It isn't so much that Margot didn't get a best actress nomination that bothers me because truthfully, she wasn't that great in it. It's a damn good movie but I don't really feel like anyone in it deserved an acting nomination.
It is America Ferrera getting one while Margot didn't in another category. That was disney channel tier acting by America, there is nooooooooooooooooooo f***ing shot she should've been nominated and then Margot isn't somewhere.

She was the weak point of the movie, I felt her big Barbie analogy was kind of on-the-nose. Like they were trying to go for a “Charlie Chaplin Great Dictator” moment directly to the audience. There’s a way to do that kind of pick-up monologue without it feeling so hammered.

When I think of Best Actress, I think of a transcendent performance that you'll remember in 15 years. Robie was very good in it, but by no means do I think she was the best of the best in 2023

Like, there is no big anti-Barbie conspiracy. The Ben Shapiros and outrage channels complaining about it are outliers, it’s widely been praised across the board for its look at gender roles. I see more articles with Barbie fans moaning about the Barbie-hating grumps and pointing them out. I view Barbie as the Top Gun Maverick of last year. (Ultra popular movie that gets a BP nomination but shut out of directing and main actor categories.) If there was a conspiracy "what I was made for" wouldn't get the nod and Barbie wouldn't be in the BP nomination.
Yeah, the movie doesn't stand a chance in any of their categories aside from maybe Costume Design or Production Design. America's Best Supporting Actress nom is a complete and utter joke as well, literally nominated for one Oscar Bait clip which gives me shades of this:
As for Margot Robbie, she didn't stand a chance in winning as it were, not when you've got killer performances put in by Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone (both of whom won Golden Globes in their respective 'Best Actress' categories).

yeah if there's anything that I wanted taken from my post, it is that Ferrera's performance was rat ass and I cannot believe she was nominated or even considered.

It’s a shame Dominic Sessa didn’t get a lot of awards love, he really shined with Giamatti and Randolph.

Like, I loved the Barbie movie but Ferrera was easily the weakest of the major roles in terms of acting. Like if I had to nominate someone from that category in the role, it'd be Rhea Perlman, Ariana Greenblatt, or even Kate McKinnon. Gosling definitely deserved his Best Actor nom though.
I get why Robbie didn't get nominated because Best Actress is a loaded field this year. But I do think Gerwig got snubbed for Director even if she got a compensatory nomination for Adapted Screenplay.

i'm like 90% sure none of them paid attention to the movie but saw the speech from Ferrera and went for it any of those 3 would be better

Don't care for the Oscars but since this is the most relevant thread regarding the year's best movies; I just got back from seeing Poor Things and The Zone of Interest.
ZOE is one of the most interesting directions a movie on the subject could do. It's a fascinating one-time watch given the pacing and lack of any conflict. The banality is the point and kudos on them going all the way with it.
Poor Things is one of my favorite movies of the past 10 years. It's SO refreshing to see a film like this use its zany art direction and tone in service of a story and characters instead of a replacement for both. This ties Zodiac for Ruffalo's best performance and is definitely Emma Stone's.
Ranking what I've seen:
1) Killers of the Flower Moon 2) Poor Things 3) Godzilla Minus One 4) Oppenheimer 5) Iron Claw 6) The Zone of Interest

Margot leading the biggest movie of the year and not getting a nomination is stunning It's by far and away the most nominated comedy in Oscars history. Comedies have never performed well and are almost never nominated for anything This weird PR campaign going along with it is just weird and based on people picking and choosing data points to be mad about Honestly, Margot getting a nomination would be a huge slap in the face to the actresses who actually have to study their craft. Also, if success=automatic nomination, Arnold Schwarzenegger would have like 10 Oscars right now.

There’s some connection and historians will need to examine it between the shit that’s going on in the world and and 20 years of nothing but comic book movies and screaming Barbie got snubbed that lead us to this point.
I think it’s gonna wind up as “The populace thought a f***ing Barbie movie was a deep meditation on the human condition and that’s why…” well what’s about to happen happened.

Messi the dog from Anatomy of the Fall made it to the Oscars!
They’re adding a new category next year, Best Casting. Basically best Casting Director.
Da'Vine Joy Randolph Wins Best Supporting Actress for her part in The Holdovers.

Of all the films nominated over all the catigories i only saw 2 films. Oppenheimer and Spider-Man. I did want to see Poor Things but the timing never worked out. Might now that it's on Disney+ because i like Emma Stone and the film lools weird as hell.
