Probably used to do something back in the day, but either evolution or modern medicine kind of made it obsolete somehow. But yeah if it's so dangerous, why don't people just take it out earlier in life? like when you go to the doctor/dentist and for some reason tells you to take the tonsils or wisdom teeth out "just in case". Taking out an appendix is a far more complicated, costly, and dangerous procedure, you can't just open your mouth and have the doctor reach it like tonsils. Post-surgical infections is almost as serious now as it was before the age of antibiotics. Unfortunately, hospitals are the breeding grounds for resistant bacteria. You are not too likely to get resistant infections elsewhere.

Actually, there is a new method of removing the appendix that is quick easy and has you out of the hospital in 3 days, with little to no scarring. That doesn't matter in this case mind you, as it only applies to inflamed appendix not ruptured. They literally would have had to do a 'mop up' operation on his insides.
The appendix itself is a poison/bacteria generator. The human body gains resistances and immunities through exposure, and the appendix basically gives the body bacteria it needs for a working immune system. The reason why it can be removed with little to know problems in today's society is because most of the bacteria it generates is usually obtained from contact with other humans.
When it ruptures there's real dangers are infection and poisoning, ESPECIALLY if you have an ulcer as the poisions and bacteria can enter the stomach and then the blood stream. I really hope he's going to be okay but he's going to be hurting for a while.

This same thing actually happened to my dad when he was younger... his appendix burst, but since it just felt like bad gas, he didn't think a lot of it. 24 hours later, he wasn't getting any better and went into the hospital just before it could've gotten fatal.

Why do we have an appendix? What is the point of having an organ who's only function is to burst and suddenly kill me? Helps with your stomach or something. They just recently discovered what it was for, like, in the past 2 or 3 months. Check the news on-line somewhere, it'll say.

I read the same thing a while back. it had to do with the bacterial process the previous poster was talking about too. I think what it does is generates bacteria to help protect the stomach from infection. I have not had mine removed yet. does anyone know if it is something like chicken pox, where everyone gets it eventually, or can you go through life with an appendix and not have it cause problems? is there anything i should be doing to keep it from bursting? something i should be eating or not eating?

I'm sure you'll be fine. It doesn't explode on most people.

Luckily a bad appendix is not hard to spot. It's always a severe pain in the lower right abdomen. My right or yours

My appendix burst when I was about 13. I was on a school tour in Germany, and I didn't speak ANY German, so spending two weeks in a hospital there was a hoot. I had the guy in the bed next to me read me the menus and stuff every day. If he happens to be a wrestling fan and on these boards, thanks again Richard!
But yeah, that can get pretty serious. Get better soon Matt.

About a little over 5 years ago, I had my appendix burst, apparently, right after the surgery.

I'd say 1 month on his recovery. That would be plenty sensible, because you're looking at about a week or two in the hospital to get the toxins out of his system, plus healing time for the scar.
