I'm not that surprised by Juno just because of the reviews. Michael Clayton probably is the most surprising nominee for Picture, although I'm not sure what else I would have expected (edit: Maybe Eastern Promises). American Gangster and Sweeney Todd were heavily hyped to get noms (at least from what I remember). Both of those had pretty good Rotten Tomatoes totals, too.

I swear to all things holy, if JUNO walks away with one Academy Award, let alone with Best f***in' Picture, then I've lost all hope in humanity.
That being said, how about a round of applause to what we can now officially call: "THE ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED: NORBIT".

There's a lot of nominated films I still need to see.
But yay! for Juno for best picture, director and lead actress!
On a smaller note, yay for Surf's Up for best animated feature. I think Surf's Up is a great little film.
I am sad The Simpsons movie didn't atleast get a nomination, it wouldn't win, I'm sure Ratatouille will, but a nomination would have been nice. And even though I have yet to see There Will Be Blood, I feel for Paul Dano....two years in a row in Oscar movies (Little Miss Sunshine) and still no nom.
All in all though, IF IT AIRS, it will be a good race and an exciting ceremony.

I haven't seen Michael Clayton so I'm just asking you guys: Is it really even THAT good, or is this just another case of throwing nominations at a film with one of Hollywood's darlings (George Clooney) for the sake of it? Its a pretty good drama with good acting from Clooney, Wilkinson, and Swinton. The ending rocks. "You're so f***ED." MICHAEL CLAYTON (2007) - ****

I recently moved away from NY to the south and thus still haven't seen There Will Be Blood b/c it hasn't come around here yet. Does that irritate anyone else? When a movie is kept in very limited release, yet is up for a million awards? That and I'M NOT THERE aint around these parts of East Tennessee.....so annoying and fustrating for a movie buff like me.

The Academy deserves to get torched for including Surf's Up over Simpsons. Seriously, WTF Oh yeah, and I pretty much called No Country and Blood, as did rra. Michael Clayton is a bit of a surprise, though. Why the Juno hate? Is it considered "in" to hate on all "quirky" comedies after they become successful? (Apatow catalog, Napoleon Dynamite, etc) Yeah, I still dont get the SIMPSONS snubbing. I figured Homer was booked because the movie was a hit last summer, and critics liked it. I guess some AMPAS (idiot) voters figured they might be voting for something that they see for free weekly.

JUNO will at least win the Original Screenplay Oscar....with Ellen Page having a REAL good shot of winning Best Actress. Of course, I haven't seen JUNO....though I really liked Jason Reitman's previous THANK YOU FOR SMOKING. And to think, the son of Ivan Reitman got an Oscar nod. As for the Make-Up Oscar....its a lousy category thats been an excuse for some bizarre-nominations and wins over the years.

I hope "No Country" doesn't win, It was decent but that's it.
The Oscar picks this year are rubbish.
Also i haven't payed attention to the Oscars in ages, i don't need awards to tell what films to like

Michael Cera is going to be type-casted, I can feel it. He's the new generation's Matthew brodrick...except with less charisma.
I would totally nail Ellen page. Hell I would totally nail Allison janney as well.
Daniel Day-Lewis seems like the most intimidating guy ever when he's in full bill the butcher/Daniel Plainview garb. I saw him without that stuff on at the critics choice awards and he seems harmless.

Johnny Depp is always getting nominated but can never pull off the win.
Doesnt look like he will get the award this year either.

Cate Blanchett has been busy with the movies. Shes gotten herself into two categories. For these other actresses to win they will have to defeat Blanchett. Shes already won one Oscar. She'll be looking for one or two this time around.
Ellen Page could pull of a win to secure an Oscar at a young page.
Wouldnt be the youngest though. Tatum won one for Paper Moon at a much younger age.
Youngsters have hope in the Oscars thanks to a win like that.

The Academy deserves to get torched for including Surf's Up over Simpsons. Seriously, WTF Simpsons was dull as dishwater. Not that Surf's Up screams Oscar, but ... really. It has nothing to do with being "in". It's called "over-hype backlash". Everybody I know keeps verbally fellating Juno like it's the greatest movie ever. Every time I see a preview, you know what I see? Saved!, with Jena Malone and Mandy Moore, minus the Christian school backdrop. For some of us, the 24/7 hype around this (and Apatow flicks and ND) just gets to be too much. Jed Shaffer ~Proudly hating Apatow/ND/Juno from Day 1.

rra, why are you here, and not reviewing Cloverfield? Or did you already do that?
Oh and Juno was alright, nothing Oscar worthy. Nothing really big about it. Just a good teen kinda comedy in an era of bad ones...

Is there anyone that believes Javier Bardem won't walk away with the statue, because I believe he's the only guaranteed winner this year.

You still haven't answered the question of why exactly Surf's Up deserved the nod over it. Hell, I could see Shrek 3 getting the nod (and I don't like Shrek much), but Surf's Up is just a strange choice that it really makes the AMPAS look weird. Giving Surf's Up a nod is like giving Open Season/The Wild a nod. Also, I think the anti-Juno thing goes with the whole "this movie is popular, therefore it sucks" Internet mantra of reviewing. Seems dangerously close to Devin Faraci's definition of "quality" if you ask me.
