I can't believe more people aren't on Gervais' side here. He was talking about CELEBRITIES, for goodness sakes. These people are (as the Extras clip mentioned) too lazy to get real jobs, or put forth any real effort into anything, all for the payment of having their lives out on display to the public. Gervais wasn't saying anything that hasn't already been in the tabloids a million times over, I don't get the moral outrage over some harmless comedy to rattle some of these CELEBRITIES' cages. A lot of these people take themselves way too seriously at these award shows, as if somehow the "work" (it pains me to even call it that) they do is at all hard, virtuous, meritorious, or worthy of praise. It's not, and really the only people that were getting the treatment from Gervais either deserved it due to their past indiscretions, or were CLEARLY being had fun with in a harmless manner (ala the Office jokes with Carrell, and the Sex in the City jokes). People are far too hyper-sensitive in the United States, if this is something that causes controversy. All of that would make more sense, it really really would, if Ricky Gervais isn't already on their level himself. He IS a mega star. Some of us don't understand it, but he created two highly regarded shows (one actually having a successful US version), a long stand up career and a solid movie career. In other words, he makes a feck tonne of money. So him slagging off Celebrities about being Celebrities would be like if Vince McMahon started to slag off corporate heads for being corporate heads. You are one, you are a successful one, don't suddenly try and be 'cool' and 'rebellious' and pretend you're not one. Edit: Your statement would ring more true if he was hosting, say, the E! Awards or something or anything involving shows like Jersey Shore or whatever. Acting is a job as much as any other, people just hype it up more. Not the fault of the people DOING the job. And whilst I'm add it, a guy who goes onto charity shows with the main gag being 'Hey, I'm here to promote my DVD of my stupid show and I don't care about the charity BECAUSE I AM AWESOME AND YOU'RE ALL DUMB!' should not be talking crap about anyone.

I finally saw it on YouTube's front page, and thought the dude was hilarious and spot on with his jokes. I think some media folk need to remember that key word, "jokes".

I love Gervais. He's honestly the only reason I watched the awards on Sunday and if he hosted more shows, I would actually watch those too. The main thing is he's JOKING. Thicker skin would do the world a lot of good.

^All that, and the GG got the best ratings they've gotten in decades. It's hard to fathom how some of you people on THIS website out of any other fail to realize that Gervais was playing a comic heel. And succeeding brilliantly, I might add. @uncle HMark-roh, if you had a problem with my "stereotyping of real human beings," perhaps you've missed the blatant irony of elitists (who make $200,000-per-episode or millions per movie) getting the weepies because of one comedian roasting them on public television for all of 5 seconds. In any case, celebrities don't have any right to be treated as "real human beings" whatever gave you that mistaken impression, dear boy?? So anyone who makes six figures is a stuck up, uptight egotist who's deserving of scorn for the job they do, regardless of whether or not that job has a negative impact on anyone at all. Really man, that's a childish way to view things. Should I look that way at all the celebrities who lent their talents to shows like Extras, too, a show where they have to be in on the joke of it all at their expense? Get real. They're real people, they earn great money for doing a specialized skill, and if you really hate that take it up with the studio heads who pay them. As for the jokes, I don't particularly care; like I said, there's next to nothing I find offensive when it comes to humor. I just don't see the need at awards shows to do anything but give out the damn awards. Those awful shows are too long as it is.

British comedian talks in a sarcastic and abrasive manner. Film at eleven. (Not a huge fan of Gervais, but some of the jokes there were pretty good. His best thing has to be the Extras Christmas special, though, which the whole rant on celebrity culture in general.) The Office (UK) while a great show of acting, is not a particularly amazing comedy show. And Ive never watched Extras in my life, but I just searched for this clip, and it's one of the best pieces of television I have EVER seen. I mean, one of the best. Everyone should watch this. He isnt half as funny as he thinks, but goddamn, his delivery as a serious actor here is great. I loved Extras from start to finish, but this scene sealed it for me. I honestly can't remember being more engaged by a scene of television.

The reason they gasped is becuase while the joke is old, who has ever had the guts to tell it to a room full of Tom's peers? Id say it had neve been done. Is that guts though? Gervais just strikes me as a jerk-ass. It's like Frankie Boyle, mean comedy for the sake of being mean. Especially as Gervais: a) Promised to behave, then flipped the script. b) Got told off, and came back chagrined. If you're going to be a 'peoples representative' comic, at least have the stones to be upfront about it, and not let anyone tell you how to tell jokes. That's what made Carlin so good, he told his jokes his way without shame. I would say it is. Hollywood ceebrities are some of the most pretantious, stuck up people out there. So, to make jokes about them or their collegues right to their faces knowing they won't take kindly to it does take guts.

I agree that he was playing a heel, but he was playing a severely outdated heel with terrible timing. If it were prowrestling, he would have been singing the Soviet Anthem on key. Good Heels give their opponents a chance to retort. Gervais was the equivalent of HHH burying his competition. It's not like was trying to make the evening entertaining via witty banter - he basically broke kayfabe. I mean, when you get RDJ upset... the guy is a born. improviser.
