This what I think of when a comedians performance is scrutinized:

so what celebs "needed to be taken down a notch''? I find most of the celebs that are dumped on are REALLY easy targets and the real prick never get picked on Yea, people rip on Paris and Snooki for having a good time, but noone rips on some guy that's a complete prick and goes over the line. they just sit and applaud. seriously? defending paris hilton? dont have to wait till 2012, the apocalypse has already arrived. ....... seriously? what??? As little use as I have for Paris Hilton or various other pseudo-celebrities, why should I rip on them, really? She's rich and ridiculous, but what she does has absolutely no impact on me, and as much as I don't really want to hear anything about her, I'd blame the sycophantic news media that drools over anything anyone rich or famous does and reports it within minutes of discussing actual important world events. What Hilton, Kardashian, or any of those other people do in their own time is none of my business.

Hollywood is just like wrestling guys.
Its all about publicity.
I bet Paris Hilton, Robert Downey Jr and Ricky Gervais were backstage sharing a glass of bubbly during the afterparty.

I love how in the video preview he's doing that finger gesture. Glad to see his act apparantly hasn't changed from 2002!
The "world's funniest comedian" according to some people, ladies and gents!

He either makes you laugh or he doesn't. I don't get these venomous posts against comedians...cause, well, you either laughed or you didn't. You can't tell somebody they didn't laugh or force them to. It's pointless.

The only jokes he did that were over the line imo were the joke about the old guy putting in his teeth (not offensive but why?) and the Robert Downey, Jr line (he's gotten clean and turned his life around, pick a target that's still out there) Both those jokes did rub me the wrong way, but not because they were over the line. They just weren't funny. Downey's problems were a punchline a decade ago. Overall nothing very noteworthy about his routine, IMHO. I don't know why everyone gasped at the Tom Cruise crack - even that joke is old. The best things he did were the list of Bruce Willis's other movies, the Tom Hanks/Tim Allen bit, and the list of Robert Downey Jr's movies sounding like porn titles.

Finally caught the opening monologue from last night that I sadly missed. Why are people going on about how incredible he was? It was the same jokes everyone has been making for the past generation. Tom Cruise is gay! *laughter* Cher is old! *laughter* Hugh Hefner is also old! *laughter* Did you know Mel Gibson is an anti semite?! *laughter* ...Kim Catrall is old! *laughter* I'm having a hard time deciding if I'm down for the setting and whatnot for the jokes he did. I just don't watch awards show much as it is, so I guess that part of it doesn't phase me, but despite having NO problems laughing at incredibly offensive things (I have very few taboos in humor), I'm not big on going for shock value. "Shock" comedy usually bores me, and while he seemed to attempt to make it serve a purpose here (to throw celebrity culture back in celebrities' faces), I'd have just been bored if I had seen it all. For the above posters and others ragging on the specific content of his jokes, what kind of material would you have covered? I don't mean give me actual jokes because you're not comedians and it's not your job but just ideas for subjects. What is relevant and what should be talked about? If it's stuff that's old, what material do you want him discussing that would feel fresh?

Gervais just strikes me as a jerk-ass. It's like Frankie Boyle, mean comedy for the sake of being mean. Especially as Gervais: a) Promised to behave, then flipped the script. b) Got told off, and came back chagrined. If you're going to be a 'peoples representative' comic, at least have the stones to be upfront about it, and not let anyone tell you how to tell jokes. That's what made Carlin so good, he told his jokes his way without shame.

i never recall Ricky saying he would behave, infact all of his talk show appearances he had leading up to the event he was saying that they are letting him say whatever he wants. and they were even promoting the event as Ricky Gervais uncensored...shouldnt have been a surprise as every media outlet was promoting the event as such.
also for the people that dont understand him...i dont get it, i understand him perfectly and im from chicago...of corse i can also understand Liam Gallagher perfectly when he speaks so maybe im just used to the british voice...

I loved the Office and Extras. But never been a massive fan of Gervais and his stand up and podcasts.
BUT his presenting of the Golden Globes was AMAZING. I didn't think any of what he said was malicious or mean spirited it was just what we would call in the UK "Banter."
I enjoyed seeing people like Alec Baldwin absolutely pissing themselves laughing too.

I can't believe more people aren't on Gervais' side here. He was talking about CELEBRITIES, for goodness sakes. These people are (as the Extras clip mentioned) too lazy to get real jobs, or put forth any real effort into anything, all for the payment of having their lives out on display to the public.
Gervais wasn't saying anything that hasn't already been in the tabloids a million times over, I don't get the moral outrage over some harmless comedy to rattle some of these CELEBRITIES' cages. A lot of these people take themselves way too seriously at these award shows, as if somehow the "work" (it pains me to even call it that) they do is at all hard, virtuous, meritorious, or worthy of praise. It's not, and really the only people that were getting the treatment from Gervais either deserved it due to their past indiscretions, or were CLEARLY being had fun with in a harmless manner (ala the Office jokes with Carrell, and the Sex in the City jokes).
People are far too hyper-sensitive in the United States, if this is something that causes controversy.

Wow, that's some terrible stereotyping of real human beings right there. Lovely.
As for what I'd want the material to be, I have no idea: I hate awards shows.

I hate award show hosts.
Why do we need some dope comedian who is too hip for the room and some lame-assed dance number?
Just announce the awards and get the f*** off stage.

If it's stuff that's old, what material do you want him discussing that would feel fresh? How about plotlines of the actual movies? Mocking the celebrities for their performances in non award worthy ventures coming out at the same time. Pretty sure he could have done something with Natalie Portman being a ballerina and a doctor who just wants to have mindless sex with Ashton Kutcher. -Geoffrey Rush's work in Warrior's Way. Or hell, just play that clip of Portman's teacher telling her to m********* How about mocking the autotuned to hell TV powerhouse known as Glee? Its filled with nothing but assholes. Also its considered a family show despite having teen pregnancy, backstabbing, and pretty much sexual assault. Wishing he hadn't spent so much money producing the myspace movie, an NBC movie of the week this march. Inception jokes. Rip off south park like they ripped off college humor. Mocking Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, and Geoffrey Rush for their award nominated portrayals of English people. Likewise Amy Adams and other Woman for playing white trash in the fighter. Say Christian Bale researched his role as a meth addict by consulting with our next presenter- Helen Mirren. Making fun of the other movies nominated in best animated. Mentioning how all the best picture drama nominees combined made less than Harry Potter 7.1. Mocking the best picture comedy/musical nominees. Burlesque, are you frikking kidding me? Most importantly, bringing up how no one gives a crap about the Golden Globes. and so on

^All that, and the GG got the best ratings they've gotten in decades.
It's hard to fathom how some of you people on THIS website out of any other fail to realize that Gervais was playing a comic heel. And succeeding brilliantly, I might add.
@uncle HMark-roh, if you had a problem with my "stereotyping of real human beings," perhaps you've missed the blatant irony of elitists (who make $200,000-per-episode or millions per movie) getting the weepies because of one comedian roasting them on public television for all of 5 seconds. In any case, celebrities don't have any right to be treated as "real human beings" whatever gave you that mistaken impression, dear boy??

I agree that he was playing a heel, but he was playing a severely outdated heel with terrible timing. If it were prowrestling, he would have been singing the Soviet Anthem on key.

I thought it was great how he roasted all of those uptight celebrities. Aside from his comedy club appearance in "Grand Theft Auto 4" I've never seen any of Ricky's work but it seems like he was a great host.

Haven't seen much of his stand up but I do enjoy his work (Loved the UK office although it wasn't terribly funny, and I liked the Invention of Lying) from time to time. The Golden Globes was like a very tame roast of a small group of Hollywood not impressed but at least the guy did what he thought was funny.
