Mario, Geno and Toadstool were the go to team for most Geno hit almost as strong as Bowser and better magic user while Toadstool was a better healer than Mallow. Mallow has a pretty solid place in the end game if you know which enemies are weak to Lightning and Ice. In the Smithy fight, you can use Shocker to absolutely wreck the Smelter in a couple turns, and then when you hit the second phase of the fight, you can make Smithy absolutely bleed HP when he changes into the Tank head, and you have Snowy for when he retreats to the Mask Head. I think the big issue Mallow runs into is that for the most part the other characters can hit hard enough that it isn't really worth the time slotting him in and out for the fights he specifically excels at. He's worth swapping in for Yaridovich and the Czar Dragon but otherwise he's kind of superfluous after you get Peach.

Random thought: Any chance they'll cross promote and put Mallow and Geno in Mario Kart 8?

Random thought: Any chance they'll cross promote and put Mallow and Geno in Mario Kart 8? It’s crossed my mind but rather doubt it, they said at the time that it’d be returning characters and spotlighted what games each of them is from when they showed off the new batch. That said doing the two of them and some kind of Mario RPG-based track would be incredible. And probably do a ton to advertise the game.

With a Mario, Mallow, and Geno party, I can pretty much wreck most bosses before healing becomes much of a concern, and when I do need to heal, items will do nicely.

My memory of this game as a kid was renting it and immediately hating it because it was an RPG (not knowing what that meant at the time). It was kind of like getting Mario Is Missing and being excited about playing as Luigi trying to find Mario across the world. I remember the Bowser chandelier fight early on and aimlessly walking around some grassy area. Yet, despite not being into this sort of thing, I'm really happy to see it get another chance. I know this game has a fairly large cult following that is very excited for it, and it looks gorgeous and seems faithful to the original. This was an excellent choice to remake due to the original pre-rendered look not aging as gracefully as other SNES games (though I always loved the art style of it). It would be my dream to see the DKC trilogy given the same treatment.

Yeah, I mean unless you're doing a low level challenge, you wouldn't need to bother with either Bowser or Toadstool. If you're collecting things like the Safety Ring, Quartz Charm, Lazy Shell and Super Suit, it should a pretty straightforward run. Nothing against Bowser and Toadstool, but this is Mallow and Geno's only outing, and for that, they get the nod.

I've never gotten around to getting a Switch (I lost interest in video games in my 20s after my dad passed on, and things were too tight financially for awhile to get back into it) but this has me putting it higher on my list of things to get because I loved this game so much, lol.

Luigi was actually planned to be in the original, as he would've appeared at a Banquet in Nimbus Land.

I'm kind of happy that Luigi wasn't in the game. To me, part of the charm of games like Mario RPG is not heavily relying on the Mario universe too much. At the time, while it was fun to play as both Toadstool and Bowser, honestly if I could, I would have been okay with two newly created characters.
And besides, Luigi is in the game *technically*. Not only does he appear in the parade credits, but his wish appears in Star Hill, and he's the guide in the game's manual.

It would be cribbing from Thousand Year Door, but I'd love to see the implication that Luigi was off having his own adventures with people/creatures from the Mario RPG setting; like there's NPC's that talk about seeing Luigi running around with a Moleville explorer, a shark pirate, a would be Snifit, Chained Kong, & Mukumuku.

It would be cool if you got a secondary quest like in LOZ, except you play as Luigi (with no appearance from Mario). He's joined on his journey by Wollam, Chango, Tatanga and Daisy. They team up to take down the evil Forger!

They kind of love cribbing from Thousand-Year Door without directly acknowledging it in Mario RPGs anyway - the paper abilities in Paper Jam, the stage section of Origami King and its audience mechanic, the layout of Rogueport pretty much being lifted wholesale for Color Splash - so that would track.

As a lifelong Luigi fan, it annoys me when he gets disrespected and cast to the side. Not enough to dislike the game, but still. He's the better brother. Mario just has the machine behind him. Poor Luigi gets the shaft too often.

There was kind of this dead period from Super Mario World to Luigi's Mansion where they really just didn't seem to know what to do with Luigi. Paper Mario at least fleshes him out and gives him some funny moments but in between you have him just being a cameo in Super Mario RPG, being a damsel in Yoshi's Island, completely sitting out Super Mario 64, him being the filler-for-whoever-you're-playing-as character in Mario Party 3's story mode, his board in Mario Party 1 being an engine room for some reason since there was nothing established about the character at the time...

Poor Luigi gets the shaft too often. Nah, I like Luigi, but Mario is far more well rounded. It almost felt like cheating by using either him or Toadstool playing SMB2. I actually thought they were going to take the brothers in different roles when the GameCube came out. Luigi did his thing as a ghost catcher, while Mario was cleaning up island muck. Too bad they've gone back to being rigid with the main Mario franchise again. You could say the same thing about Donkey Kong after Donkey Kong 64. He just became this party character, or they had him as a lame final boss in Punch Out Wii. I would actually prefer if Donkey Kong was left entirely out of the Mario games. Yes, I know they're intertwined since the original game, but DK proved himself in his own spinoff series. Let him stay there. Replace him with Tatanga or Wart if you need someone.

Given the preorder sales of this game and how people are hyped for it, I'm really thinking this is going to force them to do a sequel. People are very hyped for it.

But I could see why they'd want to avoid the look of Mac punching the Princess....
