For the best picture nominees, I've seen only Oppenheimer, which, while flawed in its structure, was still a brutally tense viewing experience that altogether culminated in a fantastic movie.
I want to see Killers of the Flower Moon as soon as it's available on AppleTV. I'll eventually get around to seeing Barbie, but it's been on Max for a few weeks now and I've yet to find the time or interest to actually watch it. Same for The Holdovers on Hulu.
American Fiction and Anatomy of a Fall both interest me as movies I'd probably watch when they hit streaming services. The Zone of Interest is one of those movies that's like Schindler's List, where I know I'll want to watch it, but it's a hard movie to really settle in for given the heavy subject matter.
As for Maestro, Past Lives, and Poor Things, I honestly doubt I'll watch them. Just no interest on my end.

The complete snubbing for The Iron Claw absolutely annoys me. And it can’t be blamed on being “released too late”, as films released around the same time as it got nominated as well! Damn. I was hoping Godzilla Minus One would at least be up for Best International Feature Film. I thought it was that good at least - That being said I haven't seen any of the other movies up in that category so who am I to judge, maybe they are just that good! Heck, despite 2023 being a banner year for me going back to the theatres I have seen exactly zero of the movies listed in the major categories... Godzilla unfortunately apparently missed the cutoff date for submission into qualification.

I just watched May December a few days ago and thought Charles Melton definitely and maybe Portman and Moore too were worthy of nominations. Seems like original screenplay is all they're up for though.
I've never particularly been a big fan of DiCaprio. Thought he was fine in The Revenant but mostly won because he's a big name who had never won before. I thought he was fantastic in Killers of the Flower Moon though and delivered a career best. I thought he could win best actor so him not even being nominated is shocking to me. In a movie full of great performances I thought his stood out. I'd be happy for Scorsese, Gladstone or De Niro to win their categories.

The Holdovers, Oppenheimer and Barbie are all excellent, but I have to go with American Fiction. It's a biting satire, a family drama, a romantic comedy and Mrs. Doubtfire all rolled into one. Absolutely brilliant.
Also, The Boy and the Heron is an instant masterpiece. Just throwing that out there.

I automatically associate Gosling with Drive and La La Land whenever I see him, but I’m pretty certain he’s Ken to much of the zeitgeist now. I've always associated him as being an ABSOLUTE liability at cornerback. (Remember The Titans) LOL

Only seen Oppenheimer and The Holdovers from the big nominees but well deserved nominations for all. Rooting for Randolph and RDJ to win. Rooting for Cillian but Giamatti winning wouldn’t be a travesty. Still wanna see Killers of the Flower Moon Finally saw The Holdovers a week or two ago. I really enjoyed it and that Giamatti was excellent as usual.

It might not be for directing or acting, but they did get nominated for writing and producing, respectively. It’s not like they didn’t get anything.

First ever nomination for a Godzilla movie.
I didn’t see Barbie so I have no dog in that fight. I haven’t seen any of the five women nominated for Best Actress (which seems a lock for Stone anyway)…and the only director whose movie I saw was Nolan. But I will say the only buzz I ever heard that felt nomination worthy was Gosling and Ferrera…and screenplay and picture obviously. I never heard Robbie was that strong a contender in her category. Gerwig obviously stronger since the movie was one of 10 nominees…but that category is a crapshoot. Nolan didn’t pull down a nomination for Inception…an original movie that made over 800 million, shot on location in multiple countries and was almost literally about directing. You just never know.
All that said…Go Go Godzilla. Even if I have a bit of a hard time believing Hollywood will give the award to a movie whose visual effect cost clowns their system

Seeing the Godzilla crew react to their nomination makes me hope they win. Cool stuff.

Not to point out the obvious but it’s 5 nominations out of a pool split in less than half since it was moved to adapted screenplay because…I guess Barbie exists. And I guess Leonard Bernstein didn’t?

Gladstone is the current favorite, (edit: at the time of writing, now odds have it as a dead heat lol) although I expect Poor Things momentum to build Stone quite a bit,

There's no defending Gerwig not getting a Best Director. Artistically, I don't see how what she achieved is anything short of absolutely mastery of the medium. The style, the pacing, what she brought out of the actors, the world she created even the nod to classic cinema that the academy usually adores - on top of that the impact of being *the* event movie of the year that did so much for the industry over the summer - absolutely none of that happens without Gerwig. That kind of on-screen-to-real-life phenomenon transcends on-screen direction. Like James Cameron with Avatar or Spielberg with Jurassic Park.
Robbie definitely deserved a best actress nod too. As for "Best Adapted Screenplay" - what the f*** is is adapted from? I get that potential nominees are submitted for consideration based on what they think they're most likely to win, but goddamn.
Gerwig/Robbie's snubbing just shows how deep the Academy's misogyny goes. Additionally, I hate how this has now framed the Best Original Song category, creating "I'm Just Ken" vs "What Was I Made For" in the discourse pitting 'Barbie' reception interpretations against itself and making the equally great other nominees seem like a further indictment if they win. The Jon Batiste/Dan Wilson song could walk away with it and, while I lean Eilish, I think it would be a deserving win - I just hate to see it in this kind of shadow.

Margot leading the biggest movie of the year and not getting a nomination is stunning I wouldn’t say so. I can’t remember the last time the lead in the biggest film of the year was nominated.
