I watched Terrifier for the first time this Halloween. That was pretty good, that. What makes it is that Art the clown is exactly what you need for a villain in a movie like this: equal parts horrifying and genuinely amusing. I also like that it's the kind of movie that's genuinely self-aware: it knows what it wants to do and does it without being distracted by the typical expectations. Well, with that said, I do wish they calmed down a bit on the loud jump scare noises, which in my opinion only serve to lessen the impact of the scares. It's especially a shame because with Art being a compeltely silent killer, to the point he doesn't even scream or gasp when hurt, it would make all the more sense for the scares to also be quiet.
That doesn't stop it from being a great horror movie, though. It's got great atmosphere, the soundtrack is outstanding and while the protagonists aren't the most complex, most of them are likeable enough that you care that they are in danger. That feels extremely refreshing in the endless ocean of douchebags, who seem to be written to satiate mainstream audience's weird rhetorical revenge fantasies. It's nice to see a horror film that can have both a strong villain AND relatable protagonists.
In many ways, it feels like a legitimate spiritual successor to older gritty and fruesome horror films from the 70's and 80's. And I don't mean that in the usual overly tryhard way where they constantly shove it in your face and actively try to be stereotypical, but simply by being uncompromising to their concept, and it's got that vibe of innocent people being randomly thrust into this onslaught of violence that they have to escape from, without bogging it down with unnecessary background that tries to overexplain why it's happening without that actually adding anything to the story. Sometimes, you just need people to try and escape danger.
Looking forward to watching the sequels (and also the shorts that featured Art before this).
Edit: Oh and yeah, you may have heard that this movie has a reputation for being very gory and it's warranted. So if you don't deal well with gore, be warned.

This is really good even with the most unlikable woman possible included but I just kept wondering why so many Walking Dead actors were here. [***½]

Just dumb fun and on a day like today, I really needed that. [***]

#8) "Biggles: Adventure In Time", 1986 British adventure film. *snip*The basic parts of action and adventure with Biggles and his crew in WW1 are fine enough, but they hammered into the script this stupid concept of a time-travelling American trying to help, ONLY because the movie "Back To The Future" was a hit. *snip*3 out of 10. Only just checked the thread again so only just saw this. Biggles basically chose the wrong 80s franchise to copy. It shouldn't have shoehorned in Back to the Future, it should have been a British Indiana Jones. I know that's basically James Bond, but with him you can't go back into WW2 for adventures, use that setting and trappings, find some weird history he can fit in for a fun adventure. It may have been forgivable if they tried to tie the 'super weapon' into the time travel... using the machine rips a hole in time that pulls the American through by accident or something. There was no effort to do so.

52. Despicable Me 4
I liked it but didn’t love it. It was more a cluster of unrelated storylines rather than one complete plot. The villain was pretty underwhelming. There were several stretches of just pure chaos (which felt more like scenes from the Minions ride at Universal Studios). And a sure sign of weak writing is padding the run time with an unnecessary musical number at the end.

[***½] The Mist was made by Frank Darabont who was also the writer/director of Walking Dead Season 1. He's a bit like Christopher Nolan or Tim Burton in that he's got a list of actors that he really likes working with.

2024 New Releases
#55 Venom: The Last Dance
Tom Hardy is once again great in this but other than that there wasn't much else here to get behind.
The story threat feels thin as there really isn't a villain in the movie. There's a Thanos-like shadowy man sitting on a throne and Eddie/Brock are just running from his alien attack dog. The final act stakes escalation is that now there are 5 alien attack dogs!
The script is very patchwork. Characters return and do nothing, new characters are given backstory that don't add anything other than runtime. At one point Eddie/Venom take an action that they explicitly know will let their pursuers know where they are, they do it anyway and when the threats show up, they act surprised. But y’see they needed to take that action, otherwise we wouldn’t have a dance scene in the film. I get there were jokes in the first movie but they were spread liberally enough. Here it's basically a buddy cop movie and there's way too many gags and banter.
VERDICT: Another entertaining turn by Tom Hardy but there’s really not enough here to make this a cinema must-see. Wait for it to go to streaming.

While this wasn't nearly as good as The Fallout, Megan Park knocks it out of the park again and is one of the most intriguing new directors around. A heartfelt, creative movie boosted by some really good performances. [****]

139-The Crow(2024)-4k UHD
So I love The Crow comic. I love the first movie. Saw the trailer for this reboot/remake and was worried.
Was worried for no reason. This was great. Great soundtrack, looks amazing. And the feel of the movie is much much closer to the comic.
Noticed the folks I have talked to that enjoyed this film have read the comic. The ones that hated it either didnt see anything but the trailer or are mega fans of the original film and never read the comic.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey
So bad it’s good. So so bad. But hilarious. The movie is the embodiment of that Geico horror movie commercial. I was thoroughly entertained.

150. Smile 2 - Saw this in theaters. Okay, circumstances led me to see this as I was interested in seeing it, but I have not watched the first film yet. This wouldn't be the first time this has happened, and it won't be the last, either.
After seeing the trailers, I was intrigued. One of the drawing factors was Naomi Scott, who I have had somewhat of a crush on since seeing the 2017 "Power Rangers" film and the 2019 "Aladdin" film. With that said, I went in wondering what the whole concept was about and why people were smiling. Now that I have seen it, the story made sense. Of course, it was all part of the mystery aspect of the story, as this film was not only horror but also mystery and a psychological thriller.
Naomi Scott delivered in her performance because she was rather believable in her role. It wasn't just with how scared and traumatized she was, but also how she played an overwhelmed pop star. However, what stood out to me was Parker Finn's direction. I liked a lot of the camera work and editing. It was interesting to see how the camera would move from one perspective to another without doing quick cuts. The same could be said when you would see a first-person camera angle, as well as the camera doing upside down views. It almost puts you in the perspective of the protagonist and makes you feel like you're going as crazy as she is.
I feel like I should have watched the first film beforehand, but I do plan to do it soon.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey So bad it’s good. So so bad. But hilarious. The movie is the embodiment of that Geico horror movie commercial. I was thoroughly entertained. Exactly. There is bad but entertaining films and bad and boring films. Blood and Honey is bad and entertaining. 140-Poltergeist remake-Youtube Thought I had seen this when it hit home video. But remembered nothing about it. Watched it this morning and once it was over it faded from my memory. I do remember the plot was very similar to the original, with a few updates cause of how many years later this was made. Oh and like the original this wasn't directed by Tobe Hooper. 3.4 fighting spirits with a drone out of 10

151. Smile (2022) - Watched this on Paramount+. After watching the sequel, I knew I had to watch this one. Although it would have been more appropriate to have watched this prior this, and as noted before, it wasn't the first time nor will it be the last time where I watch sequel prior to seeing its predecessor. The funny thing about this is that I also found out that there is a short called "Laura Hasn't Slept," that was the precursor for this film.
With all that being said, I will just say this: I liked the sequel better, but seeing this film really showed the plot elements from another perspective and also worked. The jump scares were well done. The characters helped make the plot work. I also thought Sosie Bacon (the daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgewick) did a good job in her role. I also found myself feeling for her character and her situation. Also, some of the effects done in this were good, though there were some issues with some of them later on in the film.
I can say that this was an effective horror film with its supernatural and psychological theme. However, after seeing the sequel, I wonder if a third film could work. Only time will tell.

Blood & Honey 2
Probably a better movie than #1, but I was less entertained... Until we got to the big finale! Also, Tigger just being a blatant rip off of another all-time horror icon was hilarious.
