Velma has a lower IMDB rating than Manos: The Hands of Fate. Hell, it’s got a lower IMDB rating than The Red Ape Family (that unbelievably terrible cartoon which was made solely to sell NFTs). That makes sense since CryptoBros would have incentive for people to watch the show. So they attempt to hold the line against a torrent of backlash.
Velma doesn't really have that line of defense except for the handful of people who think Mindy Kaling is some sort of comedy genius working everyone.

Also helps that most people probably never heard of it. Hell, I only heard about Red Ape Family in passing on Dan Olson's "The Problem With NFTs" video essay. Velma is sort of a perfect target for review bombing: too non-white for the "anti-woke" crowd while also seemingly written to repel "woke" viewers, downright insulting to South Asian women (sadly, a pattern with Ms. Kaling, it seems), seems to have genuine disdain for adult cartoon fans, and it's just a very bad adaptation of an IP that almost every American has grown up with. It's a show practically designed to seek out the loudest corners of the internet and piss them all off in some way or another, and I think the extraordinary score reflects that.

And ultimately this will make it harder for any daring reinvention of Scooby Doo to get greenlit. There are so many potentially interesting directions a mature Scooby Doo series could go with the concept, but no, bad comedy trolling is the order of the day.
We need a batpoop insane live action series akin to Gotham or Riverdale.

Not seen it..
But I will say.. people are talking about this show. They have that going for it.
I was disappointed as many were when I heard Netflix axed Dead End: Paranormal Park.. but the thing is, and this is on Netflix, it barely got any buzz.. when I heard it was cancelled I expected it to trend on social media and be a big outrage.. there was some… but not much. Not as much as Warrior Nun.
So yeah, people are talking about this show.. so they have that.

This and that Banana Splits movie should serve as examples of how not to adulterize a kid's IP.
And this was the same company that gave us Space Ghost coast to coast, and Harvey Birdman attorney at law.

People still talking about the Dave Arquette title change so it must have been good. No such thing as bad publicity...only badly managed publicity.

Much like before a PPV where we Russoize the card we could have a try at Kalingizing a retro cartoon.
The Flintstones,
Wilma is an outspoken Latina feminist who is worried that increased temperatures are causing the dinosaurs to die out. Bedrock's mayor laughs at her suggestion so she decided to run for mayor. The mayor's son Barney is a white, trenchcoat & fedora wearing, redpilled incel who acts as the antagonist and tries to foil Wilma's plans. Wilma is so poorly written in test screenings all demos (including left leaning Hispanic women) feel that Barney is the more likable and relatable of the two.
Fred is race swapped to either Black or Sth Asian but given no personality other than a high school jock stereotype. His relationship with Wilma and friendship with Barney is never referred to. He has some embarrassing trait (a Tyson-inspired lisp?) that is used for cheap laughs.
Betty is the good-natured otaku Japanese exchange student who feels sorry for Barney san and tries to get him out of his cave but Barney is wary having watched too many Anvil Tate videos on YouTribe (a stone computer which has... let's say hedgehogs ferrying messages to and from the different computers, "its a living").

What if tomorrow, we don't talk about the new Velma episodes at all? Make ratings plummet. Then the show will get canceled, and become just a footnote in the history of the animation industry.
I know, I'm a f***ing genius.

Talking about it doesn't mean people are watching it. Talking about how bad the show is promotes it by getting people to watch it for themselves to see how bad it is.

I think you're grossly overestimating just how much influence an isolated message board discussion has on viewership numbers that actually mean anything.

Real question. Is this show worse than that potential live-action Powerpuff Girls show that they were going to do? I mean, the girls did look pretty good in those outfits.

The only positive review I've heard from this was the Guardian which gave it 4 out of 5.

I honestly don't get mad about it doing well. That's whatever to me. I'm sort of glad that the hatedom of this show has had some people go back to check out things like Mystery Inc. or some of the fun animated movies, though.
