Definitely feeling for their families right now. Absolute tragedy. Honestly, as morbid as it sounds, it makes me feel better that they weren't stuck in the submersible for days with little oxygen, food, or water. It imploding was way more merciful in the end I'd think.
The CEO of the company needs to be dragged through so many wrongful death suits now. Absolute deplorable how unsafe the whole thing was.

Wasn't the CEO in the sub? Though I guess they can sue his estate or just the company in general.
One of the more bizarre side characters in this whole story is the stepson of one of the passengers who went to a Blink-182 concert like hours after hearing about the submersible going MIA.

To be completely honest, for as long as it's been a given degree of "easier" to go to the Titanic in the same sort of way that it's "easier" to go climb Mt Everest, I'm surprised that, as far as I know, this is the first time something like this has happened with a commercial submersible.
I think I'm just thinking of all the other famous shipwrecks that are at SCUBA depths and how many divers have died on the likes of the Andrea Doria or Empress of Ireland.

And, of course, the "go woke, go broke" crowd have proven there's no depths they won't sink to (I tried to avoid the pun) to push their agenda and seized upon a video where the CEO talked about not hiring "50 year-old white guys" because it's "not inspirational." Or – and just hear me out on this – maybe it was because the 50 year-old white guys were telling the CEO his janky submersible was a death trap? Sadly I am not surprised....as like any tragedy, any occasion even, is cause for people to snipe at each other. And it's been like that for some time now. My heart goes out to the victims and the people that loved them.

This submersible was shoddy at best. I’ve seen at least two other people that tried to do this ride say that their voyages were delayed due to electrical and other issues with one guy opting not to go at all and the other trip being called off before they hit depth. If I were a billionaire and wanted to take a submarine to see the Titanic I wouldn’t ride on that piece of shit. Could probably make a nice donation and get a ride on a real military submarine. One where you could stand up, there’s a bathroom and food, and you know that it is going to hold up to the rigors of the ocean. RIP to the victims though. Military submarines don't have windows though. A, uh, passenger sub that can hit the kind of depths OceanGate was going for would have enormous commercial potential. Unfortunate that it sounds like they basically shoved people into their first draft and started operations.

I suspect that's probably because 99.99% of extreme depth commercial dive operators don't cut corners with such reckless abandon as Oceangate did. Making a craft that's capable of withstanding the tens of thousands of pounds of pressure and keeping it maintained is surprisingly easy, it's just expensive. As has been reported, until this week there were ten commercial submersibles in the world operating at Titanic depth and below. Nine of them were certified by regulatory bodies as being safe to do so. No prizes for guessing which one wasn't.

I’m afraid I have been laughing. Because this brings back childhood memories: My brother went through a phase wee he was obsessed with the Titanic, particularly with how the wreckage was discovered. For two or three years in a row for Halloween he dressed as the Alvin, the submersible that discovered the remains. He literally just painted a cardboard box white and write “Alvin” on the side of it. When people assumed he meant he was going to be Alvin of Alvin snd the Chipmunks, or they couldn’t figure out what the hell he was supposed to be, he’d get so upset. One time mom took us to her office to show our costumes off-and he couldn’t get through the door. Everyone had to huddle in a window to look at him out on the street.
So yeah this has been a source of morbid amusement.

We're definitely going to see how well their "This is an uncertified experimental craft, it might kill you" waiver holds up in court. Hopefully the CEO’s blatant disregard to safety standards, which was caught on camera no less, completely nullifies the waiver. There’s a difference in say dying in something that while risky upholds all the safety standards possible, meaning the risk was on the person who signed the waiver, vs dying in something that intentionally zigged where all the safety rules said to zag, simply because the creator “liked to break rules”. In the latter the risk should be on the builder because the waiver signee didn’t know just how compromised the vehicle was.

Those waivers don’t even really hold up for gyms or martial arts training if you have a halfway decent lawyer, there’s no chance of it being a factor here.

I feel really bad about the 19 year old who (very understandably) was scared as hell and didn't want to do this, but got coaxed into doing it by his father.

I feel bad for the 19-year-old. Your dad invites/drags you on to this exploration with everything completely out of your control and then this happens.
In terms of their deaths, it looks like it was really a (for lack of a better term) a best case scenario in the sense that they died instantly at the moment the submarine lost feed. Imploded, crushed instantly - it's overwhelmingly likely that they didn't know that they died, as opposed to the slowly submerging further into the depth with no connection to the outside world trapped in a close-quarters coffin for days as they grew hungry in pitch blackness with the oxygen slowly running out that the media ran with as a possibility had they been in a position to be rescued.
But yes, a tragedy. I think the anti-billionaire sentiment is exacerbated here in the states by the disproportionate coverage compared to the boat of refugees near Greece that capsized this week that's seen hundreds of lives lost. It's possible to hold space in your heart for both, but these were people fleeing for their lives from a warzone only to drown in a horrifying way with Greece's own rescue efforts being woefully negligent and their current weak attempts to cover it up.

This is what happens when safety protocols are disregarded. I feel awful for those who lost their lives, and for the families who've lost their loved ones. Also, the lack of empathy from people is disturbing.
