As Wal-Mart put the final nail in HD-DVD's coffin............how do you all feel?
And now Blu-Ray is the LaserDisc of 2008.....can Sony sell customers on upgrading from the 11 year old DVDs?

Wasn't HD-DVD capability a selling point for the XBox360? I can't remember.

Wasn't HD-DVD capability a selling point for the XBox360? I can't remember. I don't know ... it wasn't really mentioned when I bought mine. But later on they spoke of the HD DVD add on. I bought it because it seemed to be the logical choice between the next gen systems. At least one that I could get my hands on. And I haven't been disappointed yet.

Wasn't HD-DVD capability a selling point for the XBox360? I can't remember. As others have said not really, they have an HD-DVD attachment but the games themselves are standard dvds.

Right now Blu-Ray is in the state that DVDs were when VHS was still the format of choice and DVDs were the new kids on the block. After a few years(and the PS2 being the cheapest DVD player for a while) the DVD format took off and VHS died on the side of the road. With the PS3 being the cheapest Blu-Ray players, and the PS3 looking to become a cheaper system in a year or two, Blu-Ray will expand into multiple homes and eventually DVD will be phased out in favor of Blu-Ray.

And on that day, and if the PS3 becomes $299....I'll get it. Till then, Blu-Ray doesn't interest me in the least seeing as how 99% of the DVDs I buy are older films or TV series.

If you have an HD capable television set, the difference is night and day. I got 5 free Blu-Rays with my PS3 and they all look great. I also picked up Blade Runner on Blu-Ray and had my friend bring over his copy of the movie on DVD to do a comparison and there is none. The clarity is above and beyond, darkness and contrast is amazing and, what usually gets left out of the discussion, the sound is infinitely better. Obviously not everyone's going to rush out and buy one, but unlike Laserdisc, there's no major inherent flaws with the design that leave the consumers wanting mroe or feeling put-off. If anything, Blu-Ray offers a better product in that it not only looks better, the discs are basically scratch proof.
As for MS, they were one of the major underwriters for the HD-DVD technology and were likely the ones who floated those huge payouts to studios like Dreamworks to get their movies to go exclusive.
As for Knowles, maybe Eli Roth can come over to his house and the two can stroke each other's.........egos to allow him to overcome making a jackass of himself for being a schill for a fledgling and failing product. Oh well, at least he can tell us that a D-List director whose films consists of naked chicks and torture scenes is a visionary.

Nail has been hit on the head. In two years, DVD will be where VHS was in 2000...

Also, Blu-Ray players double as upconverting DVD players. It's not like you have to throw out your DVD collection for no apparent reason. If anything, you can adopt and get a player that makes your old DVDs look better and allows you to play Blu-Ray movies.
The boxes aren't good, but they're not terrible. They have to protect the average consumer by making them markedly different from regular DVDs and the last of the dodos, the remaing HD-DVD movies that'll likely be in the bargain bin by next month (which are red instead of Blue).

Honest to God, I think I'm about done with buying dvds and such, aside from tv shows I don't care anymore. So what happened anyway, was it blu ray people pulling shit and putting everyones back against the walls if they went with HD?

And I like to think that it will only remain in the current case color until DVD gets phased out, then it will got to cases similar to the PS3 game cases(I actually like those), or go to black.

I hope with this new revelation, PS3 will announce a price drop or something(or wait until this year's e3, just like last year).

Now I can buy all these old regular dvds cheap because I will always be able to find a player somewhere if mine dies out. Just think of all these people that went out and bought the complete series of Seinfeld-this just plane sucks. Why do we need this anyway?
