He didn't directly bring Utena up but he said there was a recent video that leaked off his Patreon that he didn't want to do in the first place and people've kind of largely concluded it's that one from the timing. Did see one thing pointed out about it, that a minute in he says it's the most famous post-Sailor Moon magical girl show and like... PreCure? Madoka? Cardcaptor Sakura? I'm guessing he caught a lot of heat for the video if he brought it up like that. Like, no one forced you to make the video, you chose to do it. At least own that much.

Missed the Utena part. I don't know anything about James, haven't watched his content before this, and don't want to armchair diagnose, but I hope he recognized how manipulative it was (assuming it wasn't his intent). It can be read as him prioritizing protecting himself over taking accountability. I do have to say, though, that some good came out of this for me personally. From hbomb's analysis of how these things happen and some of the creators' responses, I've had a long think about the selfish things I've done in the past and how I responded to things. With Somerton's video in particular, I had to wonder if I've been more concerned with protecting myself than owning up with apologies. There is unironically a lot to take away from all of this about sincerity, honesty, intention, etc. I don't know if I would have thought as deeply about my own flaws without Somerton in particular dropping the ball like this, so silver lining, I guess? I just hope he learns from it too, but I get the feeling we're a ways away from that He didn't directly bring Utena up but he said there was a recent video that leaked off his Patreon that he didn't want to do in the first place and people've kind of largely concluded it's that one from the timing. Did see one thing pointed out about it, that a minute in he says it's the most famous post-Sailor Moon magical girl show and like... PreCure? Madoka? Cardcaptor Sakura? Yeah, I have tremendous respect for all of these series, but any of those three would arguably edge Utena out, as influential as Utena is in its own right. Like, realistically, all three of those have more mainstream fame, particularly Cardcaptor Sakura stateside.

I've had so little exposure to Utena stateside (mostly saw it in old Animerica magazines as a kid) that I had always assumed it was older than Sailor Moon.

Finished watching the main video yesterday. Never heard about this Somerton before this, but damn what an expose on him.
Now I've found a 'reaction to the apology' video and... it doesn't sound like he's learned?
'I'm sorry for the lies in the videos, but I didn't write them and never intended for them to be in the video'?
'I didn't check, I just took it for granted'?
'I now know that's not how citation works'?
'I promise you I did not write the lies'?
'We made a lot of videos we didn't want to make'?
'I was just lazy'?
Thanking HBomberGuy for raising money for the 'wronged authors' but saying he's broke because he's in Toronto... and then offering to put the videos back on YouTube and donating the ad revenue?
Yeah, he definitely blames his 'co-writer' on everything.
Re-opening the Patreon account 'so people can leave'... then taking down the video so people can't see the message...
And ends with a 'moving forward I will do better'?
Wow, what a piece of garbage.
He actually said "on my mother's grave"...

Somerton treats his co-writer as though he's an employee whenever it can be used to deflect criticism. 'How dare you attack my ACE co-writer who is at fault for everything? I won't stand for hate being directed towards him! He works hard and makes mistakes just like other workers, so forgive him and me then move on and donate to my patreon.'
They're close enough friends that Somerton allegedly spent the film studio money to move in with. They aren't just some guy they hired off the internet, he's an active participant and beneficiary.

I've had so little exposure to Utena stateside (mostly saw it in old Animerica magazines as a kid) that I had always assumed it was older than Sailor Moon. Some of that is very likely the art style, which is deliberately evocative of Osamu Dezaki's work from the 1970s and early '80s, like Aim for the Ace, The Rose of Versailles, and so on, especially Rose of Versailles. This definitely contributes to it looking like a relic when it came out.

And it's Shojo, which as a whole tends to change it's style in waves rather than bits at a time, like most of shonen since Hokuto no Ken. And with Utena straight up trying deconstruct some of the magical girl genre's conceptions it made sense to go to a more retro style than the Sailor Moon/Cardcaptor Sakura one that was en vogue at the time (and with the story being what it is, nothing wrong with borrowing from The Rose of Versailles, which was arguably the most famous shojo work until Sailor Moon).

Utena was big in anime circles in the late 90's and early 00's. Also very influential in terms of how it portrays LGBTQ+ characters.

Smart move. It's not plagiarism if you just don't say anything whatsoever.
Honestly the fact that it immediately follows, "Why does this keep happening?" and then she just shrugs and it's silent for minutes on end is absolutely hysterical. Would be brilliant comedy if it was on purpose.

If the allegations are to be believed, the people she was mistreating were her production staff so she's in the same position folks like Alex Jones are in where the people willing to work for them on the production side are not exactly the best around.

Guess who's popped his head up again.
Not watched myself but apparently it includes things like saying his victims have already forgiven him, still trying to put the blame on his cowriter, and that he did it because of a childhood head injury. So yeah, dude has learned nothing.

Also, way to disprove your plagiarism by taking the exact same title HBomberguy uses for his videos.
