Even if the overall intention is to get out of the hardware market eventually they're never going to say that because it'd completely put a bullet in the software sales in the meantime.

I can see an Xbox handheld basically being more like a Steamdeck than a dedicated console to directly compete with the Switch line.

Kind of half-listening to the podcast and the fact that one of the first things they do is, "We feel like in five or ten years exclusivity isn't really going to be a thing any more," seems like a dead giveaway what direction they're trending in even if they don't want to actually say it yet.
Edit: Current state of things seems to basically be, "No major updates at this time, we're going to keep moving as planned." Not quite the reassurance it could've been but also kind of definitively shooting down a lot of the major doomposting at least in the short term.

Honestly sounds about right. Exclusivity (as far as it pertains to Xbox vs. PlayStation) only serves as an incentive to get people to buy your hardware, and that's generally a one-time sale only. With the cost of developing games getting ever more expensive, why limit your sales potential? Doubly so in Microsoft's case, given their smaller market share. It does, of course, run the risk of impacting hardware sales, but how many people actually buy a console because of exclusive games compared to other factors, like brand loyalty or preferring one system over another.

True. Nintendo's going to Nintendo but outside of that it is kind of a lesser concern, especially for someone like Microsoft who's firmly losing that particular war anyway.

Nintendo has pretty firmly settled in its "not technologically as impressive but a lot more affordable compared to Sony and MS" niche as long as they don't anything dumb with the next console as they did with the Wii U. Still sucks for third party ports but then no one really buys a Nintendo console for third party ports of other systems' AAA games.

Yeah, Nintendo always has something other than exclusivity to trade on, and I don't see that changing. I don't see Sony bringing their first party exclusives to other consoles but I don't see them throwing big money at third-party exclusives again either.

So much for that. At the very least HiFi Rush is definitely coming. That and Ori were the two Xbox games I'm actually interested in, so yay.

I just want a good, single player pirate game--Red Dead 2 but set in pirates.
