From further reading about Illuminaughti, It says something about how bad she is as a person that her plagiarism was somehow the least worst thing she's done. Oh yeah, as someone who used to be subscribed to her and thought she came across as endearingly dorky if not meek, I remember being completely flabbergasted when I first heard about some of the stuff she did, and then more and more revelations came out, and then her attempts to silence and destroy those speaking againsther showed just how unscrupulous she is. It's just incredible to me that someone could just be so overtly... evil. There's no other word for it.

It's just incredible to me that someone could just be so overtly... evil. There's no other word for it. As another former fan, a lot of the things she took great care to say she did were all part of her exploitation of others. She claimed she didn't really watch other video essayists or streamers to avoid the risk of plagiarism allegations when talking to the Serfs, and claimed to go above and beyond what she needed to do financially for her employees, while keeping those who lived with her saddled with debt that didn't come close to covering. She took the wrong lessons from the MLMs she covered, taking the exploitative liar with a smile part rather than trying to be better.

The Illuminaughtii thing was kind of wild in that initially it seemed like just a stupid thing on her part that led to frivolous accusations that she easily refuted... and then more information came out that made it clear, no, there is fire to this smoke. I remember in the Youtube drama thread initially saying it looked like nothing then a couple weeks later posting a follow-up that it actually super wasn't.

Illuminaughti taking pages straight from the Lance Armstrong playbook.
Instead of coming clean (or not being wrong in the first place), just try and ruin anyone's life instead.

Dude, pack it in. You're f***ing done.
#1. Everything you say is going to be under a fine tooth comb at this point to ensure you aren't stealing shit. #2. Everyone sees through the misogyny (even the trans-misogyny there was some of that too) #3. Even if you do somehow redeem yourself, the damage is done.
You had your run dude. Move on and let LGBTQ+ essayists who actually do their own work have the spotlight you hogged.

If he really must try and stay in this space probably his best bet would be to either switch to the AI voice avatar grift on a new account so people don't know it's him or focus exclusively on livestreams. Even then he's probably not hitting the heights he did but he might still be able to bring in some money from it.

I didn't watch the apology video... but I guarantee he's only "Sorry" that he got caught.

I'm generally not someone to say people are beyond redemption, but part of taking accountability is recognizing the harm you've done in your position and removing yourself from it for a time, if not permenantly. He could support other creators in some way (though probably not creatively, for obvious reasons) and still support the cause. But the days of being a figurehead or authority or whatever are done. Ideally he'll take the time to really examine everything that happened, learn from it, and improve himself, if only for his own wellbeing.

I didn't watch the apology video... but I guarantee he's only "Sorry" that he got caught. I made it about 20 minutes and it feels very awkward. I don't think it is a deliberate attempt to gain sympathy, but it's very much of the moment and comes across that way. Like, he mentions being hospitalized and alludes to planning suicide or self-harm. I don't doubt these things for a second, but someone in a better headspace would hopefully recognize that opening your apology with those things risks coming across really badly. I feel bad for him, honestly. He should feel remorse, yes, but not to the point of self-destruction. I can relate to that sort of extreme reaction to guilt. Hopefully he will recognize this as a wake up call before too long and stop digging himself deeper.

I've seen some of Jessie Gender's response video to this, but it looks like this has already been taken down. James needs to get a f***ing job and move on with his life. The thing is, it's not even just that he is a traitor to the queer community, it's not even just that he is a grifter with a bogus movie production house, it's not even just that he is a f***ing plagiarist. It's that without all of the plagiarism, he has nothing. He contributed nothing of worth or note to his videos. He wasn't a good writer, because he stole all his writing. His shot composition was f***ing atrocious despite all the fancy gear he bought. He does not have a talent for this, and he proved it by taking as many shortcuts as he possibly could and refusing to be accountable for any of his bullshit long before Harris just blew him the f*** open for two hours. Get a f***ing job, James, like one of the regular people.

I’m watching someone cover the apology video and no wonder this got pulled immediately, it’s really gross. From the highly manipulative, “I don’t want this to be a sob story but from the word go I’m sobbing,” to still trying to shift everything onto his co-writer to the, “I wish I could make it right, oh by the way there isn’t and never was money,” bit it’s just very transparently manipulative and dishonest.
Edit: And then there's the, "The audience forced my hand, I didn't even want to make a Utena video!" part.

Edit: And then there's the, "The audience forced my hand, I didn't even want to make a Utena video!" part. Missed the Utena part. I don't know anything about James, haven't watched his content before this, and don't want to armchair diagnose, but I hope he recognized how manipulative it was (assuming it wasn't his intent). It can be read as him prioritizing protecting himself over taking accountability. I do have to say, though, that some good came out of this for me personally. From hbomb's analysis of how these things happen and some of the creators' responses, I've had a long think about the selfish things I've done in the past and how I responded to things. With Somerton's video in particular, I had to wonder if I've been more concerned with protecting myself than owning up with apologies. There is unironically a lot to take away from all of this about sincerity, honesty, intention, etc. I don't know if I would have thought as deeply about my own flaws without Somerton in particular dropping the ball like this, so silver lining, I guess? I just hope he learns from it too, but I get the feeling we're a ways away from that

Did see one thing pointed out about it, that a minute in he says it's the most famous post-Sailor Moon magical girl show and like... PreCure? Madoka? Cardcaptor Sakura?
