I understand they are desperately trying to sell tickets, but doing this is pretty embarrassing for the second biggest company in the world
Best part that was not shown in that clip was the crowd chanting “Big Show” and Wight panicking trying to get them to stop lol!

It's not embarrassing to go to a wrestling show and advertise a deal to help sell tickets. It's something every wrestling company has done since the beginning of time.

As an older fan who was once described by a work colleague “if you get any more relaxed you’ll be horizontal” can I ask in this thread why people look into and “stress” (quotation marks as I don’t know if people actually do) about ticket sales? Especially when it comes to the big 2 companies? TK has said AEW are making great profits, so surely that’s all that matters right? I’m almost positive AEW wouldn’t run an arena if they were going to operate at a loss.

Sorry, but the second biggest company in the world shouldn't need to do this on a small promotions TV show.
This makes AEW look very minor league.

Not trying to shame them but this is not a good look for AEW.
This is a company with billionare backing it should not need to be going to small time promotions in order to move tickets.

As someone who lives in the Louisville area, this is abjectly ridiculous, I'm sorry. First of all, OVW has been a staple of the community for 30 years and the mayor of the city is literally a part owner. It makes sense to try use OVW to promote a wrestling show in the area, and, in the past, when WWE shows have been held at the YUM Center, WWE performers have appeared to promote the show, save for that brief period that OVW had a working agreement with Impact. Second of all, Big Show used to work for OVW for, like, a substantial period of time when it was WWE developmental. It makes sense for him to make an appearance and advertise the upcoming show. Third of all, OVW is experiencing a surge in popularity right now because of the Netflix show. It's mutually beneficial for AEW and OVW to cross-promote here. Big Show appearing got OVW a sellout, and AEW gets advertisement out of it. I fail to see how that's "embarrassing" or makes AEW look "minor league." AEW ain't perfect by any means, but some of the stuff it draws criticism for is insane.

Lots of people defending AEW's poor ticket sales, were laughing at WWE when they were struggling to sell tickets and were offering buy one get one free.
Whatever way people want to look at it, selling 2200 in an arena that could fit 15 thousand after stage setup is not good. Specially when this is their first time going to that city.
Likewise AEW making their debut in Memphis tomorrow and how poor the ticket sales are for that show
When you're now having to offer buy one, get one free every week, there is a problem.

It's definitely not normal. Things can't just be as they are...there has to be some saving grace excuse/explanation for everything. Tickets aren't selling so they had to do what they had to do even if it meant lowering themselves to do it...That makes sense and is clearly what is taking place. acting like it is normal for one company to send a representative to go on another companies show to hawk buy one get one free tickets doesn't.

It needs to be pointed out that Lexington and Louisville are as close to one another as the "Greater Atlanta Area" arenas that AEW promotes are to Atlanta, so this isn't the first time this market has been run, it's just the first time in the YUM Center. It also needs to be pointed out that WWE also hasn't ever even sniffed selling YUM out. RAW has, on average, done 5500-6000 over the years and the most recent SmackDown in August did around 8000 though no public number has been released. People act like Louisville is this hot pro wrestling market because Cornette is from here, but it's really not. Which is exactly why it makes sense to cross-promote with the local wrestling show, on its local TV, that most of the local wrestling fans watch. I'm not trying to be a mindless drone defending AEW at all costs, but we've revived this thread to completely ignore the fact that Full Gear has sold well and the last few AEW TV have been 4500+, and home in on AEW having the audacity to try and market its show in a lapsed wrestling market.

I don't get what the point of this thread is then if we're just going to beat a dead horse over and over. It's embarrassing that AEW is drawing X fans in Y city. They need to do lower ticket prices and lower promotion. But it's also embarrassing that they are actually going ahead and doing that with BOGO offers and promoting themselves in local markets where wrestling fans might see it (AKA wrestling shows). WWF and WCW constantly leaned on local promoters to help move tickets, especially in down times. This is just how the business works.

It seems like this thread is just going to lay dormant until it is bumped every couple of days to rip on AEW because there's a funny picture of the empty hard cam side on Twitter, or *checks notes* because it is advertising its show on local media.

Like how you get your rocks off about AEW promoting their show on OVW as "minor league" or "embarrassing" while ignoring a local saying that WWE does the same exact thing?

Im a big AEW fan I'm not here to troll or anything like that, I want the company to succeed.
But when they hire someone to the role of director of business development to help improve things, and then they suddenly start having major problems selling tickets, I think its worth talking about.
When it gets to the point when on some shows you can see masses of empty seats or the arena is in complete darkness, it doesn't look good on TV.
Jeff Jarrett has clearly done something wrong because they weren't having to offer buy one, get one free every week before he arrived.

It's not like WWE hasn't had issues in the past, all companies have issues.
When the company gets hot again and they start doing things this won't happen. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'd love to know the last time WWE sent one of their employees to appear in OVW or a small size promotion like that and on their TV show start telling people they are offering buy one, get one free when they visit 10 days later.
There's promoting, but doing something like this looks very desperate for a company with backing from a billionaire.

Ask Denny Zen is Cooking™ because he's the one who brought up this point and knows better about it than either of us.

I have never seen it myself either like this. Sure there are flyers and other things occasionally for upcoming shows but they don't even run the same venues as WWE and AEW so this argument is just weird. (Davis Arena for OVW)

Show me when WWE has went to OVW shows and advertised buy one get one tickets if they do the "same exact thing" Well, that's complicated by the fact that OVW was WWE developmental for a decade in the 2000s, so literally all of their shows were rife with WWE advertisement. For the early 2010s there was a working agreement with Impact, at a time when Impact was pretending that it could compete with WWE, so there was no WWE promotion on OVW shows. Also, actual readily available footage of OVW's TV show from over the years is sparse. But, I'm telling you as someone who has been to many shows at Davis Arena in the 15 years that I have lived in the Louisville Metro/Southern Indiana, WWE has never missed an opportunity to cross-promote its Louisville shows with OVW. I distinctly remember JBL showing up a time or two when he was still with WWE in the late 2000s to promote WWE's shows. His actual old "WWE Universe" blogs on WWE.com are mostly lost to time and I frankly don't care enough to use the Wayback Machine to track it down, but here's a contemporaneous article referencing JBL announcing his decision to "sponsor" OVW on WWE.com: www.wrestleview.com/misc-news/11061-more-details-on-jbl-sponsoring-ovw/?ampSo, sure, if we are going to split hairs to the atom, I can't say in good conscience that WWE has ever sent anyone to OVW TV to explicitly cut a promo and advertise BOGO ticket sales. That exact thing has probably never happened. And WWE is obviously not as inclined to enter into working agreements with indies as AEW is. But WWE has absolutely advertised its Louisville-area shows through OVW many times over the years. This is a really weird criticism. This entire thread up until today was "AEW needs to advertise its shows more in local markets." Now it's gasp, AEW is advertising its shows on a LOCAL wrestling show?!?!? How bush league!
