I don't think Butcher was a draw. He clearly lost the match.

When the owner of a company focuses on revenue over profit you know they are probably operating at a loss, which can be fine if trending the right way.
We have no idea if AEW is trending that way but from the noise TK makes it seems his hat is hung on this new TV rights deal swinging AEW into profitability. For the record I hope it does, competition is good for the wrestlers, fans, staff etc.
The ratings won't be the only metric that new rights deal rests on it seems, going off a post earlier in this thread quoting WBD, but trending down year on year (someone correct me if I'm wrong) will I expect weaken Tony's negotiating hand somewhat. Unless WBD or other interested parties are absolutely useless at negotiation.
With all that said from the outside looking in I do get a more positive vibe towards the on screen product ATM, the new signings seem to have added a freshness and I have been tempted to check back in. Whilst the data may not show it perhaps it is this change which indicates the beginning of a change in momentum. We shall see.
I feel like this stream of consciousness might come off more like a Mothman ratings post 🤣
Also I thought the initial posts about Butcher attracting casual fans were a joke tbh.

Unless WBD or other interested parties are absolutely useless at negotiation. So this is the big question, and I don't know if the answer is publicly available: is it trending down year on year relative to the rest of the TV landscape? Something I've kept in mind since AEW started and the first ratings came in was that, based on general TV trends that were known in pre-AEW discussions of WWE, ratings for TV in general have been trending downward. My attitude was always that those numbers were going to shrink even if AEW did nothing wrong. This is why I've always put more stock in the top ten position on cable than on the total number of viewers, but that information is less readily available these days. 750,000 viewers isn't a satisfyingly high number, but if it's #1 on the night, or #3 to things it's obviously not going to beat, then it's probably the best number possible.

Should be noted, for all the talk of ratings being down year by year, WBD put out a press release saying they had a " banner year", especially talking about how many times they were in the top 10 of programming for the demos.

For the record, Meltzer has noted that AEW has been regularly placing higher on the cable charts year over year even with declines in viewership. Wrestling across the board is doing very well in the overall TV landscape.

No, you and I are definitely talking about different types of guy I don’t think so. I just think you generally don’t like what I have to say and that’s okay. But what I mean is the the type of fan that will stay tuned when they like something but isn’t appointment viewing Nah man I'm not gonna waste wind on this anymore. If I can't even get the like room temperature good faith of you believing me when I say we have an actual disagreement and that I'm just being contrarian instead, then there's no point. I laid out where our disagreements on casual fans lie, you're the one choosing to pretend otherwise. I will concede that this post is one where I don't like what you have to say, but in a special, second meaning.

To go in a different direction. Good lord at that ratings drop for Jericho/Hook. There is something up when it comes to Jericho. Fozzy might need to go on tour for a while. Honestly, this is the discussion we really should be having. Jericho, especially during the Full Sale year, used to be the go to for getting strong ratings and demos so much so it became a bit on the shows. Now he’s actually turning people away and making them come back after he’s gone. We can debate until we’re blue in the face about the Hausman effect or if it’s something more substantial but the fact is; dude needs to leave and get a refresh and it’s weird that he’d be the last person to realize that considering one of the reasons he’s still on national TV is because of that reason. Jericho has been on Dynamite just about every single week for all the years Dynamite has been on. Most people have pretty much seen it all from him, and he’s quickly reaching the point of being Mick Foley post 2002. Like yes, you’re fighting a legend like Mick, and no disrespect to the guy, but it’s a foregone conclusion you’re winning against a dude who’s irrelevant, old, and loses all the time.

And again, that feels strange to the guy because, well, the reason his 2008 comeback worked and his suited heel stuff worked and his "List of Jericho" stuff worked was because he never stayed long enough to get stale and knew when it was time to go and be missed. Like, this isn't the era where AEW only had The Elite, Moxley, Orange Cassidy and PAC to build a brand around, they just signed the three biggest free agents possible outside of WWE doing a mass cull, picked up Danielson, Cole, White, Shibata and Strickland on the way and many of them have been shown to have some value in terms of supporting the company. Heck, someone pitched he go to CMLL if he wanted to wrestle because it does mean a lot to Mexican talent to wrestle Jericho, especially if this Visa thing hinders the ability to get some talent for Forbidden Door.

I mean, all this talk about AEW ratings being down year-to-year. Looked up something because I saw it posted elsewhere and wanted to compare myself. Looks to me, and it's just one source and I really should be working and not researching ratings but I was curious, like it isn't just AEW. Just comparing Raw from 2023 this time last year to this year, and honestly it looks they're down overall from last year as well. www.gerweck.net/tv-ratings/2023-tv-ratings/ - 2023 www.gerweck.net/tv-ratings/2024-tv-ratings/ - 2024 For the most part Smackdown seems to be better in most cases, but they've also leaned on The Rock for Smackdown quite a bit this year and Smackdown isn't on cable, so that might have something to do with it. Point being, just from a rather small sample size, I'd hazard a guess this is mostly due to cable viewership going down year-to-year as has been the case for awhile.

That's the worst part of these ratings threads since Showbuzz stopped posting their charts: most weeks there's a complete lack of context for where Dynamite ranks in demo/viewership relative to the rest of the cable landscape.

Not for nothing, but back years ago on the WWE board, I would say WWE was turning off fans and needed to change course over what would be year-on-year losses equal to or exceeding Dynamite's current average weekly viewership. We're getting Tony Khan liquidation talk over what is sometimes a low five digit drop from the year before.

To engage on the "ratings" issue. What part of March Madness are people forgetting? It's one of the most fun, chaotic tourneys in the world. We had a dude who looks like a future accountant completely wipe out a bunch of NBA prospects in Kentucky. No sport can match that level of chaos. Not even MMA or wrestling. Tourney games started Thursday not Wednesday, at least I know my bracket had to be locked on Thursday.

WWE’s viewership has trended younger over the last year or so and while they were going up in demo and viewership for a bit of time in 2023, they’re not going down in viewership year over year but still up in the demo.

I will concede that this post is one where I don't like what you have to say, but in a special, second meaning. Seriously, how many threads are we going to have this argument about casual fans, present very logical thinking points as to what a casual fan is and what some people try and make a "casual fan" out to be a strawman for their own opinions, be basically told "Ok well I don't believe you" and rinse and repeat the next ratings thread that doesn't get hit the number some people want or expect it to? If you want reasonable discussion about this topic straight up ignoring the posters who are giving you the information about said topic and choosing to believe what you want not once but like every thread feels like the exact opposite of good faith. Especially when it ends with "Idk I think you just hate what I have to say" like... what?? Casual fans exist, and imaginary casual fans who happen to hate the same thing the person presenting the argument hate to drive home the point the thing "definitely sucks" both exist and I don't know why that's so hard to believe...

Money wise, even if the new TV deal didn’t make AEW profitable, the company is not in any danger given the amount of money that Tony Khan is worth and his love for wrestling.
