As I said in a previous thread "Wait...wait...wait...hmm...nope, thought I gave a crap for a second" the only thing i could be arsed to do about this is come up with a Wal-Mart/Sony conspiracy to control the distribution of digital media Then I remembered I don't shop at Wal-Mart and don't give Sony my money so it doesn't matter. The actual conspiracy is MS funded HD-DVD through Toshiba to prevent Blu-Ray from consolidating the market by creating two competing formats and mis-information in the marketplace. When it became clear Blu-Ray would win, they kept funding Toshiba and HD-DVD to try and come out with their own method of digital distribution channel to skip the HD gen of home movies. Considering MS track record with quality, I think we should all be quite happy Blu-Ray won and MS isn't taking the forefront of digital downloads. That said, its nice you don't care, but you'll likely be the minority in the next 2-3 years. So the fact that Sony and other companies did the same damn thing with Blu-Ray, finally succeeding where the Sony-backed Mini-Discs and UMDs couldn't, isn't a conspiracy? The fact they put Blu-Ray into PS3s, which are now the cheapest way to get what will soon be the only format in town, isn't a conspiracy to continue their arrogant belief that they are the forefront of the video game "war"? Yeah sure, you keep telling yourself that. I personally will be continuing my vow to not give Sony my money for the way they treat their customers and the contempt they have for their client base. Foolish? Maybe, but at least I'm sticking to it. None of this lip-service for me, no way, no how. I at least remember the fact they put intrusive spyware on what they sold, then told us we didn't need to know what it was.

If you look at the list of supporters of each format is was basicalyl Toshiba and MS in HD-DVD and everyone else in Blu-Ray (including Apple, Samsung, etc.). Sony is at the forefront because they put the technology in their video game system, no dobut, but there's a lot more to it then them pushing a Blu-Ray player on consumers. Especially considering the 360 is having issues fitting entire games in their current DVD-formatted discs, it seems like a reasonable calculation by Sony. Sony is, no doubt, fiercly propreitary, but so is everyone else in the market. Unfortunately for Sony (though I guess that depends on your stance on the company), they've gambled on formats that have superior specs on paper, but were poorly exectued in reality. They actually have a number of backers in Blu-Ray, which is likely the major reason the format is successful now. No doubt a lot is due to the PS3, but there was more hands in shaping it and it was clearly superior to HD-DVD. You're free to hate whoever you want. I won't go out of my way to buy MS products because Windows is garbage, the 360s fail at a ridiculous rate and the Zunes are an awful piece off technology. That said, I won't avoid a media format because they use it, which is basically what you're arguing for in regards to Blu-Ray.

Quite simply I do not wish to support Blu-Ray, because that involves supporting Sony, and I will not support Sony because they have on a personal level betrayed the trust of me and some people I'm close to. They sought to win this generation's console war, and through Blu-Ray, they will succeed, and nothing will change for the better. I am well aware multiple companies support Blu-Ray, but Sony is the forefront, and for my belief, the face of this, because they touted the blu-ray as one of the major selling points of the PS3 And how is this not forcing a format on someone. Of course it is. Yes, the Blu-Ray has won, but Sony has won bigger. And that...well that just sucks. Now I have to put up with more arrogant Sony fanboyism not to mention the intense marketing campaign that will probably ensue attempting to get people to buy all the PS3s they wouldn't buy in the first place since the Blu-Ray will soon be the only format in town. I wasn't even a proponent of ANY HD media, for the simple fact that HD was going to be forced on us as well and I don't see the point in HD.

They have a reason to say "I told you so!" to all the bandwagon gamers that jumped ship to the 360 and Wii. Keep in mind, many of the bandwagon gamers were the same ones saying "Xbox sucks! I wasn't even a proponent of ANY HD media, for the simple fact that HD was going to be forced on us as well and I don't see the point in HD. You can go into a store, purchase a Samsung Blu-Ray player and take it home to play on your television set (no doubt it's not a Bravia) and play a Time Warner movie on it. Sony didn't see a penny in that example. Again, Blu-Ray isn't Sony, Sony isn't Blu-Ray. The Blu-Ray Disc Association is Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung, Sony, Apple, TDK, Dell, Hewlett Packard, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros., Universal Music Group and some 250 others. Regardless, there's no decree that states you have to throw out your VHS and DVD and adopt Blu-Ray. If you want to watch something in HD, you're basically forced to choose, but one format or the other was going to win, regardless. Again, everything's moving to HD based on consumers overall demand. Costs will go down as it becomes more widely adopted, but you're in the minority big time as far as wanting to watch things in better resolution in clarity. And, unless Sony sent their assassin squad to wipe out your entire family, you're pretty much guilty of the same "fanboyism" you state to hate so much. Everyone in the consumer electronics business has screwed the consumer over big time, it's just how much of it you make personal, I guess.

Oh look, an argument on the internet, over something as trivial as the 'format wars'. Hey, how about this...pick whichever you like, and go with that, and stop taking up page after page on the board...how does that sound? Good day!

Oh no, some die-hard fans have said the same things, there is no getting past that, but only a small chunk of the current Sony fan-base says those kinds of things. The ones that spout it everyday have now turned around(and depending on the new company they are backing) says either Sony & Microsoft sucks or Sony & Nintendo sucks, sometimes it is just Sony sucks. Also, I don't know what kind of idea you have about Sony fans now, but the true fans(like me) had to put up with a LOT of crap for liking Sony in 2006 and 2007. Now the remaining(from the current looks of it, less than 10 million out of the 100+ million PS2 owners) Sony fans(such as me and the rest of the people that post in the PS3 thread) actually have a viable defense against all the nay saying. There still are a few douche bag Sony fans(every fan base has douche bag fans), but overall the remaining fan base is friendly and respectful. I've yet to run into any problems with people over the PS3's online, yet over the Xbox Live there were people I willingly wanted to KILL. The true to life douche bag gamers always flock to whichever system is the most popular one in America, and right now that is the 360 and thus Microsoft has gained the douche bag army that Sony once had. I don't understand where this truly blind hate for Sony you harbor comes from but please remember things are different now. Sony's been put into their place. 2006 and 2007 were a huge dose of reality to Sony and now they(for the most part) watch what they say during press conferences and interviews(they, for the most part, are no longer spouting nonsensical babble that can be used as ammo against them). So unless Sony personally killed your mother and father and raped the rest of your family, your hate stems from nothing but the bandwagon douche bag gamers that Sony amassed during the reign of the PS2, and if that's the case, those people are long gone. They have attached themselves to the collective dicks of Microsoft's executives.

I really don't see Pilot's hate for Sony as a company itself. From his responses it seems clear that all he really hates is the fans that gave Sony a negative image when they were on the top of the gaming world. And all I've stated is that those people are long gone...until Sony comes back to the top that is. So far everything has been civil actually. Trust me in my days of fighting in the digital trenches of the previous generation's console war I've seen and even participated in things much more out of hand that quickly degenerated into a frenzy of all caps and sentences ending in "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!" How the course of this thread goes is really all up to Pilot now.

It's just funny to me how the thread has, in essance, turned into a console arguement. Well the HD disc format war was a highly fought side battle of this generation's console war. The 360 kind-of sort-of backed the HD-DVD format(similar to the Nazis backing the Italians) but the PS3 supported Blu-Ray day one. If it wasn't for the fact that Sony made Blu-Ray the PS3's disc format, the format war would've been something really NO ONE would've cared for, but Sony in essence brought the format war to the console war. Now while the winner of the format war certainly won't decide the winner of the console war, Blu-Ray winning has given Sony and the PS3 some momentum. Hell the only reason I think Microsoft backed HD-DVD was so Sony wouldn't be the only one supporting a new disc format in the console war. Of course Microsoft, being the trend followers that they are, are already planning a Blu-Ray player attachment for the 360 as we speak. They are cutting their losses and kicking HD-DVD to the side ever so slowly. If Microsoft made HD-DVD the format their games would be placed on, however, then they would be stuck with it for the entire console generation.

Make sure when you down it to cover it gasoline and light it on fire. Cremate the body before it can revive as a Crimson Disc! Oh man! I hate those! They are pains in my ass! Especially their razor sharp claws and the ability to further mutate into a Flicker. Hey....I just noticed something. This thread has been hijacked twice. First time was turning to the inevitable focus of the console war, second time was us making Resident Evil references to the now dead HD-DVD. Oh God....I just thought of something AMAZING. What if, on Resident Evil 5, Capcom adds an unlockable side game where you play as Blu-Ray and you have to take out HD-DVD zombies? Like The Tofu Survivor from RE2 but on crack!

What's this mean, if anything, for the 360? Nothing really. As I already mentioned, MS is already planning a Blu-Ray player add-on for the 360. Also as I've already mentioned, since the HD-DVD format was a side format playable on the 360 via an add-on player and not the native disc format for the games on the system, Microsoft can simply cast the format aside. Toshiba may have been supported by Microsoft, but in the end Microsoft was just using them to have a HD disc format to combat the Sony-supported Blu-Ray.
