This really has me baffled too! His comedy isn't for everyone, but in no way would I ever consider him even remotely incomprehensible.... Must be us Yanks then. My wife is American and she understands him perfectly.

I think he's funny, but his movies usually stink. That ghost movie was terrible.

I also know never to call my wife a "Yank". She doesn't take too kindly to that and I'm quite fond of my genitals staying where they're meant to be. Yet her name here has "Redneck" in it.

His stand up shows have got progressively worse.
He made a film with Stephen Merchant called "Cemetery Junction" last year which got great reviews, but SUCKED in my opinion. It was very formulaic and unfunny. I'm a big fan of his TV shows, but his films have been very weak.

Frankie Boyle would bankrupt any channel that aired him censored at an award show. The lawsuits!

For starters if it isn't okay to make fun out of the bad/odd life choices made by actors and actresses with egos the size of Brazil then I'm not sure what it is okay to make fun of?
I'm 50/50 on Gervais, loved Extras, thought The Office was okay, I work in an office and found some of the characters so close to home it just made me cringe really.
Haven't really liked any of his movies, mostly just thought they were okay.
However, I am forever grateful to him and Steve Merchant for bringing Karl Pilkington into the public eye, The Ricky Gervais Show and An Idiot Abroad are utterly brilliant.
I 5th(?) the request for Frankie Boyle to be sent Stateside.

I can't tell if Carell was legit pissed at 7:50 They have a running gag where Carell acts pissed off at Awards shows when Gervais goes on about how Carell owes his success to him. It's been going on for a few years now.

Haha! Well, obviously you guys have a better grasp on English than us ...erm... English... Hehe It's not having a better grasp, it's having a completely different dialect. You guys might understand each other just fine, but to a lot of people from the US, you sound like you're mumbling half the time even if you're saying words we understand. (Not YOU, I just meant people with accents like Gervais.) And it's mainly The Office when I can't understand him. "So I sometimes Mumble Mumble and then we Mumble Mumble....can you believe Mumble Mumble?" Hahahaha Hiiiiilarious.

Well, if you believe the Hollywood rumor mill, hope Gervais had fun last night because people are SERIOUSLY upset. Buzz is he's basically been black balled from ever hosting an award show again and anything he does do on television won't ever be considered for awards or nominations.
I know, not a big deal to him, I'm sure, but just what's out there.

That seems extremely drastic, considering all he did was make jokes that most people have already made (he just had the balls to do it to their faces). If anything, Awards ceremonies would be foaming at the mouth to have him host, considering all the buzz and controversy he generated.

I liked the last stand up special he did on HBO and think he's a pretty damn good actor in general. Not a die-hard fan, but he's good.
I'm having a hard time deciding if I'm down for the setting and whatnot for the jokes he did. I just don't watch awards show much as it is, so I guess that part of it doesn't phase me, but despite having NO problems laughing at incredibly offensive things (I have very few taboos in humor), I'm not big on going for shock value. "Shock" comedy usually bores me, and while he seemed to attempt to make it serve a purpose here (to throw celebrity culture back in celebrities' faces), I'd have just been bored if I had seen it all.

The only jokes he did that were over the line imo were the joke about the old guy putting in his teeth (not offensive but why?) and the Robert Downey, Jr line (he's gotten clean and turned his life around, pick a target that's still out there)

Saying his already won multiple Emmy's and a Golden Globes for The Office and Extra's this whole "being band" thing reminds me of the story of The Doors on Ed Sullivan. The long and short of it was that Ed wanted them to change the lyrics to Let My Fire and at the time The Doors had signed a multi-show contract with the Sullivan show. So they go out, do the song as written and after the show Sullivan is pissed. He tells them that they just ruined their chance to be on the Ed Sullivan Show and Morrison says to him "Hey man we just did the Ed Sullivan show" meaning that once it's over it's pointless to do anything about it.

I find most of the celebs that are dumped on are REALLY easy targets and the real prick never get picked on Yea, people rip on Paris and Snooki for having a good time, but noone rips on some guy that's a complete prick and goes over the line. they just sit and applaud. seriously? defending paris hilton? dont have to wait till 2012, the apocalypse has already arrived. ....... seriously? what???
