Well, lets start handicapping these races....one at a time. BEST VISUAL FX "The Golden Compass" "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" "Transformers" Well, GOLDEN COMPASS got lost in theatres so it won't win. The problem with PIRATES is that it won the same prize last year, and many will argue that its the same effects again*. Of course, that never did stop LOTR.... But as the box-office champ over the summer, TRANSFORMERS will win...and with 300 snubbed, TF's win is guaranteed. Ill respond one at a time with my picks. Im still going Pirates, even though it won last year. No real reason, but I just don't like transformers to win it.

Before they announce the winner for best animation picture, matt groening should walk on stage and just take the oscar and make a speech about how he's finally won ala owen hart in the 'slammys'. Day-Lewis and Bardem are locks to win their category. I don't see how they will lose it. Ben Foster was snubbed for his role in "3:10 to Yuma', he was insanely awesome. He better watch out though, he needs to branch out and do something else because for the last 4 years he's been playing the same psycho role. Hell, last year on "My name is earl' he played it again. I fear for him getting type-casted. He in my opinion is the new Sean Penn. Hey rra, what the hell happened to Collin Farrell? I remember for a good 5 year Span he was everywhere, hell pacino called him 'the best actor of his generation', though I would take that with a grain of salt because it came from pacino now who in my opinion is a shell of himself, had it come from pacino 20 years ago it would mean more. Forster was on my personal ballot, though the other nominees are well deserving. Someone always gets the shaft... Bardem is a LOCK to win BS Actor, and Lewis probably for Actor. I say "Probably" because he was supposed to win for GANGS OF NEW YORK, and instead he got in a deadlock with Nicholson, which allowed Adrien Brody to win. But otherwise, yeah I agree that DDL will win Best Actor. Most of these categories, save for some of the technicals*, you can already tell who will win. What happened to Collin Farrell? Rehab. Though in retrospect, Pacino's successor aint him. I like Farrell, but in watching DONNIE BRASCO again the other day, its in retrospect a true "passing of the torch" from Pacino to Depp. Hell, Depp is like Pacino was for many years.....regular Oscar nods, but no wins. *=Notice that 300 got slaughtered? I still say to this day that day-lewis should've won for gangs, that performance was insane. I heard that 'there will be blood' it's raised up 100X. I'll see it eventually when it comes to dvd in a couple of months. Bff...adrian brody, has an actor done less with so much talent. Opps....sorry I forgot about mickey rourke. I predict next year, benicio del-toro will win an oscar for 'guerilla' whenever that finally gets released...it's been filming for a while now. I nominate farrell as the new mickey rourke. Though, the thing is now the women who loved farrell because of his ways have moved on to johnny depp and johnny ain't going nowhere. I'd rather be the deniro's successor, who would you say is in that role right now? I would say day-lewis but he's in a world all his own the new klaus kinski.

I'm not rra, but I know that Farrell's got a couple of films coming out this year which, I think, should spring him back up there. Watch this space, I say.

I haven't seen Michael Clayton so I'm just asking you guys: Is it really even THAT good, or is this just another case of throwing nominations at a film with one of Hollywood's darlings (George Clooney) for the sake of it?

I thought it was great. Its was in my top 10 last year. Its full of great performances and has a very good story.

I'm legit curious because while I've heard good things about it, I haven't heard GREAT things, or anything that would make me go out of my way to see it. Guess I'll see it soon enough.

I'm going to see THERE WILL BE BLOOD later today. I can't wait. For people who have saw it, how was it? Its an interesting, if not weird overall story. DDL is incredible, and Dana is very solid as well. Personally, its my favorite film of 07. I gave it a ****3/4 grade. But, im a huge mark for great singular performances, so my love of DDL as Plainview probably affects that rating.

I recently moved away from NY to the south and thus still haven't seen There Will Be Blood b/c it hasn't come around here yet. Does that irritate anyone else? When a movie is kept in very limited release, yet is up for a million awards?

All I have to say is: SURF'S UP? ? SURF'S UP? What the F*** ? I couldn't stand watching the previews for two minutes, who the hell actually saw it and voted it as one the best animated movies of the year? I didn't even see The Simpsons Movie, and I know they were royally shafted.

If Juno wins for anything, I lose faith in humanity. I don't get what the hell is so good about this movie, seriously.

The Academy deserves to get torched for including Surf's Up over Simpsons. Seriously, WTF Oh yeah, and I pretty much called No Country and Blood, as did rra. Michael Clayton is a bit of a surprise, though. Why the Juno hate? Is it considered "in" to hate on all "quirky" comedies after they become successful? (Apatow catalog, Napoleon Dynamite, etc)

If Juno wins for anything, I lose faith in humanity. I don't get what the hell is so good about this movie, seriously. What's so wrong with it? The dialogue mostly. I know that sometimes you can overlook it, but since that Diablo Cody chick who wrote it was trying to cram in as many "funny" one-liners and jokes as possible, it was something to pay attention to. Every time someone spoke, it was just another lame joke or another stupid sarcastic witty remark that had me wanting to punch people in the head every time they spoke. "Why the Juno hate? Is it considered "in" to hate on all "quirky" comedies after they become successful? (Apatow catalog, Napoleon Dynamite, etc)" No, I love quirky comedies. Judd Apatow's big two (40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up) are my favorite movies of all time. Napoleon Dynamite isn't fair because that movie isn't really that good, and was only held together because the guy spoke funny. I'm all for quirky, it just didn't resonate with me in this one.

Michael Clayton is a bit of a surprise, though. They might as well have just nominated Ratatouille on its own. It's not like anything else has a chance of winning. And didn't just about everyone call No Country and Blood?

And didn't just about everyone call No Country and Blood? Agreed on Rat, I think Simpsons should have been acknowledged, at least. It's certainly a better movie than Surf's Up (and CGI animals are rather overdone--part of the reason I'm enthusiastic about Pixar going with WALL-E). No Country and Blood was a pretty widespread pick, although Juno was supposedly a "dark horse". If Little Miss Sunshine and Sideways can get in, why not Juno?

I'm not that surprised by Juno just because of the reviews. Michael Clayton probably is the most surprising nominee for Picture, although I'm not sure what else I would have expected (edit: Maybe Eastern Promises). The nominee that surprises me the most is also the one I'm happiest about: Tommy Lee Jones for "In the Valley of Elah." I would have liked to have seen Gone Baby Gone get more than one nomination.
