Oh man! I hate those! They are pains in my ass! Especially their razor sharp claws and the ability to further mutate into a Flicker. Hey....I just noticed something. This thread has been hijacked twice. First time was turning to the inevitable focus of the console war, second time was us making Resident Evil references to the now dead HD-DVD. Oh God....I just thought of something AMAZING. What if, on Resident Evil 5, Capcom adds an unlockable side game where you play as Blu-Ray and you have to take out HD-DVD zombies? Like The Tofu Survivor from RE2 but on crack! That would be funny. I'd actually really love to see something silly like that. See I like this kind of highjacking, because we're doing it in the name of peace and fun.

How the hell did this thread turn into this? This is exactly why I didn't post my thoughts and the information I know, and managing a video store for 10 years I get and keep a lot of info on this stuff. I dunno, I'm keeping it civil. I really don't see Pilot's hate for Sony as a company itself. From his responses it seems clear that all he really hates is the fans that gave Sony a negative image when they were on the top of the gaming world. And all I've stated is that those people are long gone...until Sony comes back to the top that is. So far everything has been civil actually. Trust me in my days of fighting in the digital trenches of the previous generation's console war I've seen and even participated in things much more out of hand that quickly degenerated into a frenzy of all caps and sentences ending in "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!" How the course of this thread goes is really all up to Pilot now. I don't really feel like threadjacking since yes, this has been mostly civil, so I'll say this. My hatred stems from two things: 1. The fan arrogance. As I said nobody "has a right" to be arrogant, especially over something that basically all boiled down to chance and gambles paying off. And I had to put up with it all through middle school and high school...starting with the PS1. Yes, the days before Sony console support rarely became such heated arguments at a lunch table. 2. Sony's arrogance itself. It seems to me that Sony has fostered this "culture of arrogance" among its fans through its behavior, through many things that have occurred but I won't mention because we all know them. I will mention one thing though, since it's not something you'd see on the news. A close friend of mine had to send her Sony Vaio laptop in for maintainence because of damage to its AC adaptor and a slightly warped keyboard causing typing issues. Other than that it worked fine. While it was there they said "we can't repair this due to water damage" sent it back, and also charged her for shipping. When she got it back it wouldn't even so much as boot. So yes, Sony broke one of their own laptops in maintenance and rather than own up to it, pinned it on my friend. And no, they never got in any sort of trouble for it. So as you can see, I find a deep problem with the way Sony has conducted business and the way that has rubbed off on their core customers. Now as to Blu-Ray, like I said I won't be supporting it much less caring because as of right now it is primarily a Sony vehicle, at least from my standpoint of someone who is heading into the videogame industry. If, come the next generation, everyone starts using Blu-Ray, then it's truly become universal and no longer a problem to me personally.

Oh, yeah.....their PC support sucks ass(didn't think you'd hear a Sony fan say that, would you?). In fact I actually only support their movie and gaming divisions. Sony's music, computer, and TV divisions can rot for all I care. I've actually never met anyone who has liked Sony as a whole. Mostly only people who like either their movie, gaming, or music divisions. I actually stay away from Sony's PCs and TVs because they have a HUGE history of having bad customer support for those divisions. See, now I can see where you are coming from. That is a problem with companies that have multiple divisions, they focus all their energy on a few divisions and leave the rest to fend for themselves. And now everyone's friends again. Yay! b(^_^)d

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but how do you know for a fact that the water damage was caused by Sony? Maybe it happened during transit?

I only own about 25 HD DVDs so it's not a total wash, plus I could still watch them whenever I want.
I also managed to buy a Blu-Ray player the day that Warner made their announcement, because Best Buy was giving away 10 free movies (5 in store, 5 by mail) and also because I predicted that the free movie offers would go bye-bye. I was right.

Give it a few years, you will have to. Right now Blu-Ray is in the state that DVDs were when VHS was still the format of choice and DVDs were the new kids on the block. After a few years(and the PS2 being the cheapest DVD player for a while) the DVD format took off and VHS died on the side of the road. With the PS3 being the cheapest Blu-Ray players, and the PS3 looking to become a cheaper system in a year or two, Blu-Ray will expand into multiple homes and eventually DVD will be phased out in favor of Blu-Ray. Nail has been hit on the head. In two years, DVD will be where VHS was in 2000... I disagree thoroughly. You're saying that Blu-Ray will take over DVD in TWO YEARS? Come on, be logical. Most people don't even have HDTV's, let alone Blu-Ray players. Blu-Ray is a novel format, but most people could care less about it. Side by side, would most people pick a Blu-Ray DVD that's 30 dollars or a regular DVD for 15? With our current recession, I don't see many people buying HDTVs or Blu-Ray players for a while.

Side by side, would most people pick a Blu-Ray DVD that's 30 dollars or a regular DVD for 15? With our current recession, I don't see many people buying HDTVs or Blu-Ray players for a while. DVD will still be around, but HD is becoming widely adopted (at least in the US, which is the only market I have a clue about). The cost of HDTVs has come down substantially in recent years and it's not out of the question that there will be a huge market of people who have adopted HD to some capacity. I know not everyone is a videophile and not everyone needs to be on the cutting edge of technology, but you can get a 46" 1080p LCD TV for south of $1,000 as of today. I'd imagine it's only going to drop from there and continue on that trend (when the next gen of HD comes along and we'll be dismissing that as a fringe market). With this mass adoption of HDTVs comes the desire to push its boundaries and why Blu-Ray will likely at least enjoy a sizeable market. The costs, as they did with HDTVs will come down substantially in the next year (just like it did with DVD, where the original players were upwards of $600 and the movies cost.....wait for it.....upwards of $30). The funny thing about the American Consumer is that personal entertainment usually doesn't take a massive hit when times get hard. McDonald's gets a few more visits, but there's a trend that shows movies and the like are the last to suffer. Again, I can see why some people will pass this off and say they have no need for it, but seeing how widely HDTVs have actually become and are becoming, it seems logical, especially when Blu-Ray players double as DVD Upconverters.

So one group of evil corporations beat another group of evil corporatations, in a war that everyone admits should have never happened in the first place. Unless the Head of Sony gets to behead the head of Toshiba with a katana blade, only to find out that Lord Toshiba ended his own life in shame to restore family honor, So what? By the time HD players are selling for 30 bucks at Walgreens and play Antepodian Wrestling dics, this whole pointless debate will be years past, and technophiliacs will be boasting about how all media will soon be kept in the central Google Movies depository.

The Blu-Ray format was lauched early to compete with HD-DVD which Toshiba was ahead of the game.
Don't buy a stand alone blu-ray player just yet. You need to wait until they come out with the BD profile 2.0
How long until HD-DVD's get really cheap to clear space at Best Buy and Walmart?

Yeah, if you want a Blu-Ray player, you are best to buy a PS3. It is more easily upgraded from what I hear given the active internet connection, can do other niffty things, and is still one of the cheaper ones on the market. Remember, a BD Player is a high end computer. It might as well do more than one thing.

I think Blu-Ray is gonna run into a bit of trouble turnig DVDs into VHS-es. I'm not saying it won't happen, I'm just saying I sorta doubt it in the next two years.
For starters, this HD-TV upgrade. Sure, some will wanna upgrade their movie system to go with the TV, but a good bit are gonna be upset they're have to upgrade. I'm hearing it now from all types of people.
And until places like Blockbuster stat selling tons of Blu-Rays over DVDs, DVDs are gonna be around. They're still cheap as hell to throw together and mass produce, so they'll have the place.
But hey, if DVD prices drop, I'll stock up as I did on VHS tapes. (Although, I have upgraded most of my VHS collection to DVD. I've got less than 20 VHS tapes left. Some of which I'm not sure if I can upgrade. (That doesn't include my ginormous Wrestling Shelf which has like 90 tapes on it, the majority of which aren't on DVD and most probably won't ever be in my lifetime.)

The thing is though that you can still keep all your DVDs and play them on a blue ray player. I think that is a really good thing about blueray as opposed to what dvd was over vhs.

I got an HD-DVD player when Wal-Mart was having their secret sale and it was only $100. I only have Batman Begins but I thought about getting Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean's 13. I don't really regret having the player because I got it for cheap and now it will be a collectors item. I'm gonna stick to dvd for a while and eventually when I get Blu-Ray I'll just stick to buying new releases. There's no need to replace my other dvd's.
