Train have ludicrously bad lyrics. That's not a hot take, I guess, though, in that I've seen people who are fans admit some of the songs are pure gibberish.

The Gin Blossoms are so underrated. Miserable New Experience is one of the best alternative rock albums of the early 90s. right up there with Nevermind, Ten, Dirt, Superunknown, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and Loveless.

This one's more of a question than a take : Is it OK to like an artist's solo work if you don't like the group they're best known for? I should think so. I like Paul McCartney and Wings much more than the Beatles. Also prefer Phil Collins' solo work to Genesis (I do like Genesis though) Peter Gabriel's solo stuff >>> Phil Collins' solo stuff > Genesis

Alan Parsons’ musical range and influence throughout pop history is secretly kind of ridiculous.

The way they fired her should have killed that f***ing band dead! (Didn't they record the f***ing Show after which they told her to leave?) EDIT: He fired the second Vocalist for being pregnant? How the hell is this Band still a thing? I think the reason is basically like Journey's ultimatum to Steve Perry that got him to quit when he had health issues, where it was less that she got pregnant and more that they were desperate to tour to make their money and went about it in a really callous-seeming way. I do agree that they come off really bad with both of these firings, though, and I think they at least have admitted firing Tarja publicly was dickish and unnecessary. Apparently, the bassist of the time who has also left Nightwish since then has apologized to her in person, but none of the others have, though she has at least said she wouldn't rule out a further reconciliation and maybe reuniting someday. She also wrote the songwriter when his father died and that apparently helped cool things off a bit. The Bandleader is worth 10 Million. I'm sure he would have been fine. That is just....Ah f*** that guy.

I also know apparently the band were basically all partiers at that time except for Tarja, so there was a disconnect, too, where they were all in the same band but it led to a faction mentality. Even if I am sure it'd have broken up eventually, it could have and should have been a civil thing and not public like that.

- the Loudness War is something only total dweebs notice of care about.
- Dave Mustaine was ALWAYS an utter pillock. He just has a platform to broadcast it now. See also Billy Corgan.
- I don't think it's possible for heavy metal to get any heavier. Between Anaal Nathrakh, Infant Annihilator and bands like Imperial Triumphant I just think it's pointless to try and outdo that. Best way for the genre to expand is to explore more dynamics (which two of the three aforementioned bands are already doing, thankfully).
- Mark Kozelek's slow descent into grumpy, thin skinned old man has been as hilarious as it is sad.

Not a hot take, but I think one of the more interesting what ifs? about recent music is if Kurt Cobain never died. Dave Grohl was working on Foo Fighters stuff when he was very much still in Nirvana and Kurt even heard some of his early demos (which he liked a lot). Would the Foos have ever blown up like they did? Would Nirvana break up or find a new drummer or would Dave have tried to make him being in both bands work? Would music snobs complain about Kurt selling out when he puts out a folksy Christmas album available exclusively at Starbucks? I've had a think about this before, actually. My best guess is that a fourth Nirvana record would have been pure pop - I think there exists a Nirvana demo of "Big Me", for example - but that Cobain would have either got too deep into smack or burnt out, split the band up and disappeared by 1996 or 1997 like Layne Staley and Evan Dando, possibly reemerging in the 2000s.

I love topics like this. It was actually what made me create an account.
Ice Cube's 1988-1992 (Straight Outta Compton, AMW, Death Certificate and Predator) is one of the greatest four-album runs in music history, regardless of genre.
RJ Payne is a killer on the mic and is the best rapper regularly dropping music today.
The Dead Boys and New York Dolls were better than the Ramones and the Sex Pistols.
"Let it Be (Naked)" is the best Beatles album.

The Gin Blossoms are so underrated. Agreed. I've seen them twice, most recently last Summer and they are a terrific live show

I had the chance to see him live once when I was on vacation and decided I’d rather get more sleep. I know I've already mentioned it in this thread, but I'm genuinely happy to see that there are people who find Prince as inherently dull as I do. Like, he had all the talent in the world, played 40-something instruments, and wrote more hits for people than we'll ever know (he used an extensive list of aliases to write for other artists)....but somehow his own music was always just so damn boring. The musical equivalent of plain white walls.

Elvis Costello's songs are good, but his voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Instant channel changer.

Be here now by Oasis really isn't as bad an album as people make it out to be. This isn't really a hot take any more. A lot of people have defended it in later years. Anyway... The Smashing Pumpkins became less interesting once Billy Corgan brought James Iha back and embraced the nostalgia a little more.

The Gin Blossoms are so underrated. I hate that they get backlash for kicking out Doug Hopkins. He was gonna drag the band down with him and his addiction. EDIT: Not really a hot take but if Layne had his **** together Alice in Chains would be at Nirvana level of reverence. They're still up there but I think Laynes addiction problems dragged the bands reputation down.
