Warning review will have spoilers
Before I go into anything I would say that this was the best comic book movie of all time. It had moments of pure brilliance, the scenes on mars with Dr. Manhattan and Silk Specter were enthralling. In general the preformances of Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan and Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach were amazing. The film really did stay faithful to the comic to great detail, really a great job here. Also the time period feels just about right, there would be no way to do this story with any less time and there was no way you could of released a movie that was longer then 2 and a half hours long.
That being said there were 3 problems with the film, the biggest is the fight scenes. Everyone except for the last one, had that cheesy slow motion and a odd focus on the most brutal acts of violence. It almost felt like they needed to keep the audience's attention with the acts of violence, sort of underestimating the intelligence of the audience (or hell maybe they are right, but regardless it took away from the movie)
Second the ending, this is not because there was no squid, I had come to terms before seeing the movie that they couldn't put that in the film. It was really the execution of it, with Ozymandias's new plan blaming it on Dr.Manhattan instead of an alien race, it does not seem logical that because of this the USSR would ally with America automatically. Would the USSR, knowing that Manhattan was from America think it was an American attack of some sort? Even though he was out of the picture in everyone elses eyes, wouldn't the Russians think it would be some sort of trick? Also (and this is really more of a nit picking point) I hated how Ozymandias knew when he turned on the TV that the world would just unite, it was so much more powerful in the comic when he sees it on the TV and screams "I did it!". Then they took out the last interaction between Manhattan and Ozymandias that was really special, and replaced it with Nite Owl beating the shit out of him.
Last is really a minor point but for me an important one. In Rorschach's back story, when he finds the little girls killer. At the end he kills the man with a butchers cleaver. This quite frankly really disappointed me, originally Rorschach killed the man by lighting a fire and walking away while the man screamed for mercy. That sort of scene would better explain the sort of emotional detachment you see though out the rest of his life, the killing with the cleaver felt like another instance of trying to add blood and gore to the movie, in which it did not need any.
Despite its flaws, its an amazing movie and I'd recommend it to anyone

Anyone check out the companion book? There is a picture of Captain Axis and some other 40s bad guys. It also shows someone dressed up as Hitler. Wonder if stuff with them is in the director's cut.

Just saw it tonight.
Great. Just damn great.
Visually amazing. It better at least be nominated for some tech oscars.
The story was actually surprisingly faithful. And I actually dug the ending.
The only thing that irked me was they took out my favorite Rorschach scene(the one where he goes into the bar and breaks that guy's pinky). Hopefully it was just cut from the movie in post, and shows up as a deleted scene.
Can't wait to get this on Blu-Ray when it finally drops. I'll need to get an HDTV so I can truly its beauty.

I'd like to see Jackie Earle Haley and/or Jeffrey Dean Morgan get nominated for best supporting actor. I wouldn't be totally shocked either since Downey Jr. got one for Tropic Thunder this year.

yeah, I was actually thinking the same. There are a few people I wouldn't mind seeing getting at least a supporting nod. But that might be a problem, also. If there was just 1 great performance, then it'd be easy. But there were 3, arguably 4 great performances(Rorschach, Nite Owl II, Comedian, and i thought Dr Manhattan as well. Not sure what the consensus is on Doc, though), and no way they'd all get nominated, so they might all get snubbed.

Saw it yesterday, loved it, but it was a lot to digest. It didn't feel like near 3 hours but when I see it again, I know it'll wear on me a little.
But honestly, I loved Ozymandias the best out of everyone and that shocked the Hell out of me. I'd think that my fave would've gone to Rorschach or Comedian.

Problem solved: - Make Rorschach a Best Lead Actor nom(hey, he TECHNICALLY is the lead character) - Then give any combination of Nite Owl II, Doc, and Comedian Best Supporting noms(hey, the Academy has allowed films to have multiple noms in the same category before).

No performances will be nominated unless Jackie Earle Haley dies sometime between now and Oscar time, sadly.

Dude, I mean this with no offense at all, but THIS is why people have so many confrontations with you. I personally can get over it (unlike some of the people that argue with you), but you are taking this thinly vield shot at Heath Ledger in a thread that has nothing to do with him and then wonder why so many people get upset and defend him.

Yeah, those guys have problem being nominated for the next Oscars, and I don't mean the fact that they starred in a comic book movie. What I mean is it's going to be almost a year for the next Oscars. Most Oscar nominated movies come out near the end of the year. In between now and then, "Watchmen" could easily get forgotten.
