#433 - Ant-Man (2015; Disney+)

Paul Rudd and Michael Pena carry this, boosting a film with some lackluster side characters and villains. [***½]

I respect that this surprisingly became Elise's franchise but this entry again feels redundant and isn't as scary as the previous entries. [**]

Watched Scream for the first time tonight. It's a lighthearted horror/mystery movie. It's sort of a parody of classic horror movies, but it's not a comedy, if that makes sense.
I really liked it. I kept guessing which character was the killer, and I was pretty surprised in the end. The last twenty minutes or so are pretty suspenseful.

#8) "Biggles: Adventure In Time", 1986 British adventure film. *snip*3 out of 10. #9) "West & Soda", 1965 Italian animated movie. Set in the American 'old west', gruesome crook Gruesome and his lackeys Ursus and Slim try to take the lovely Clementine and her land, until she gets help from the handsome stranger Johnny. Some people (especially the film producers) consider this to be the first "spaghetti western", since it was in production before Sergio Leone's "A Fistful Of Dollars" was made but released after. Lots of goofy fun. Good story, fun animation, good music. Animation reminded me at times of Chuck Jones' work, and at other times of Genndy Tartakovsky's "Samurai Jack". Well worth checking out, I saw it free on YouTube. 8 out of 10.

148. A Thin Line Between Love and Hate - Watched this on Tubi. For some strange reason, I had an itch to watch this. I have the soundtrack album. I have been listening to a particular song from that album lately. However, aside from seeing trailers and TV spots as a kid, as well as seeing bits and pieces of it, I have never watched this from start to finish.
I will note that I was a little reluctant to watch this on Tubi, mostly because of the ads. However, I couldn't find it on library databases, nor was it available On Demand from cable premium channels, and I didn't want to rent it. So I went with this option. I recall reading somewhere that this was another take on "Fatal Attraction." This also feels like a movie that was Martin Lawrence's pet project, given that he not only starred in it, but also co-wrote it, co-produced it, and directed it.
With all of that said, I could see that this film was entertaining in some areas, but there were some issues. For example, in many scenes, you could tell Martin Lawrence was a bit out of it because he had drug problems at the time this was filmed. However, I saw that he and Bobby Brown's character (Yes, Bobby Brown, as in New Edition) worked well with another. I also thought he worked well with Regina King, and also Lynn Whitfield, who was definitely one of the best parts of this movie. In fact, Lynn Whitfield played the role of a psychopath really well that she was scary. Which brings me to how the first half felt like a romantic comedy and the second half felt like a thriller, if dark comedy. The comedic bits were still there, but it got rather dark.
I will say that the film was okay, but when it comes to other films with Martin Lawrence, there are plenty that I liked better than this one. However, I didn't mind watching it. I wouldn't say it was great, though.

There is an anthology show on Screambox called TALES FROM THE VOID, that I've been watching and are able to be logged on Letterboxd, but I'm not going to count them here.
235. HAUNTED ULSTER LIVE (2023) Another addition to the "Live Newscast goes Awry" section of the found footage genre, this one is usually dismissed as "Irish Ghostwatch" but I enjoyed the story it wove with an absolutely absurd twist in the third act when we get to the traditional "Throw the budget at the screen!" finale.
236. LIGHTS OUT (2016) Ghost that can only get you in darkness really feels like it should've had at least three direct-to-whatever counts as DVD sequels by now. This thing does as much as it can think of with the gimmick, with the main story kind of a secondary thing.
237. GODS OF THE DEEP (2023) Another low-budget Lovecraft inspired adaptation. Has a dude in a suit as the Cthulhu and that's mildly endearing to me.
238. CRY FOR THE STRANGERS (1983) The only movie (on Letterboxd?) adapted from a John Saul novel is a made-for-TV knockoff of Carpenter's The Fog. In it, a storm moves in on a small town and when it moves out, another citizen is dead, which apparently happens on a regular enough rate for the sheriff to be like, "I don't know. Couldn't tell you," and for the vacationing psychologist to be like "DUDE, WAIT WHAT?!"
Has a rather familiar reveal at the end.
239. CARVED (2024) A chemical spill causes a pumpkin to become sentient and monstrous...and it does not appreciate the local carving competition.
A real goofy concept that was probably better as a short, but was fine.
240. AZREAL (2024) Another "Nobody talks" movie that uses the gimmick of "Revelation happened and those on earth don't speak for talking is now a sin" to throw Samara Weaving into another "survive situation after situation" horror film.
Compelling despite the gimmick.

51. Time Cut
It’s a little bit horror and a little bit science fiction and a bit teen high school angst. Kind of silly but the cute girls made it watchable. Disregard the wild logical failures and many plot holes. I guessed the villain, method and motivation by the halfway point.

149. Election (1999) - Watched this on MGM+ On Demand. It's weird. While it's election week here in the states, I started reading the book of the same name by Tom Perrotta, of which this movie is an adaptation. I felt like watching it. So what if I didn't finish the book first? Besides, I had seen the movie before, although it had been quite a long time since my last viewing.
I will say that this movie holds up with its style. Considering I had already read a few chapters of the novel, I could see that the movie does the whole perspective thing that the book does because there are many bits where you are reading from a character's point-of-view. However, in this film, they are mostly done in voice-over narrations, which work and correlate with the different POVs in the book. The dark comedy still works in some scenes, especially in a movie where almost everyone is not a decent person (except for Chris Klein's character). Plus, I thought that the scenes with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon on-screen together worked well because they played so well off each other.
Another thing that stood out was Alexander Payne's direction, especially the camera work. Okay, I will say that I liked how the bits with internal monologues were done with a freeze-framed shot and you hear the internal narration. Then you have some bits with closeup shots, zooming out, and the camera tilting in some scenes. I wonder if he uses that style in his other films. There is only one way to find out.
I still enjoy this movie. Now I just need to finish the book, and read the sequel called "Tracey Flick Can't Win," which I hear is being adapted into a film.

2024 New Releases
#49 Baghead
Iris inherits a pub and becomes guardian to the entity living in its basement, a creature that can change its form and allow the living to speak to the dead.
Some good performances but few big scares and a predictable story means there’s nothing on show here that’s not been done more effectively in similar movies such as Talk To Me.
#50 Infested
A French apartment building becomes overrun by deadly, rapidly growing spiders.
Played completely straight with consequences shown to creeping crawling effect, the peril is cranked high with charismatic performances making us root for our protagonists. Worth a watch but definitely not one for arachnophobes!
#51 MadS Filmed in a one-take style, Romaine tries a new drug from his dealer which coincides with what appears to be the onset of a viral outbreak causing people to break out into extreme violence.
Another French movie, MadS is stylish and chaotic, a whirlpool of a movie that causes the senses to spiral as society appears to do the same.
#52 Stopmotion Stop-motion animator Ella finds herself becoming obsessed with her latest project, a grim piece featuring grotesque puppet creations.
A fantastically creative film exploring the pressure to create and the struggle between an artist and their art. A touch predictable story-wise but this can be forgiven when its told in such an interesting and enthralling way.
#53 In A Violent Nature Imagine Friday the 13th where the camera doesn't follow the teens but instead sticks mainly with the mute lumbering killer.
A unique and super interesting take on the slasher genre. With some creative kills sprinkled throughout, it's a lot of fun seeing the standard slasher plot take place 'around' the killer whenever he's close enough to hear the interactions of his victims. A small thing I loved is that based on certain lines that are dropped, it feels like the movie this killer exists in appears to be like Part 2 or 3 of the series.
#54 V/H/S/Beyond The latest installment of the V/H/S series with another collection of short horror movies, this time collected under the loose theme of Alien encounters.
Like any of the V/H/S series this is a mixed bag with some shorts being stronger than others, gladly this time there were more hits than misses for me. This is an easy watch and with a wide variety in the tone and the slants they put on the Alien gimmick, you're sure to find at least one that really grabs you.

A little ambivalent on this one. It's got good characters, a decent story, I like the themes but it just all kind of goes by like a dream and nothing really sank in.

Ain't watched nothin' since July... #6) "Surviving The Game", 1994 American action movie. Modern version of "The Most Dangerous Game", starring Ice-T as the hunted. *snip*Fun, though. 7 out of 10. #7) "Rock & Rule", 1983 Canadian animated movie. Rock superstar kidnaps female singer to help summon a demon, her old band tries to rescue her. *snip*Always loved this movie. 9 out of 10. #8) "Biggles: Adventure In Time", 1986 British adventure film. American Jim Ferguson finds himself skipping back and forth through time, coming to the assistance to legendary World War 1 hero Biggles fight against the German army and their new super-weapon. This movie is a mess. The basic parts of action and adventure with Biggles and his crew in WW1 are fine enough, but they hammered into the script this stupid concept of a time-travelling American trying to help, ONLY because the movie "Back To The Future" was a hit. It just didn't make sense. There's no real explanation WHY it's happening. There's no real explanation HOW it's happening. And there didn't seem to be any consistency as to WHEN it happens. It takes away from what could have been a decent little adventure. And there's a remarkably stupid character in the background who is just there for stupid comedy. It's a shame that this is the last film credit for Peter Cushing (who did well, given that he was given nothing to do). The guy who was Biggles was good (Neil Dickson), the guy who was the American was a block of wood (Alex Hyde-White). The producers should have not released this, it's a mess. 3 out of 10. Only just checked the thread again so only just saw this. Biggles basically chose the wrong 80s franchise to copy. It shouldn't have shoehorned in Back to the Future, it should have been a British Indiana Jones. I know that's basically James Bond, but with him you can't go back into WW2 for adventures, use that setting and trappings, find some weird history he can fit in for a fun adventure.
