Its kind of remarkable to go back and see just milquetoast certain older YouTuber scandals are in comparison to the stuff today.
I mean Chris Bores is a lazy hack, but the Irate Gamer controversies are almost quaint in hindsight.

I mean Chris Bores is a lazy hack, but the Irate Gamer controversies are almost quaint in hindsight. Different age, I suppose. He's been around forever, but at the his nonsense happened the social media landscape wasn't quite the same. I suppose it also helped that he wasn't super established before it all came out. So a YouTube video of Colleen performing Single Ladies in blackface has resurfaced. It's an unlisted video that you had to use a QR code to access from her book. Yoooooo, she thought this was OK in 2018. Blackface is the OG bad decision that never goes out of style. At this point I'm more surprised when a YouTuber working the apology circuit doesn't have some casual racism on their channel somewhere. |

Eight pages in, and nobody has mentioned Adipose Rex himself, Bob Chipman (aka. MovieBob). Among other things, his utterly toxic Twitter account where he has said stuff so viciously hateful towards anyone tho doesn’t vote or act exactly like him, unable to take any criticism from anyone unless it’s a person who is politically on his side, since he seems like he desperately wants to be loved by his fellow far lefties and be seen as “one of the good ones.” Being woke to the point of parody yet also saying some very sleazy stuff, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. His Patreon has lost almost half of its monthly revenue and bleeds money every month, and Lindsay Ellis had to tell him to back off when he kept trying to make it seem like the two of them were friends. So... the Anti-Thinker was the best version all along...? (I just remember his Game Overthinker stuff and the miriad of characters he had in that for sketches. Then he tried to change his content and I what little I watched from him dissipated) |

Why does the name Lindsay Ellis constantly come up? Because she made the mistake of not being 100% perfect at all times and some bad actors with too much time on their hands lept at the molehills and made mountains of them. I think that's letting her off the hook for some seriously stupid shit she did, but in the grand scheme of things, it shouldn't have been as big a deal. I think a big for her was being a visible target due to the ChangetheChannel association, given people like Colleen were skating by unnoticed for doing many times worse shit. The level of scrutiny she's been subjected to in the past is, of course, bullshit, but she also unfortunately was a textbook demonstration of "DO NOT 'Just Post Through It', TAKE A BREATHER AND THEN RESPOND TO CRITICISM!" No one can, or should, try to bat away a dogpile as it's happening, because that's when you tell everyone, "Please, lash out at me, it will give you all the free attention you could ever dream of", all while she made herself look like a complete fool. She's obviously smart, but everyone has an unwise side, and it was definitely on full display when she was in the heat of the moment. |

Good things happened on Twitter, like friendships getting made, collaborations being made easier, etc, but accessibility does make certain personality types bring the absolute worst out of themselves, same with people who send creeper messages on Instagram. |

Yeah, not that it'd have ever been a good look, exactly, but especially not by then. This wasn't like "but it's okay if you don't do a 'hard R'-era of internet comedy, cursed as that was. By 2018, this was definitely when guys like Shane, Pewdiepie, and other significant youtubers were already getting criticism for a lot of this shit. There's no way Colleen wouldn't have been aware of that shift. |

From my understanding of things, a copyright claim can be filed regardless of length, right? Which leads me to believe monetization was the goal in the first place. In any case, DMCAing commentary videos is a bad look. Not as bad as, you know, the thing she's accused of, but certainly not helpful. She knows she's in the shit--she's cancelled upcoming dates and killed her podcast pretty recently--so one would think she'd avoid drawing any more attention to herself through this petty nonsense. |
