“…And while the first two openly gay professional wrestlers committing themselves to one another both in life and in career should have been a time of celebration, it was dampened by the actions of literally thousands of *clears throat* straight white women who, outraged and frankly baffled at such an inconceivable notion as two adult men finding love together, took to loudly mocking the couple at every event that they performed at with calls of “Golden Lovers”, an obvious attempt at shaming the two gay men for their real world love of giving and receiving golden showers.” You missed the "(not hating!)" after the misogyny. James Somerton took the powerbomb from Hbomberguy, then Todd hit the shooting star press. I too, kind of wished that he'd done the wrestling video, it would have been horrible. He doesn't seem like a wrestling fan, so he'd have been super condescending... and think of all the trash he could make up, or wrestle sleaze rumours he'd believe 100%. People who aren't into pro wrestling discussing pro wrestling ALWAYS ends well and makes for some thoughtful analysis!

What is about being a Youtuber that attracts so many of these amoral dipshits? I think it's less being a YouTuber and more the evolution of the platform into a "content mill", at least for those looking to profit directly from uploading to the site rather than getting money via things like Patreon. Once the platform incentivizes people to upload as much "content" as possible, quality be damned, the people with the fewest scruples start reading into what will generate the most revenue and just hop on board whatever the new hotness is on that front, e.g. the people in this video who wanted to become video essayists once that became an attractive option but didn't want to do the actual work of, y'know, writing/researching for their own essays and just stole from others, instead. Basically, it's like most other things: once the focus goes from "sharing your creations" to, again, "generating content", it really attracts the assholes and the carnies.

Again, I have no knowlegde of Somerton outside of HBomberguy's video and the following reactions but judging by what I've seen from those, he seems like the sort of guy who's decided that being gay is all the qualifications he needs to discuss and educate people on queer history and culture, not realizing that doing so requires, you know, being knowledgeable about history and actually being cultured. But that's okay because plagiarizing people who do know about this stuff is the same thing, right?

Some of which was harmless bollocks that was thrown around a lot by fans, Such as "Yuri on Ice" not being as gay as it could have been because it was a prime time show in Japan (it was on after 2am), to some really harmful stuff. "The boring gays were the ones who survived AIDS, so that's why they didn't fight for employment rights" Which, no they didn't, and yes they did. Also he imagined more women than the average 13 year old straight boy, and only so he could hate on them.

It stuns me people still try to get away with such blatant plagiarism nowadays. I remember even in High School and College getting my writing degree and also the early days of YouTube and vids getting pulled for copyright. Creators of all levels were having those discussions about "At what point is content transformative enough?" and "At what point is a quotation just a paraphrase or ripping the quote wholesale?". Now we get people trying (and often succeeding up to a point) to do the most basic cut-paste jobs and thinking they found some untraceable exploit. Outright plagiarism is one of the VERY VERY few things people on the internet are damn near united on regardless of your beliefs (though some pro A.I. people love to show their ass when it comes to that). And the tools to detect it are becoming better and more known through word-of-mouth. And it's only going to get tougher to get away with. Finished watching the video after coming home from work. God is it satisfying to hear him call out "generative AI" at the end because my God was I thinking the entire time how everything he was criticizing applies to AI stuff, which I why I prefer to refer to AI "art" as AI plagiarism, because that's what it factually is. And as an artist myself and having posted many of my own pieces online, I feel directly targetted by it. For all I know, my work has been fed into those algorithms and being profitted from as we speak without my knowledge or consent. Dude, it makes me want to scream when people act like AI-generated anything is all a hustle thing and the people against it "just don't like competition". Like, you're TRYING to dodge the point by then. AI voice-acting is stolen vocals. AI artwork is stolen art-styles. Most AI writing is stolen work. It's a smokeshow and people are actually idiotic enough to either try to fool everyone into thinking it's a level playing field OR are so stupid they really think it is a level playing field. Ahh that cinemassacre section answered some questions I always had about those screen wave guys. Like, who are they? And what do they do and why does everyone hate them? Also, saw the original monster madness plagiarism video. If you're interested, there is a LadyEmily video on "The Cinemassacre Controversy" that does a deeper dive on how Screenwave (and in a few minor ways James himself, though more in a "content of questionable quality" way and less "genuine act of malice") have messed with Cinemassacre. She touches on the plagiarism in detail and goes into other issues the channel (and Screenwave) have had separate from that. Hbomberguy cites it in the video. youtu.be/EmC5Zte5RnMFinally watching the video... UrinatingTree was an angry gaming reviewer back in the day wasn't he? Good on him to change to angry meme sports fan and kind of documentarist. I remember being a fan of his old content way back when and was still subbed when he started again. I was shocked to see him rise from the dead like he did. If you sort the videos on his channel by oldest vid first, you can still see some of it (he's deleted some that didn't age well) and there's some archivist uploaders that uploaded the stuff he's dumped off. He has said he's debated doing a one-off return to it for shits and grins (FivePoints has admitted to enjoying his Ice Hockey video on an episode of Dumpster Fire) but doesn't want to forego his sports content to do that again, and isn't particularly proud his old content (both in how the content has aged and the quality itself).

It's especially silly considering that artists give one-another tips and advice all the time and nothing makes an artist happier than learning that their work inspired someone else to make their own. On top of that, there ARE applications to AI that can genuinely be helpful to artists, by allowing them to train an AI on their own style in order to help streamling repetitive processes. But funny enough, we don't hear the AI bros trying to sell you shit talk about those, do we? And it's not what greedy companies are interested in developing, is it? One thing I'm increasingly tempted to do is take some AI-generated stuff that people sell on redbubble or something, apply a couple Photoshop filters or just scribble over it, and sell it as my own, since apparently "aLl aRtiSts sTEaL" and that's somehow not plagiarism. Since they truly believe that, surely they wouldn't have a problem with anyone doing it, right? Hell, it would genuinely be more transformative and more personal work than any of the AI shit anyway.

But still. Also with that Applying filters to AI ... I'd have to read the ruling but you might be able to copyright that... since the AI created thing can't be.

I never got the idea James himself was THAT pissed about it. He'd often deflect at cons and stuff. Anytime there was a genuine "shot" from his camp, it was either Stuttering Craig (I know there's a con clip of him having a slide about Bores and talking shit, James laughed along but didn't get too worked up or add any dialogue), or Mike Mateo (who started a LOT of shit behind the scenes, including the original Reddit post calling out Bores).

Yeah, I doubt James gave a shit, himself, really, outside of that it gave him something he'd have to field questions about, which he probably saw as a nuisance. It isn't like Chris Bores likely did any damage to his bottom line.

BTW, since HBomberguy mentioned a lot of good queer creators, many of which were directly harmed by Somerton, I figured I might as well throw my hat into the ring and mention one of my favourites: Diamanda HaganI guess her channel isn't specifically about LGBT themes, but being a lesbian herself, she obviously has an interest in it so it does come up relatively frequently. She also reviews mostly obscure and bizarre films, so again LGBT themes tend to come with the territory. Speaking of, because those are weird and obscure films, I must warn you that it's not for everybody. WHile I'd say most of her stuff is fairly accessible to most people and she is surprisingly wholesome at times, there's a lot of genuinely disturbing horror films, actual porn (albeit censored), fetish stuff and just generally grotesque and/or unpleasant stuff. Don't be shocked if stuff like gore, mutilation, self-harm, rape, etc... is brought up very casually. She's said it herself: she specifically designed her intro to make sure that even someone who'd stumble upon her videos by accident with no knowledge of her work would know what to expect and leave if they find it uncomfortable. And I'll tell you what, her analysis of various works, their place in culture, the historical context around them and yes, the queer themes, are much more profound, better researched and original than anything Somerton has ever crapped out. And she manages to do that without being weirdly sexist and/or biphobic! Honestly, not being queer myself, I've learned quite a slot about LGBTQ+ history and culture from anecdotes in her videos alone. Note that she does also do videos on more mainstream suff like Doctor Who, Red Dwarf and modern-ish TV shows of varying quality in general. In particular, she seems to have gotten really into shows specifically about real-world polar expeditions. So if you want to look her up but don't want to risk it with the more unpleasant stuff, look those up.

From further reading about Illuminaughti, It says something about how bad she is as a person that her plagiarism was somehow the least worst thing she's done.

What the hell is Internet Historian (or any of these clowns, really) thinking when all you have to do is put a sentence or two in Google to see if you are ripping someone off?
Seeing if something has been plagiarized is easier than ever yet they keep doing it.
BTW, an original quote by me:
I hope you are all inspired by this and will give me money.
