Woof, didn't even crack the top 5 it's opening weekend. Barely made 12 million worldwide
Shall we start the DreamWorks is dead and buried alarm.

Kind of a perfect storm of factors for this one flopping I think. Coming out at a time when another mermaid movie is still holding quite well domestically and is one of the biggest draws of the year, there are two other animated movies both holding very well weeks after their releases (yes Elemental flopped too, but it's been having pretty good legs in subsequent weeks at least), the trailers made it look extremely generic, there hasn't really been a lot of marketing for it... It's just never really had a lot going for it.

I didn't know they were making a sequel to Turning Red...oh wait.
Yeah, that's the first thing I thought, Dreamworks' attempt at a puberty allegory.
Also, being a devout Pirates fan, I can't get behind a kraken as a hero.

Not really, unlike Pixar this isn't the latest flop in a series of flops as DW's last two movies (Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys were both pretty successful) Now if Trolls 3 bombs later this year then they can panic.

It really is amazing what an utter bloodbath of a summer movie season it's been. Spider-Verse is the only unambiguous winner so far, then you've got Little Mermaid and Transformers in the, "Eh, they did fine," camp then after that it's flop after flop after flop.

Yeah, summer's when the movie season does it's best numbers but this has been a disaster.
Little Mermaid looks to break even and may score a minor profit

Its telling just how upside down this year is when so many traditionally safe movies are doing at best eh or outright flopping, while the two biggest films are the year are likely going to be a video game adaptation and an animated sequel to what was the lowest grossing Spider-Man release.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is about the only major film that did about as well as expected. Everything else has been crap shoot of unpredictability either way in both directions.

It also is extremely telling about how much Hollywood needs to get its shit together with properly budgeting movies that Fast X and Little Mermaid are respectively the third and fifth highest grossing movies of the year and the former lost a ton of money while the latter's had to limp to break even.

Disney alone has spent over a billion with their last four movies the past three months, and only GOTG thus far has turned a profit, they really need to stop throwing money around.

It's like, Box Office Ranks are: Amazing: Spiderverse Better: Little Mermaid, Transformers Middling Tier: Elemental, The Boogeyman Absolute Disaster: The Flash, Ruby Gillman It's been so bad that films like Guardians 3 and Fast X have been top 10 draws in this month still. Kinda glad Nimona released on Netflix cause I heard it did very good...

the aftermath of C***D is still damaging, but more is that movies are still releasing on digital early ... THAT has to stop now, and let movies *ahem* breathe again ...
indy has to have at least three months before that

I just don't see most movies being worth the expense of seeing it in theaters. I saw Across the Spider-Verse in theaters and it was a great time and a great movie. But most other things released so far aren't anything I feel like I *need* to see in theaters. I dunno, make better movies or make the movie theater experience cheaper, but it's a fairly mid showing so far this year for the most part.

Western animation just seems to have given up.
Puss in Boots was great--no question. But before that, it was just a row of mediocrity or outright shit.

All that being said, I would not be even remotely surprised if Barbie ends up being huge when it comes out this month. That one's done a really good job of building genuine hype.
