4. R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned (2022) 5. Almost Heroes (1998)Found this on YouTube. This was Chris Farley's last movie before his death and released posthumously. In it he plays a boorish American frontiersman in 1804 leading a Lewis & Clark-esque expedition to the Pacific alongside a foppish and naive aristocrat played by Matthew Perry. This was a horrible movie and I can only assume it got made because the two leads really needed some drug money. It felt like nobody's heart was into this, and even Farley was phoning in his normal yelly, fat, clumsy man shtick. Not worth re-visiting in the slightest.

4. R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned (2022) 5. Almost Heroes (1998) 6. At the Earth's Core (1976)Another find on YouTube. This is pretty much based on the Edgar Rice Burrough's book of the same name. I've read it awhile ago and don't remember much about it, other then it felt like it was pretty much treading the same ground that ERB's other sci-fi novels did. So this movie stars Grand Moff Tarkin, the Mayor from Out of this World (!!!) and, our old friend from StarCrash, Caroline Munro, trading in her leather space bikini for furs. Two Victorian era scientists build a drilling machine to the inside of the Earth where they find a prehistoric civilization, complete with sexy cavegirls, ruled over by psychic pterodactyls. This was made in 1976 but it feels so much older. The effects are hit and miss. The backdrops, purple lighting and prehistoric jungle scenery do a decent job giving the environment an extra-worldly feel, and I actually really like how they the lava and fire effects. The creatures, that apparently the production crew were really proud of, are for the most part really bad though with one exception where they did a great job making a giant four-legged rhino looking thing movements look really organic. Peter Cushing steals every scene he's in and 70's Caroline Munro is always a pleasure to look at, but otherwise the story was pretty boring and the action scenes difficult to follow.

Repeated viewing: Titanic (1997)
I know I watched this movie at the start of the year (literally, because it Jan. 1) but I was tempted to watch it again not long after that. When my cousin told me that this movie was being brought back to theaters, I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I didn't see it in theaters when it was all the rage back in the first-half of 1998. Hell, when I saw it last month, it was the first time I saw it all the way through, not counting times I saw bits and pieces on TV.
With all of that being said, I am glad that I saw it on the big screen. I also watched it in 3D. I recall that it was brought back to theaters in 2012, and there were other moments when it was brought back but just didn't take the chance. Watching it this way was worth it. Watching it in 3D was an interesting experience, especially with some of the effects involving things in the foreground popping out. James Cameron knew what he was doing for the 3D, I will tell you that.

6. At the Earth's Core (1976) 7. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)Finally getting around to watching this on Disney+. My opinion of it hasn't changed any since I saw it in the theaters last year - a good movie that's way too long. Also, what's the deal with the guy with the lip thing? I mean, I really want to be respectful of other cultures, but that thing's just creepy looking.

7. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Not the worst Marvel movie but not even close to the best. Yet another example of a film that would have been improved by trimming 30-45 minutes out of it. The story was okay but it really dragged in places. And it left a bunch of unanswered questions at the end but I’m not sure that I care enough to watch another movie to get answers for them.

13. Poseidon (2006) - Watched this on DVD. After watching "Titanic" again recently (in theaters, no less), I had been in the mood for other disaster movies, especially some involving a large ship. I also remember seeing TV spots for this back in 2006 and it looked...interesting to me. Since I requested it from the library, along with "The Poseidon Adventure," I just went ahead and watched it.
This movie is...okay. I would call it average. Why? Because while the visual effects were good for its time, some of them don't look good by today's standards. This movie clearly feels like something from the mid-2000s. You had Josh Lucas as one of the leads, in yet another financial flop (the previous being 2005's "Stealth," which wasn't that good). Other vibes were some songs from the soundtrack. Now I don't mind that Fergie was in this movie as a singer as she provided songs for the soundtrack. Rather that than be one of the main characters. The movie is short. It's roughly 90 minutes, which is surprising. I mean, seriously, though some people dismissed this movie as a Titanic rip-off when the trailers came out, not knowing that this is an adaptation of a novel. I will admit that some of the scenes were intense, suspenseful, and on top of that, this film pulled no punches with the death toll early in the film.
As dodgy as the visual effects are by today's standards, there were some bits that the effects looked pretty bad. I wonder how bad they looked back in 2006, or maybe they were considered good. For a film like this, those visual effects kind of worked.
However, some of the problems it had was lack of characterization. With this movie being short, some of the characters weren't given enough time to develop. I heard that "The Poseidon Adventure" had some development in the characters in that version. I will also say that I didn't like how a couple of major characters were killed off. Maybe it was to show how intense the situation was, and I know that in movies like this, there is often at least one or two casualties in the group of major characters, but still. It wouldn't have been an issue if those characters survived the events.
Overall, I would call this an average time-waster. Would I call it great? No. Would I call it good? Not really. But I had fun and it's not a bad way to kill an hour and a half.

I feel like I enjoy this less each time around which is a shame since the original three are timeless and the greatest trilogy ever. This one is visually stunning and the Woody story is touching but some of the new characters don't work, the adventure isn't as fun, and it just isn't needed. [***½]

14. The Perfect Storm - Watched this on Blu Ray. Watching "Poseidon" drew me to watching this. Because I had gotten this from the library, I was torn between watching the 1972 "Poseidon Adventure" and this film. I went with this. Oddly enough, with this film being directed by Wolfgang Petersen, who also directed "Poseidon," I decided to watch "The Perfect Storm."
I recall this being a hit back in 2000. It was shot on a $120 million budget, which even for late-1990s standards (it was likely filmed in 1998 or 1999) was rather high. You also had star power in Mark Wahlberg and George Clooney. I had also heard that this was based on not just a book, but also on real-life events. Now I might read the book sometime down the road, but knowing that this was based on something that really happened, I figured what would happen. With that being said, this film does deliver on the suspense and action.
For a disaster movie, it's actually fun. Yes, I can tell that a lot of the sequences with the rogue waves and the boats at sea were CGI, but a lot of the weather and water effects worked, especially when it cut to the perspectives of some characters. Speaking of which, it was interesting to see that there wasn't only focus on the main characters, the fisherman. There was also some focus on the coast guard, as well as other people who were out sailing the Atlantic during a major storm.
I noticed that the Blu Ray has three different commentary tracks. One day I might check them out. Don't know how soon, especially since the copy isn't mine, but I would like to gain some insight from the director, the people involved with the visual effects, and the author to see how accurate to his book the film was. Until then, I would say that this was a decent disaster film.

#2 Strange World - I thought it was a fun family-friendly sci fi adventure. Very pretty, nothing groundbreaking storywise, but a good way to spend part of an afternoon. #3 How to Train Your Dragon - This was a re-watch to share it with my son, who has been nuts about dragons lately. He's almost 6, and it was absolutely a hit with him. I forgot just how good it was. Positive I'm forgetting a few movies but here's what we watched this weekend #4 - Trolls - Fell asleep, but what little I did stay conscious to watch did not enthrall me. Definitely was just a watch for my kid. My wife did stay awake, and said it was ok. #5 - Raya and the Last Dragon - Tried, but didn't watch. The people turning to stone scene sent my son screaming in terror out of the room. I think he would have liked it otherwise #5 - Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) - Stopped Raya, put on this. My son wanted to watch this after we watched the trailer. He loves watching trailers. Here it is in all its glory.... It was a fun adventure. A bit dry, but if you like sci fi and fantasy from this era I think you know what to expect. Special effects were certainly a product of their time! Only questionable material was plenty of "A woman on MY expedition?!" casual sexism from the Professor, but he is framed as a bit curmudgeonly and the woman it is directed at frequently proves him wrong. We've had a few talks with my son the subject, since it is inescapable in older media. The only other negative is I'm pretty sure they killed a lizard for one or two of the sequences.
