With this and Hi-Fi Rush almost definitely coming to PS5/Switch it feels like Microsoft is done with exclusivity for the most part. I get that it got a muted response after launch but Starfield should still be one of Xbox's crown jewels. Is the goal at this point to make the next Xbox a gamepass machine with hopes that people will still buy it based on paying $10 a month for everything? Edit: Edit:

If true, rough news for folks that bought an Xbox just for the game. Feels like a white flag moment but who knows, maybe they’re just saying screw it since the game didn’t really live up to the hype.

Given the struggles of Xbox in the market these last 10 years (arguably never recovering from the terrible stumble they had early with the 7th generation) a slow move towards third party/game pass emphasis makes sense. Sony's taken a commanding lead in the AAA scene and Nintendo makes their money away from the hardware arms race, and Microsoft's failed the effectively find a place for its console as a result.
It's sad that what has me most excited is the possibility of Rare Replay on Switch, but we'll see.

What's always hurt Xbox, even when the consoles have performed well in North America and Europe, is that Japan is DOA as a market for the brand. That's a huge disadvantage compared to Playstation and Nintendo consoles. Granted, I think the only thing that can really help Bethesda Studios (strictly as a developer, so not counting their published games like Dishonored) is for Todd Howard to step down and get some new, fresh blood at the top. They've been coasting on Skyrim for over a decade and none of the studio's output since has really been that great. They've been lapped by other developers making much better open world games AND far better RPG's. Like you compare the characters and storylines in Starfield to Baldur's Gate 3 and it's just embarrassing how much the BethSoft approach is outclassed.
And get some actual good QA so your games aren't buggy messes at launch.

That's actually another question, games like OD and Hellblade 2 are probably going to be AAA Cinematic style games that Sony tends to make. Does MS keep those to draw in the Sony crowd or do they port them for the obvious sales.

Lot of people elsewhere are being really pissy about, "How dare other people get my exclusives?!" when, like, the more accessible something is the better, it being on other consoles isn't taking it from you, and you still got to play it before other people.

Microsoft had a chance, the 360 and PS3 were neck and neck, but like you said the disaster that was the X-Bone buildup and launch sunk them. Sony killed them just by saying there were no restrictions on used games and that you could share games with friends. Even during supply chain issues when you couldn't find a PS5 on shelves, you could find X-Box Series X/S without an issue. One beyond stupid decision sunk Microsoft's hopes of competing with Sony in the console market.

I mean Xbox didn't particularly put any hype into their Xbox Series line... mainly focusing on the GAme Pass over the consoles.

I get a fair bit of use out of my Series S but I've already kind of committed to the idea that whatever Microsoft's next console is there's no way I'm buying it. Between some of the reports about what they're wanting to do with it (basically trying to do the initial One stuff again) and them not really having any exclusives I at all care about, it just kind of is clearly not for me. Actually planning to let my Gamepass run out in August because other than for the slog that is Rewards points achievement stuff I virtually never use it, since just sampling games at random is very firmly just not my style.
Honestly not even sure why I'm still doing the Rewards stuff besides habit. I've got like $30 worth of points sitting at the moment and have no clue what I'm going to use them on, and my last like $50 worth I just used for Amazon gift cards so I could trade them with a friend for cash.

I'm intrigued by giving Starfield a try, so I am happy for this. Plus I assume it means the next Fallout game will also be cross platform eventually. And I love the Fallout series.

I can see MS doing this... if there's a Gamepass subscription attached to it.

Okay, as an Xbox owner, when do I get Spider-Man and God of War? How about Breath of the Wild? Not happening? Those are old games, their primary audiences played them years ago. Exclusives suck all around, but one company giving them up without the others following suit just means one group of players get shit on.

I think Starfield has hurt XBox. It was supposed to be their huge exclusive that would close the gap, and players were saying "Don't worry, the game gets good and fun about 20 hours in." It can't take that long for a game to get good and fun. The first chapter of RDR2 is considered a slog, and that takes a couple of hours.

Sweet the PS5 community can have as much fun watching redundant and frequent loading screens to walk on empty planets as XBOX users did

I've personally sunk about 275 hours into Starfield so far, and I'm only about six or seven missions done with the main storyline.
It is very much my jam, what suits my mindset, lets me zen out and complete tasks. But it's not for everyone, it's like the world's largest puddle, very very wide but not deep. And the idea it was going to be a killer app was always just marketing hype in my eyes.
I've never liked exclusivity deals either. It was way back in 1997 when I felt that way, when I couldn't play Tomb Raider II because I had the wrong console, and I've not seen anything to change my mind all these years later. There are some excellent games that I've missed completely out on playing myself, because I can't afford to go buying multiple systems.
Same reason I always want multiplayer games to be cross-platform. More players the better.
As for this, I dunno what the Microsoft plan is. I know I love Gamepass and being able to continue my same profile (and access to same games) across my 360 all the way up to my Xbox Series X, now. So I'd want to continue with whatever their next console is, but, that's a way off and I'll cross that bridge when it comes to it.

I think Gamepass is the "killer exclusive" for XBox this generation. I know PS finally came out with Plus, but I don't think it's the same. I'm happy that PS gamers will get to experience Starfield (assuming this is true) as I really enjoy it. Maybe, eventually, PS will return the favor (Spider-Man please).... yeah, I know, wishful thinking.
