Just a quick question..
So nowadays Cena is the top face right? About half the time on RAW he gets huge pops, but sometimes the crowd will be kind of 60% for him and 40% against him, and at most PPV's the crowd seem to boo him out of the building. Like at Summerslam agaisnt Orton, very audible boos were heared when Face Cena got in some offense, and very audible cheers were heard for Heel Orton. And this is a recurring thing.
How come this didnt happen to Austin and Rock (Rock against Hogan at Wresltemania aside). What I mean is that even by the time the two men were stale in 2002, they still got huge pops, and 95% of the crowd was always on their sides. Is it the kiddy promos from Cena?

People remember how entertaining they used to be, or simply hold the Attitude era in such regard that they get 'nostalgia' pops.
Rock and Austin also occassionally lost face, Cena tends to be booked to look strong and dominant at nearly every opportunity, which annoys people.

They did, to a much more limited extent. The difference is people never got bored with Austin/Rocky's mic work-even late in their runs they were still keeping it fresh (via their respective heel turns). If Cena did a heel turn, most of the heat would evaporate, but WWE is dead-set on making him their version of 80s Sting.

I didnt mean nowadays when they rarely return, I meant at the time. Like when Austin was dominant in 98/99, or Rock was dominant through the early 2000s.

I agree with this word for word...but I WILL say this...we all know what happened with Sting late '96/early '97...

They did. His last face run before he went Hollywood, The Rock hate was absolutely ridiculous. It didn't make any sense at all, and was wayyyyy worse than the Cena hate. MUCH worse.

I think a big part of it is Cena's pandering character and the popular perception that Cena "can't wrestle" (you'd be surprised how many people believe this).
Austin and the Rock didn't really have that problem as much.
And their used to be alot of hatred for the Rock online, but on a smaller scale than what Cena gets now.

I like John Cena. However, i can see how he can come off as "shoved down the fans throat" more so than Austin and Rock. He does not have near the charisma and ability to get the crowd into a promo or match like they did. They had far better gimmicks as well. I loved Austin and Rock from the start. I kind of had to warm up to Cena.

How was the Austin hate? Im just curious as I was a young teenage mark of these guys, and I just wanted them to win all the time

They still had detractors, but it had more to do with Austin and Rock's movesets not being as fancy as their contemporaries rather than alleged repetition or appearing too mild, which is what Cena gets. Not that I agree, though.

For the record, I think Cena is pretty good. But it makes me almost uncomfortable to hear the 'good guy' get booed.

I think Austin is more universally respected.

because they were new and exciting characters and when they made their face turns they didn't completely strip them of everything that people started cheering the heel character for.

When guys like Jericho, Angle, the Dudleyz and the Radicalz came to WWF, they influenced the wrestling style, and much of the online complaints I read aimed at Rock had to do with people thinking he couldn't "keep up". People also had issues with him winning handicap matches, I think.

The catch phrases and his whole persona pretty much. Its silly because he was one of, if not THE most over wrestler in WWE history because of it, but because some people on the internet thought it was annoying it "sucked".
