AND THE MCMAHONS STILL WONDER WHY NO ONE TAKES THEIR COMPANY SERIOUSLY?
by Doug Brown @ 10:45:00 AM on 1/2/2007
Kevin Federline pinned John Cena on Raw last night. I still can't believe I just typed that sentence. A guy, whose only claim to fame is that he got lucky enough to marry Brittney Spears and screwed it up enough that she is divorcing him, beat the WWE Champion in the middle of the ring. Yes, Umaga did the bulk of the work, but the end result is the same, Cena, who they've been building their flagship show around, lost to a celebrity husband rather than an athlete or even an actual celebrity. No one will remember that he FUed him at the end of the night, but I guarantee you folks will remember pinfall at the beginning. I'm sure there were many TV sets that were turned off right after the match happened.
It is not the first time that a non-wrestler has beaten a wrestler. Stephanie McMahon holds pinfall victories over the Rock, Test, and Jeff Jarrett. Jim Ross has victories over William Regal in his home state of Oklahoma and Triple H in Madison Square Garden. Not that I agreed with any of those "creative" decisions either, but at least to Stephanie and J.R.'s credit, they are actually in the wrestling business.
The ultimate comparison is when David Arquette won the WCW World Title. Arquette pinned Eric Bischoff in a tag team match to win the belt. To Arquette's credit, he proved to be a standup guy, by donating all the money he made from wrestling to the families of Owen Hart and Brian Pillman. The idea behind Arquette winning the belt was much the same as I'm sure the idea was with Federline beating Cena. It was to bring in publicity to the company, and in Vince's mind all publicity is good publicity. The only problem is that people aren't laughing with him, this morning they are laughing at him.
They had been doing such a good job of building up New Year's Revolution. Unlike December to Dismember, they've actually announced matches in advance and built them up (what a concept). Then they had to have a match that no one really wanted to see. Comedian like Jay Leno had already been discussing what a bad joke on the public this is. WWE was a laughingstock before the match, and I imagine they are an even bigger laughingstock afterwards. There was only one way that the Cena-Federline match should have gone in order for the company to save face, and that is Cena should have squashed Federline and pinned him clean in less than 60 seconds. Instead, Vince has created another black-eye for the industry to go right up there on the mantle next to Katie Vick, Al Wilson, the Gobbledygooker, HLA, the Michael Richards and George Bush impersonators shouting racial slurs, Muhammed Hussan, and Big Dick Johnson.
What kills me is that no one has the guts in to stand up and say, "Vince, this is a bad idea." Well, there used to be one guy, but he got sent home again. All that is left now are Vince, Stephanie, and their yes-men. It is just amazing to see the guy that helped build wrestling into an international empire is now so completely out of touch with the fan base. For instance, Mickie James and Victoria have been really working their butts off having good confronations and matches leading into the pay-per-view. They have been proving that beautiful women can have good matches also. What does Vince do? He sends John Laurinitis out to find 15-20 more bikini models to sign to contracts. The Hardys, MNM, Paul London and Brian Kendrick, and the Blue Bloods tore the house down at Armageddon. What does Vince do? He sends the former Dynamic Dude out to find more muscle bound goons that can barely move much less wrestle.
Sadly, until someone else takes a stand, this stuff is going to keep happening. I know it is Vince's company, and he can do with it as he pleases. I just wish that someone would tell him straight to his face the reality of the situation. He is out of touch with the audience, he is sabotaging his own company, and after last night's Raw, he should probably be fitted for a straight jacket.
