This was brought up in the Kevin Owens Wrestlemania main event thread, so I want to see what everyone thinks.
Since Wrestlemania 36, we've had two night events.
Here are all the Saturday Main Events:
Wrestlemania 36: AJ Styles vs. Undertaker Wrestlemania 37: Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair Wrestlemania 38: Kevin Owens vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin Wrestlemania 39: Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn vs. The Usos
WWE has definitely told us over and over that these are considered "main events" of Wrestlemania that year, even thought it is Night 1 on Saturday.
Some see the true main event as still Night 2 to close out the weekend.
Here are all the Sunday Main Events:
Wrestlemania 36: Drew McIntyre vs. Brock Lesnar Wrestlemania 37: Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Edge Wrestlemania 38: Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar Wrestlemania 39: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes
So here they are lined up side by side.
Does Saturday count to you as a Wrestlemania main event?

yep. it's the main event of the night.
makes more sense than having a two main events of a single night.

Nope. There is only one main event, and it's the match that goes on last on the last day.
And holy f*** seeing Roman Reigns, a heel, go over in three straight WM is depressing as hell.

It's the main event of the night, but not the main event of Wrestlemania. If we went back to the super long single night shows, those night 1 main events would not be going on last.

Yes. You can buy a ticket to just Night 1. It’s a main event.

At what point did the mindset shift from the main event simply being “the most important match” to “the ONLY important match, and literally every other match is therefore non-essential and a waste of my precious time”?

Absolutely
I remember at the time it happened, WWE and other media mentioned something along the lines of Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair being the first black Woman to main event Wrestlemania, and that match was night 1
And I remember last years Owens/Sami Vs Usos match being considered a wrestlemania main event
So yeah, night 1 definitely counts as a main event and it’s absolutely ridiculous to think other wise, you’d just be undermining all the wrestler’s accomplishments and impact that competed in those matches

It's not like you buy a ticket for night 2 and they throw in a free ticket to night 1. Night 1 is its own show that tens of thousands of people specifically pay to go to. In fact I think it was 2022 when night 1 sold even more tickets than night 2. And every year they're normally within 1k of each other. It's not like everyone flocks to one night and ignores the other. They're both huge.
Being the last match on a show that has 50-70k paying fans automatically means it's in the top 0.1% of biggest shows ever so it seems crazy to me not to consider it a main event. If it was one long 24 hour show then yeah you only count the final match at the end but it's two different shows. One show ends, people go home then there's another show the next night. There's a festival here every year that gets huge bands/acts. It's usually either 2 or 3 nights. Each night has its own headliner. No one says there's only one and the other one/two don't count. The tickets for each night are the same price.
And if it's not a real main event why were Bianca and Sasha crying as the bell rang for their match? Why were Sami & KO so emotional at the end last year? Would they have reacted like that main eventing Payback or Fastlane? Why were fans so enraged when there was that brief rumor last year that Charlotte/Rhea might main event night 1 over Sami. If it's not actually a main event then why would Sami and his fans care so much? It's already happening this year too. You have Becky/Rhea and IYO/Bayley stans arguing over which would go on last if the women main event. But if it's not actually a "main event" then why would it be so important anyway?

Wrestlemania Day One is its own show that has its own main event. It's a phrase that has a meaning in combat sports, and that meaning isn't vibes.

Yes. However main eventing either night means less than when there was just the one show. It's similar to having multiple world titles in that regard.
And damn for my tastes those night 1 matches blow night 2 out the water. Although that'll almost certainly change this year.

Yes. They had a "Double Main Event" as far back as WM VIII, in 1992. That was 32 years ago

Wasn’t there a Mania where they had four main events? The one with Hogan vs Vince?

Around the same time they let HHH start cutting those "If you're not competing for the top title, you shouldn't even be in this business" promos.

So ignoring the semantics about "the mainevent " the WWE has done a good job making night 1 main events feel like a big deal so it lessens this stigma how much their might still be

It isn't, but there's still only one main event of WrestleMania and it's the match that goes on last. Incidentally there have been plenty of unmemorable main events, and plenty of iconic matches that weren't the main event.

Seems completely arbitrary and stupid for it not to. It's still headlining a show that tens of thousands of people are in attendance for and it's not like only the last act on the last day at a music festival counts.
