85-Flowers in the Attic-Anchor Bay DVD
What an odd film. The book it is base don was a hit,I can remember seeiing people reading copies when i was young. It just feels like a book that would have to be changed a pile to be made into a film.
And they did....Mother has to move back in with her parents. Tells her kids they gotta live in the attic so the grandfather doesnt know they exist. And once he dies they are free.
All the stuff that made the book a hit is almost completely cut out of the film. Or at least the cut of the film that is out on home media.
Makes me wonder if Wes Craven had directed this like planned how different it would be.
The remake for LIFETIME is much closer to the novel.

2024 New Releases
#30 MaXXXine
Between her monologue at the end of Pearl and her unhinged performance in Inifinity Pool, last year Mia Goth firmly entered into my list of names I now see as a highlight in cast lists.
While I don't think I liked it as much as X and Pearl, I still enjoyed this movie a lot. I think the main reason for this is both of those caught me off guard with where I thought the movie was going and where it went. While with MaXXXine, the story went exactly how I expected. That's not necessarily a bad thing, a twist for the sake of a twist isn't a good idea, but it did mean there wasn't that shock or surprise like with the others.
Still there's plenty to like here. The sleazy, smoky 80's aesthetic is fun, Kevin Bacon is clearly having a great time oozing around as a slimy New Orleans detective and while the movie is pretty tame on gore for the most part, when it does happen, hooo-boy, does it happen!
VERDICT: While not quite reaching the levels of its predecessors, MaXXXine is still a really fun 80’s soaked thriller that doesn’t ask it be taken too seriously.

He said everything about the movie was wrong-headed, a train wreck in slow motion. Honestly haven't worked up the courage to see it yet...

106. MaXXXine - Saw this in theaters. Ever since I had heard that this movie was in development after seeing "Pearl," this film was definitely on my must-see list, and this was two years ago. When I first saw the trailer, I was stoked for it. Plus, recently, I revisited "X" and "Pearl," but I watched them in chronological order in terms of events that happened in both films.
It must be said, I am glad that I revisited those films, because a lot of aspects of "X" come into play in this film, but story aside, I can see that Ti West went with a style in this one. For "X," he had that grindhouse feel for it and in a lot of ways, the picture did give it that feel of a film from the 1970s. "Pearl" had more of a feel of a film from the 1930s or 1940s, but in color. This film, on the other hand, had tropes that were found in 1980s films, while also having a feel for a film of that era. I could see where Ti West going with this film.
Also, in terms of gore, there was one scene that made me uncomfortable, but the rest, while also unsettling, they did not compare to a particular scene early in the film.
As for performances, I think Mia Goth really shows that she has range. I am now curious about more of her work. Kevin Bacon delivered as a sleazy private detective, but come on, he is a great actor. I couldn't expect anything less from him.
Overall, I thought it was a good way to cap off this trilogy. It has its own style and it works as a mystery thriller mixed with a slasher film.

#280 - House Party: Tonight's the Night (Tubi) *1st Viewing Legitimately one of the worst movies I've ever seen. [½*] I hear it's an improvement over "House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute," which was bad, and I mean BAD. It's slightly worse to be honest. Both are terrible though.

88-The Dark Knight Returns Part 1-Blu Ray
The comics this is based on might still be my favorite capestuff comic from the big 2. Read it as it was slowly coming out and with this movie bought it the day it hit shelves.
The few changes I can deal with. Betting I am one of the few that wants DKSB and DKIII made into animated films.

43. The Iron Claw
Just dropped on Prime after I missed it in the cinema.
First off, damn that Ric Flair is terrible, I'd put money on 90% of this board being able to put in a better performance.
It's OK, but oddly paced. At the same time, it's very slow. But also there's so much material, it rushes through everything so none really gets an in depth character, even Kevin and none of the tragedies really hit that hard or have time to sink in.

103. MaXXXine (2024)
Just got back from theater seeing this. In comparison to "X," it doesn't quite reach those levels. Maxxxine is not someone to root for. One scene in particular made me really uncomfortable. It was also a bit too predictable. I still think it's a good horror film though.

#283 - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Disney+)
*1st Viewing
Yeah, this sucked but Phoebe Waller-Bridge does a hell of a carry job trying to save it. [**]
#284 - Anaconda (Netflix)
*3rd Viewing
Jon Voigt's accent, a giant snake eating people, Ice Cube playing Ice Cube, and a random Owen Wilson. This is the kind of tasty garbage movie that I appreciate. [***]

29. Godzilla Minus One
We lost the war and we all have PTSD so what are we supposed to do about this freaking huge lizard who wants to kill us all? The human storyline was a bit slow paced but ultimately satisfying. Godzilla himself was wonderful. Big and noisy and stompy-smashy. A great addition to Godzilla history.

89-Deer Camp '86-Mill Creek DVD The cover caught my attention 6 friends go out in the woods of Michigan to hunt. Stopping at a bar on the way. There they meet the bar tender Star. Who is killed that night. Once at the cabin, the 6 guys start noticing odd stuff. Before being attacked by what I can only describe as some kind of Native American vengence demon. Sure this is low budget, but outside of an explosion enhancement near the end I saw no crappy CGI. Decent acting and who ever was manning the camera had a good eye for blocking and light. 8.4 farted out guts of 10

Haven't seen this made for tv remake since I think the year it was broadcast. Wanted to see it again. it's not streaming. The DVD was cheap. Like cost more for shipping then the dvd.
Ok this aint great. I have seen the original more times than I can count between theaters and home video.
My biggest issue is the dude playign RiffRaff makes the oddest faces when singing.

This should be a super fun, absolutely ridiculous movie. While it has those moments, it never feels like it goes far enough or is fun enough. It's decent. [**½]

30. Under Paris
After encountering a deadly shark in the Pacific Ocean, an oceanographer moves to Paris. I sure hope that same Shark doesn’t track her down there. It is a pretty ridiculous story combined with terrible writing, cheesy special effects, and a truly lame ending.

107. Domestic Disturbance (2001) - Watched this on DVD. I was in the mood to watch a movie tonight. I had a hard time deciding on a film. This was the shortest of the bunch, so I went with this. I remember seeing TV spots for this back in 2001, but I never watched this film, at least until now.
I recall having heard some negative about this film, but I really don't think it's all that bad. In fact, I could give John Travolta credit for playing the role of a doting dad who wants to protect his son. Vince Vaughn was actually unsettling in this role, whether it's putting up a nice front to being an ass and finally to being a violent and dangerous human being. With the plot being about domestic abuse, it can be basic, but it's not too basic when the villain is revealed to be more than just an abuser.
With all that said, it's not a bad way to spend 90 minutes.
