (in the thread about Punk’s wack ass call out to Adam I think) my reaction was “I don’t necessarily agree with Hangman..but I can 100% respect that sentiment.” That, literally, is some Cowboy Shit. And to add to the millions of Phil’s double standards and hypocrisy’s, he shared that exact sentiment in his youth. He’d just be about a million times more aggressive and volatile with it. |

That Punk comment is so innocuous that he's bordering on that f***ing Road Dogg level of "the problem is you aren't listening to me and respecting my every word" and that's so far removed from punk that this dude may as well be The Captain and Tenille.

Somewhere buried in the sea of breaking news, I remember Sapp or Alvarez or someone phrasing the situation as something like "Punk wanted to be a locker room leader in AEW. Some people listened to him and some people didn't. This is what made him very angry."
A game of telephone got us to that description, but still, if it's remotely true, it's really notable. He was furious that only some of the other wrestlers looked up to him as a sage leader. If it wasn't complete and total adulation, he was surrounded by enemies.

And you have to remember, this is how Hangman has always learned. Yes, he was in NJPW and ROH but you're not walking around with Undertaker or Sting level veterans telling you this is how things go and you should listen He's never really been part of that "structure". If Sting has no problem with this, why do you Punk? If Hangman doesn't want or seek your advice Punk, look at it as his lose. But besides all that, he really said nothing wrong. He didn't disrespect anyone, he just says he likes to learn his way through trial and error. It has worked for him and you can only respect that Feels like he wants people to look at him like a Sting, Taker, Heyman level of respect where their opinion matter but he's not on that level. You should been happy for people to come to you as opposed to trying force it on them |

This honestly seems like Punk's ego has gotten out of control. In the AEW locker room he's not on the level of Sting or Jericho. I'd put Punk more on the level of Bryan or Christian honestly. He was a big name when the business wasn't that popular. It seems that he thinks he's on the Austin/Rock/Hogan level but he's just not that guy.
In fact I'd argue that Bryan is probably the biggest star in the entire company right now. I can see why he'd want guys to take his advice and give him respect. I'm not saying he shouldn't get respect but he's acting like he should be getting Taker/Hogan/Austin level respect and he's just never been at that level.

Kenny was also putting on 15-minute bangers on Dark with Joey Janela and Kip Sabian. And do we even need to open the hornet's nest of how long and how much offense he gave to Alan Angels in that match? The internet almost melted down at that. Omega is genuinely one of the best in the world. He has the attendance figures, merch sales, and match ratings (both in NJPW and AEW) to back that up. Of course, he's going to win matches and be at the top of any promotion he wrestles for. Those people never seen Flair & Bret as top guys give plenty to their opponents. Never hurt them a but. |
