86. Back to the Future Part III (1990) 87. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) 88. Skateboard (1978)About a year ago, one of the last DVD's I got from Netflix was a movie called Joysticks. It was basically an 80's booby movie with an arcade theme. It wasn't very good, but the real treasure of the DVD was it's inclusion of trailers for a couple of other cheesy old movies that I had never heard of and really wanted to track down. This was one of them, but I couldn't find it anywhere. At least not streaming for a reasonable price. Finally found it this weekend though and figured it was time. For those not familiar, Manny is a shlubby and debt-ridden talent agent who, to pay back the $10,000 he owes to a mobster, puts together a professional skateboarding team of teenagers (including Leif Garrett) to earn the money in stunt exhibitions and competitions. Drama ensues until the happy ending. Honestly, it's not a horrible movie. Manny manages to pull off the "jerk with a heart of gold" routine just enough that you really do root for him, and the kids, while they looked high half the time, are mostly likable. It is very much a product of its time with a very 70's tone and aesthetic to it, but it also has this almost Mighty Ducks feel to it that gives it a charm.

165. GIRL FOR HIRE (1983) Failed pilot for a Private Eye/Noir Detective show, but it stars a WOMAN! Bess Armstrong as the Girl for Hire solving crimes like "Who wanted to kill this author and take his new book" which is the movie's main plot (with a twist of "Wait, why did this guy hire her to begin with?" mini-mystery). I understand why it didn't get picked up but it had some cut moments.
166. INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN (1956) Lon Chaney Jr is set for execution for a killed cop during a robbery because his partner's turned state's evidence at the request of the prosecuting attorney who had hired his gang to hit the place with insider knowledge. However, Chaney Jr's character, named BUTCHER, hid the money and is taking that secret to the grave as retribution. The only thing is...a mad scientist steals his executed body and does an experiment that causes Butcher not only to come back to life, but for his body's cells to replicate so quickly it makes her nigh-invincible. After killing the doctor who brought him back (What an up-and-down night for THAT guy), Butcher goes on a quest to pay a visit to the crew that set him up.
It's an MST3k movie that I watched without robots and found it perfectly fine for what it was. Lon Chaney Jr could carry a movie, even with all the weird close-ups on his twitching eyes. Not bad.
167. #CHADGETSTHEAXE (2022) Yet another Influencer-Based-Found-Footage movie that I've seen this year. This one follows a group of four influencers looking to get a big audience by investigating the house where a cult murdered a bunch of people. This, as you may guess, goes poorly...but is it all an elaborate prank on the in-no-way-based-on-Logan-Paul Chad?
Has a few legitimately good creepy moments, which is a lot to say in these types of movies. Best use of an Emoji filter in a horror movie in quite some time.
168. ARCADIAN (2024) Nicolas Cage starring in a "Quiet Place" inspired post-apocalyptic "People living and dealing with monsters in their life" horror film. It's perfectly fine for what it is, with some absurdly creepy monsters amid a rather boring collection of human characters.
169. SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED: A TALE OF THREE LETTERS The latest in the Hallmark Mystery series of films about an elite team of post office workers in the dead letter department, solving mysteries to deliver old mail. This one's main story is a bit contrived (I mean, it's like the 11th of these) but the dynamics of the post workers carries it through, especially with a bizarre plotline that is essentially the anti-Gift of the Magi set-up.
I watched all of the others with my mother, so I essentially watched this for her since it's been a year since I lost her. Silly, but it felt right.
170. ACCIDENT MAN (2018) Really fun action movie, full of extremely good fights amid a regular set-up. Carried by Scott Adkins' charisma as the low-budget action dude, but featuring people like Michael Jai White, Ray Parks, and Ray Stevenson doesn't hurt.
Enjoyed it enough that I plan on watching the sequel eventually.
171. THE INHERITANCE (2024) A family is called together and told by the matriarch (played by Bob Gunton, aka the Warden from Shawshank or the father from Dead Silence) that he is marked for death at midnight of his 75th birthday, so they must protect him or they'll get nothing from his will.
Directed by Alejandro Brugués, who has mainly done anthology shorts over the last few years, and written by "Not that" Joe Russo who used to produce Mick Garris's Post Mortem podcast, it seems to be another in a long line of "Business with Supernatural dealings as allegories" but I haven't watched the other things people tend to list with this (Fall of the House of Usher, Ready or Not, etc), so it was relatively new and decent to me.
Ending is predictable but satisfying.
172. HELLARIOUS (2019) A collection of Seven Horror-Comedy shorts involving things like killer shopping carts, Chupacabra attacks, and overly creative lunch ladies. It all adds up to...well, another anthology of hits and misses. I will admit the last segment that seems to feature the equivalent of "Paul Blart: Satan Worshipper" was a good ending segment.

108. The Glass House (2001) - Watched this on DVD. I had this for a while. It's overdue, too. So before I return it, I decided to watch it. After having watched "Domestic Disturbance," maybe I might start an early-2000s thriller kick (or maybe other films from that decade, not just that portion of it).
I remember hearing about this movie way back when. All I remember hearing was that it starred Leelee Sobieski and that it has to do with her character and her character's brother being taken in by the friends of their parents after their death. I am not sure what led me to want to watch it. However, after seeing this, I actually thought it was fine for a psychological thriller. Stellan Skarsgård was rather convincing in his role as not only a creep in some scenes but also rather sinister. Some of the suspense kept me on my toes. One of the gripes I had was that the ending felt a little too, I don't know, "Hollywood"? If you know what I mean. It felt more like an action sequence, but I suppose it worked in some ways for this film.
In the end, I would say this movie is okay. It's not the best mystery thriller out there, but it's enjoyable for what it is.

91-No Escape-DVD
Ray Liota's sci fi action prison movie.
First off this dvd is non anamorphic widescreen. So had too zoom my tv.
Still really fun and kind of forgotten 90s film.
In the future all prisons world wide and privately owned. And the worst of the worst gets sent to an island.
Ray is sent and tries to escape.

109. Don't Say a Word - Watched this on DVD. I watched another 2000s thriller. This was another one that I got from the library sometime ago. I never saw this movie before, but I remember seeing the TV spots and also the promotion for it to be shown on TV (namely when it was shown on FX) with Brittany Murphy (RIP) singing "I will never tell."
What shows how much I knew about the plot was that I didn't expect there to be a kidnapping plot and having to do something to meet the demands of the bad guys or else a loved-one is offed. It got more interesting to me, especially with Michael Douglas playing the role of doting father who wants to save his daughter. It was also rather suspenseful in some scenes. I really wondered how far the villains would have gone.
I also thought Brittany Murphy did well in her scenes, especially with her character's mental state. It's such a shame she died so soon (I know she died years after this film, but still). Plus, you can't go wrong with Sean Bean as the villain.
I enjoyed it, but I also saw how formulaic this film was its plot elements.
I learned that this film was based on a book. I think I will give it a read.

#3) "The Return of Captain Nemo", 1978 American sci-fi adventure. *snip*6 out of 10. #4) "Fire & Ice", 1983 American animated movie. *snip*... a fun 7 out of 10. #5) "Adios, Sabata" (aka. "Indio Black, sai che ti dico: Sei un gran figlio di...,"), 1970 spaghetti western starring Yul Brynner. Mexican revolutionaries hire Sabata to steal load of gold from Austrian army, turns into a mess when the real gold is missing. Fun little flick, lots of colourful characters and silly dialogue. Brynner is playing Sabata as the smartest cat in the room. Dean Reed is Ballantine, a scholarly hustler trying to turn everything to his advantage. The rest of the cast is fun with their own little quirks. The story is full of outrageous twists (but it's OK because Sabata is on top of it all), and there's a bunch of gunfights to keep the plot holes filled in. Not on par with classics like "The Magnificent Seven" but a good watch. 7 out of 10. Just for fun, here's the trailer...

A fairly ridiculous human story meets a fairly ridiculous monkey story and ends with not enough Godzilla and barely more than a cameo by Mothra.

2024 New Releases
#31 Longlegs
There are things I liked and didn't like in this one.
Things I liked - I really enjoyed Maika Monroe. Her FBI Agent Harper is a barely restrained ball of neuroses who appears equally uncomfortable engaging in a simple conversation as she does entering into a pitch-black room with her weapon drawn.
- In parts, the sound design and shot composition lend what should be mundane scenes an oppressive almost other-worldly impression. At many times throughout the movie it’s almost as if the character is in the memory of a space instead of the space itself. Given that a recurring theme in the movie is an ambiguous childhood trauma Harker possesses, these elements don’t feel too far from Skinamarink.
Things I didn't like - For me the movie feels like two different films stitched together. We have the FBI procedural investigation portions which are played absolutely dead straight but then we have the supernatural occult portions which feel jarring in comparison. Personally I feel the movie either needed to be played serious with any demonic forces clearly established as being in the mind of the antagonist (e.g. Red Dragon), or they needed to commit fully to the fantastical elements and ramp that up. As is, it feels like the film is one-foot-in, one-foot-out which for me, ultimately, means it doesn’t stand up properly.
- I love Nicolas Cage, but he is a distraction in this movie. He oscillates from genuinely chilling to absolutely ridiculous, with no warning as to when he’ll swerve. The feeling of menace the character invokes is somewhat undercut when you find yourself snickering at an utterly bonkers line delivery. I really feel like you can’t have Nicolas Cage as a supporting character in a movie anymore as he’s just so distracting to the rest of the film. Add to this some truly bizarre facial prosthetics, I spent much of the time he’s on screen just asking ‘Why?’ about a lot of things.
VERDICT: Some effective film craft and a wonderful performance from Monroe are unfortunately undercut by an inconsistent tone that make the movie feel wobbly. Still worth checking out if you like seeing Nicolas Cage do his Nicolas Cage thing.

92-Mortal Kombat-Flipper DVD
This is that pack of the first 2 MK films on a single disc. In glorious 4:3 and compressed to hell and back.
Saw this opening weekend, more than liekly drunk at the base theater. Hated it back then.
Rewatched it earlier and it is worse than I remembered. Horrid CGI,bad acting and it just looks cheap.

110. Trapped (2002) - Watched this on DVD. I am kind of continuing my 2000s thriller kick, though I don't know how long it will go for. However, there are some that I want to watch that are from the 1990s.
Back in 2019, when a record store was going out of business, it was down to the point where a lot of items may have been sold and there were a lot less in the inventory and the items were at either 80 or 90% off. You just know that the last day before it would close was near at that point. I recall coming across this and thought, "why not?" I remember being interested in seeing this movie a long time ago but never had the chance to see it until after I bought it.
I recall enjoying it okay when I first watched it. Now that I saw it again, I still get the same level of enjoyment in regards to the suspense in the film. I also thought Kevin Bacon, as always, played the role of the villain well. Charlize Theron did fine as the main protagonist who wanted her daughter back from the abductors. Also, Dakota Fanning, who was really young when she did this film, did fine with what she had to work with. It's amazing how she has come a long way and continues to act to this day.
One gripe I had was the final 15-20 minutes. I am not sure where the screenwriter (more on this in a bit) was going with the climax on the interstate freeway and a seaplane landing on the road and causing a pile-up. It felt like it went the Hollywood route when it got to that point. Other than that, this film isn't all too bad as a suspense thriller.
One more thing I should note is that I recently found out that this film was based on a novel called "24 Hours" by Greg Iles, who also wrote the script for this film. I actually want to read the book now. I also noticed that the writer has a commentary track on the DVD. I could watch it with the director's commentary first, but I think I might save the writer's commentary for after I read the book.

87. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) 88. Skateboard (1978) 89. Wayne's World 2 (1993)Another YouTube movie. A fun movie. In some ways it's better then the original. It's more streamlined and cuts out really deadweight sub-plots like Wayne's ex-girlfriend or Garth's robot hand. But at the same time it doesn't reach the same highs as its predecessor, and I'd consider it a step down over-all. That said, it's about the only franchise out there that I'd be genuinely interested in seeing a 30 year later sequel to.

93-Any Gun can Play-Alpha Video DVD
Bought this to have a physical copy of Fighting Fists of Shanghi Joe. And the copy I found had this Spaghhetti western satire as a second feature.
Decent Widescreen print, crackly soundd and the print is speckled with dust and dirt.
What can I say this is a semi comedy that veers from serious to comedy many times.
If you like westerns worth seeing.

111. The Last Boy Scout - Watched this on DVD. Recently, I bought the novelization of this film off of eBay. Although I had started reading it, it also put me in the mood to watch it.
I have read that there were issues with the making of this film. For one thing, Shane Black wrote the script after a bad break-up, which kind of shows how cynical the script is and how misogynistic it is in some areas. Plus, there are some aspects of the story that are a bit off, yet they work. It wasn't just the script, though. Tony Scott (RIP) was at odds with Joel Silver, the producer of this film. Plus, Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans did not get along when doing this film despite their onscreen chemistry.
Aside from a lot of the issues with the production, it is well regarded and has somewhat of a cult status. Sure, it wasn't as big of a hit as "Die Hard" or "Lethal Weapon," but it did decently in theaters, and it also did well in on home video. Tony Scott's direction actually worked, even though some scenes were a bit flashy for the script. I also thought Taylor Negron (RIP) played a good villain.
Overall, it's a fun action film with some good noir-like elements. I will note that it took some time to get behind Joe Hallenbeck (Bruce Willis's character) because he was hardly likable at first.
