The major problem is that HDTV's do not have a high concentration percentage in homes right now (I believe somewhere around 15-20%). So really, even though Blu-ray is "better" than DVD, it really doesn't matter. The average person isn't going out to buy a blu-ray player not because they know it's better, but because it requires them to spend an additional $1000-$1500 for a new TV. And don't give me "Well, there's smaller HD models that sell for $700". The average family, if they are to replace their main tv, want a big TV to replace it, not a small bedroom model.
Once HDTV's get into more homes, then Blu-Ray will have "won" the format war. As of now, they are like the AA champions as opposed to DVD as the World Series champions.
As for video games, it won't matter too much, if at all. Nintendo has a massive war chest now and could easily put out an HD Wii. Microsoft is rumored to already begun devo on a new XBox which will most likely be Blu-ray and hopefully be more developer friendly than the PS3. And Sony will have to stick with the PS3 but will continue to release 3-4 different models each year.

I'll put it this way. Anyone that bought either player early in it's life shouldn't get upset if the other wins. Even if they battle ended up being the other way around and HD-DVD won, that's what happens when you adopt early in the middle of a format war. This is exactly why I waited.

So what if the PS3 gets it's ass handed to it by the Wii and 360 as a game console, could feasibly neither format actually win?

Give it a few years, you will have to. Right now Blu-Ray is in the state that DVDs were when VHS was still the format of choice and DVDs were the new kids on the block. After a few years(and the PS2 being the cheapest DVD player for a while) the DVD format took off and VHS died on the side of the road. With the PS3 being the cheapest Blu-Ray players, and the PS3 looking to become a cheaper system in a year or two, Blu-Ray will expand into multiple homes and eventually DVD will be phased out in favor of Blu-Ray. Nail has been hit on the head. In two years, DVD will be where VHS was in 2000... ...ooh *nervous laugh*, I never actually owned a DVD player until 2003. I used VHS all the time, and while my priamry choice for pruchase is obviously DVD, VHS is still my first choice for recording.

I got an HD-DVD player when Wal-Mart was having their secret sale and it was only $100. I only have Batman Begins but I thought about getting Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean's 13. I don't really regret having the player because I got it for cheap and now it will be a collectors item. I'm gonna stick to dvd for a while and eventually when I get Blu-Ray I'll just stick to buying new releases. There's no need to replace my other dvd's. You got it for the price of an upconverting DVD player and it can still play HD-DVD's which should be discounted soon. Sounds like you got a good deal. Like the article I posted says, unless you're getting a PS3, there's no reason to buy a Blu-Ray player until October, and even then you'll probably want to wait until prices drop to a reasonable level. So that's like a whole year without Hi-def DVD's.

I dunno, I'm keeping it civil. I really don't see Pilot's hate for Sony as a company itself. From his responses it seems clear that all he really hates is the fans that gave Sony a negative image when they were on the top of the gaming world. And all I've stated is that those people are long gone...until Sony comes back to the top that is. So far everything has been civil actually. Trust me in my days of fighting in the digital trenches of the previous generation's console war I've seen and even participated in things much more out of hand that quickly degenerated into a frenzy of all caps and sentences ending in "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!" How the course of this thread goes is really all up to Pilot now. I don't really feel like threadjacking since yes, this has been mostly civil, so I'll say this. My hatred stems from two things: 1. The fan arrogance. As I said nobody "has a right" to be arrogant, especially over something that basically all boiled down to chance and gambles paying off. And I had to put up with it all through middle school and high school...starting with the PS1. Yes, the days before Sony console support rarely became such heated arguments at a lunch table. 2. Sony's arrogance itself. It seems to me that Sony has fostered this "culture of arrogance" among its fans through its behavior, through many things that have occurred but I won't mention because we all know them. I will mention one thing though, since it's not something you'd see on the news. A close friend of mine had to send her Sony Vaio laptop in for maintainence because of damage to its AC adaptor and a slightly warped keyboard causing typing issues. Other than that it worked fine. While it was there they said "we can't repair this due to water damage" sent it back, and also charged her for shipping. When she got it back it wouldn't even so much as boot. So yes, Sony broke one of their own laptops in maintenance and rather than own up to it, pinned it on my friend. And no, they never got in any sort of trouble for it. So as you can see, I find a deep problem with the way Sony has conducted business and the way that has rubbed off on their core customers. Now as to Blu-Ray, like I said I won't be supporting it much less caring because as of right now it is primarily a Sony vehicle, at least from my standpoint of someone who is heading into the videogame industry. If, come the next generation, everyone starts using Blu-Ray, then it's truly become universal and no longer a problem to me personally. Dude, you act like Sony's the only company on the planet who's customer service has screwed over a customer before. You seem to be taking it a little bit hard when someone likes Sony Playstations. I just bought it because I did my research, and it seemed like it offered more of what I wanted. I mean, it's not like people are insulting your mom here, it's just a goddamn video game system! I also thought it was funny when people (usually gamers) were talking about how Sony was going under because the PS3 sold slowly at first. Ummm... Sony's a HUGE corporation that dabbles in everything from TVs to record lables. One facet of their company not selling well wasn't going to sink the entire operation! The Sony corporation has so much money that they could've sold 12 PS3s and nobody (except the executive that got fired over it) would've batted an eye. That's just the way these places work, Microsoft's no different either. I'm not a "Sony fan". See I'm a fan of sports teams and rock bands, but I have no loyalty to any product or corporation. Sony just put out a product I thought was best for me, so I bought it. It's not a ballgame. You don't pick a console to root for. You're a consumer. Buy what's best for you. That's the only obligation we have as consumers. Not to buy something then "trash talk" everyone else that bought something else.

I still buy VHS...so I don't really care. I still RECORD on VHS, I don't buy brand new films on VHS any more. Seriously recording on DVD is too much trouble at the moment. And looks like I'll do better to wait till recordable Blu-Ray anyway......so I'ma stick wit da VHA for recording for now.

Hell you could go back further and probably say that the first was Atari v. Colleco. But for some reason, for some people, it has become like picking a sports team.

Blue Ray and DVD's in general only have about a five-ten year life left.
When you can donwload HD quality to your computer now and it will only expand then discs will die.
Odd note, HD-DVD's were cheaper to make and although not as fast on current spead had the potential to be much faster and hold more room then Blue Ray.
I think we all shot ourselves in the foot by supporting this personally.
I own both personally, the 10 HD with 2 in the box made me get an HD-DVD. I got the PS3 as my Blue Ray with my 5 Blue Rays.

I'd like to say something about that. When it was Sega v. Nintendo, I never got into a shouting match with anyone about which was better. When Sony showed up with the PS1, it became a different story, and the whole video game war became this arrogant dick-waving farce. And again, no other company ever screwed over someone i knew or me personally worse than Sony has. Hell Microsoft repaired my 360 for free, and Nintendo's never done me wrong, so I'm allowed to form that opinion about them.

I think, eventually, downloads will win out, but we're a long way off.
