At least it was a quick way to go 😔 Yeah, that's really the one tiny crumb of comfort. Spoilering due to graphic details: {Spoiler}

At least it was a quick way to go 😔 Yeah, that's really the one tiny crumb of comfort. (spoilered graphic details) Extreme overpressure really is the gift that keeps on giving in an incredibly morbid sort of way. Your spoilers remind me of a similarly detailed explanation (with lots of G-force calculations) of exactly what happens to a T-72/T-80 type tank crew with a full ammo rack explosion.

The best I can say is that the estimated 30 milliseconds before they went from fine to "a fine mist" is a lot better than them having been stuck under water slowly running out of air for 72 hours.

Definitely feeling for their families right now. Absolute tragedy. Honestly, as morbid as it sounds, it makes me feel better that they weren't stuck in the submersible for days with little oxygen, food, or water. It imploding was way more merciful in the end I'd think. The CEO of the company needs to be dragged through so many wrongful death suits now. Absolute deplorable how unsafe the whole thing was. The CEO's f***ing dead so I don't know how that's working

Other lesser known safety cock ups include manning a previous mission with one of the motors accidentally installed backwards so that instead of shifting forward they just spun, and apparently having a habit of not doing up the top bolt on the ring of bolts because "it's hard to reach" and "17 bolts are mathematically no different from 18"
We don't know if all 18 were bolted on this dive.

My two biggest phobias are claustrophobia and thalassophobia, so I tend to get morbidly hyperfixated on submarine/pressure vessel disasters when they happen. The Byford Dolphin accident is another such horror situation.

This just reeks of “I’m rich, so nothing negative could possibly happen to me”

I know a lot of people keep dunking on the controller, but honestly I get using a game controller, it's an interface generations have gotten used to. Hell, the US Military pilots drones with Xbox controllers because the pilots grew up using them to pilot aircraft in games. What I can complain about is the WIRELESS off brand controller. Even wired would have been fine. Relying on a battery and a Bluetooth signal when you don't have a backup is madness when there are patently better options.

If you live in a big city where rent has exploded, there is a real anti-billionaire sentiment. People making $70-80k/year and still only barely affording rent has left many angry at the system, and have just lost all sympathy for for billionaires who escape to tax havens, like three of the passengers on that ship. I also don't think many were impressed that taxpayer money went into paying for the rescue of people who have skirted these regulations, and did not even bother to get this program regulated by either the Canadian or US government, despite operating on their shores. Not wishing death on anyone, but explaining why people feel this way I understand the "f*** billionaires" sentiment, even if I don't agree with making fun of people dying, but what I'm talking about is different. It's "anti-woke" types who are rich themselves and worship at the altar of Musk banging the drum because it serves their narrative. I mean, they have to. Because pretty much everything that actually led to the implosion is emblematic of the way they want the entire world to be. Maverick rich people skirting regulation is supposed to lead to technoparadise!

I mean, that seems to sum up literally everything about the design of the Titan. Let's build it from carbon fibre, a material that gets progressively more brittle the longer it is exposed to cold temperatures! Let's use a porthole only certified for use at depths of 1,300 metres and take it down to a little under triple that depth! Let's construct the ballast from leftover construction pipes! Who needs a navigation system, acoustic beacons or any kind of communication system? Sending text messages back and forth should cover that, right? But again, we're talking about a craft designed and built by a man who said the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 "needlessly prioritises passenger safety over commercial innovation."

Every other submersible of this type has been solid steel or titanium for a reason, and until Sunday the vessel type had a perfect safety record for that same reason. Apparently Richard Branson talked with James Cameron about possibly making a similar carbon fibre pod a while back and he got told "this will definitely kill someone" so he didn't do it.

There's three things I trust James Cameron implicitly to know how to do: being a colossal asshole, making money at the box office, and making a flawless deep sea exploration vehicle.

Speaking of Cameron.
That's uncharacteristically diplomatic of him, and you know that his private thoughts on the matter are a lot more blunt.

That quote from Jurassic Park is more correct in these circumstances: they were preoccupied with whether or not they could, they did not stop to think if they should.
It’s not dinosaurs, but this is the real life version of this story.
Additionally, it’s not only the scientific circumstances that made me question this project, but the moral. 1,500 people lost their lives and have had their final resting place on that wreck. Unlike Gettysburg or Arlington that cares about respect, these tourist expeditions to Titanic focused on profits.
I hurt for the families of the lost, but this should have never happened for many reasons

Reading more into this, all the comments about safety from Mr. Rush just absolutely reek of techbro "cavalier innovator entrepreneur" punchable smugness.
The only one involved who seems like they should've known better was the ex French navy commander Mr. Nargeolet, who I suspect was along for the ride to try to keep the rest of them from f***ing up the wreck site more than anything else.
